I don't think Lestat lies very much, in my recollection; he witholds information and only tells what he wants you to know when he wants you to know it. He definitely has an issue with transparency, but he doesn't make up stories. You can mostly trust that what he says is true.

The toxicity, the hidden vulnerabilities, the miscommunications, the indulgences, the things they admire in each and the devastating love and adoration is what make people root for this couple - especially for those of us who read all 13 books, ending in 2018. Despite the unreliable narration, there was such an earnest intention to love and revel in each other. This show is capturing all of that for me.

I’m so glad to see another fan who enjoys this series. I do hope to one day see a word for word adaptation of Queen of The Damned just cause I love the 80’s and hair metal and the aesthetic of the scenes in the 80’s, but I am absolutely enthralled by this take on the books. I love the feeling watching this show gives me, because I genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen next, just like when I read the books for the first time. I have a vague idea based on what happens there, but it is such a thrill to try and figure it out. Also Jacob Anderson is so compelling as Louis. And the acting is top tier.
@czest-d7f2 жыл бұрын
@@jackceltic4947 Absolutely. I don't know why some people are so upset with the adapted contexts. They only enhance the story. I don't actually need a word for word re-telling of these stories. The soul is there - and it's BRIGHT. I love that I recognize the story I fell into 20 yrs ago - and that I somehow have no clue what is about to happen. And that's how it should be a for a tv adaptation. I don't know if I'd be as captivated if it was exactly as it is in the books. It should make me question my own memory, I should enjoy the easter eggs and the clues, I should be thrown off my game, I should be looking forward to what will be revealed each week, each season. And I am all of those things. How many of us, those with deep love for a world, can ever say that we're re-living the feeling of falling in love all over again? Not many. I can legitimately say that I don't have a clue how they'll weave all of these stories and characters together. That's exciting. But I also know that these characters are 100% the ones I know and love - and maybe even more than before.

I like the Sam Reid Lestat much better than the Tom Cruise Lestat in no small part because this one has a French accent.
@AnxietyRat2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's interesting how much an accent can improve your immersion into the story. Especially an accent that is decently & consistently put on. Sam is doing a great job with Lestat's French accent, IMO. And I agree I like Sam's Lestat a little bit more than Tom Cruise's BECAUSE of the accent. 100%.
@moonlily12 жыл бұрын
@@AnxietyRat Yes, it does take you out of the story, because you have to ask, how long has Lestat been in America, and when did he lose his accent? French accents tend to be really strong, they don't just fall away easily. Plus, he never speaks French or reference French stuff that often, so the original was really not trying to sell that he was French, did not illustrate any cultural issues between Lestat and Louis as French American and an actual Frenchman. It also didn't explain much about the reason for Lestat's interest in Louis and why he chose him as a companion, if you take romantic infatuation/sexual attraction out of the equation, why you would want to hang out with this guy for eternity. Also, the series gives both characters more personality and depth. Brad Pitt's Louis was just somber and broody all of the time, whereas Cruise's Lestat was just a preening, peacocking asshole all the time. Each character had exactly one personality trait that they played to the hilt from start to finish, whereas these portrayals are multifaceted. Lestat is still an asshole but that's not all he is, Louis does more than just mope, and he loves Lestat, he isn't just stuck with him. The resentment he feels towards his is gradual, whereas in the film (and somewhat in the book, to be honest) it is immediate. Though that can be blamed on Louis' subjectivity, editing the story in bitterness to say he never really liked the guy.
@AnxietyRat2 жыл бұрын
@@moonlily1 yeah, accents can fade over time. But they can also be lifelong. I had a few British relatives that moved to where I live, which is not England, and they kept their accent ...granted they moved when they were like in their 30s or 40s so they spent a decent chunk of their life surrounded by people with the same accent as them. But yeah, they didn't really lose it when they moved and they still had those accents when they passed away in their 80's. But it's also super common for your accent to fade a little bit when you're away from people who don't sound like you. But yeah, I watched the movie recently and they DO have Lestat say a few French phrases but because he has an American accent it's really kind of out of place and sounds weird that they just have him tossing around some French words for no reason with zero hint of a French accent. In the show its much more natural sounding. I agree, the characters have much more depth. The writers have talked about why that is...its is partly because the movie was solely adopting Interview With the Vampire. Whereas the show is taking snippets and personality traits from the ENTIRE Vampire Chronicles series and interweaving them in the characters now. I think that's why they seem to have a lot more depth. Cuz yeah, in the book, Louis was just bitter and angry and brooding. And Lestat was dramatic and childish and intense/cruel. Both of them kinda one note... Both of their characters get expanded upon in later books. People's perspective on Lestat kind of changes dramatically from 'Interview with the Vampire' where it's in Louis' perspective and 'The Vampire Lestat' which is from Lestats perspective and Anne wrote it almost a decade later so she had been thinking about Lestat and what kind of person he was for about a decade.
@moonlily12 жыл бұрын
@@AnxietyRat I actually didn't like Lestat much better after getting his side of the story. He wasn't the one dimensional baddie Louis made him out to be, but he definitely IS an arrogant and selfish creature. As much as Rice loved him, I never quite took to him. My personal feeling as the reader is that both characters have their biases. I don't think Louis lied about Lestat but interpreted his motivations incorrectly, but Lestat bares the blame for that misunderstanding because he chose to be evasive, manipulative and cryptic. Louis just painted him as a sociopath when really he's just more of a narcissist. That being said, there are some people who just pick up accents really quickly and we could just say that Lestat is one such person, or perhaps speculate that he consciously adapted an American accent in order to fit in better and draw less attention to himself. However, it is more immersive to the story to have the character's nationality as a distinct part of his identity that you as the viewer notice, that his background is not incidental to the person he is now. Cruise may have been incapable of doing a French accent, or he might just not have wanted to be bothered, or wasn't asked to be bothered. I have more respect for the fact that in this production, people did the work to make the characters authentic and fully realized.

I mean, a toxic relationship wouldn't be a toxic _relationship_ if there wasn't something getting you to come back. With Lestat, life can be hell. But when it is good, it is heavenly. Up until the end, it is clear that a part of Louis still loves him, will always love him, even though he _knows_ Lestat will make him miserable. And in his way, i think Lestat loves him too. In the only way that he knows how, materialistic, possessive and controlling, but it is all he can give louis and he _does_ gove him all when he is agreeable-

I've read all 13 books over and over again over the last 20 yrs. And I love this show just as much as the books. All the changes enhance the tone, motivations and themes in the books. It's a definite success for me. It's exactly what I wanted and needed a tv adaptation to be. I'm so excited to see how they weave all the other elements, characters and storylines together. It's gonna be a blast.
@RockChick63174 Жыл бұрын
People need to learn to separate the two forms. You could never include everything in a book and most novels are written in one perspective. That's why film can expand the world and the scenarios. New fans learn more before the reader and that's what makes it essential and exciting for both viewerships. The creators hope to bring new readers to the saga as well. For book fans, many say we wish for something exactly like the book, when an exact replica would be boring in reality. Where's the discovery and surprise?
