Join Baz and Albert (our resident gay Mexican reactors) as we dive into the incredibly sexy and goth laden world of Anne Rice. We are starting with a reaction to season 1 (with season 2 close to being released as the dropping of this reaction episode). While Baz has seen the first season, Albert has not.

I agree with everybody that Sam Reid was great in this series but Jacob Anderson? Jacob Anderson was a revelation. An extraordinary performance. He completely embodies whatever emotion Louis is feeling, it radiates off him. Making Daniel older and making this a second interview initially seemed, to me, like a alright gimmick for starting the series but I very quickly came to think it's a brilliant change. Daniel in the book is young and vampires are totally new information. He's in awe of and afraid of Louis and understandably so. This Daniel has lived with knowledge of the existence of vampires for decades and he is old enough and unwell enough to have faced his mortality and, seemingly, come to terms with it. So he doesn't fear Louis (as much) anymore and he isn't in awe of Louis. That makes him a much better interviewer and a much more interesting character for me.

I completely agree! My only question about this change is mainly from Queen of the Damned when Armand turned him, and because Anne Rice said you can’t change her vampires back he hasn’t been changed when he was younger so I’m wondering if they will ever make him a vampire

@@seanjames1600 In the novel, armand never wanted to change him as he had a moral code and just wanted Daniel to grow old with him, but because daniel was dying he changed him, and in the show Daniel is also dying so I think I agree with you and Armand might change Daniel against his will into a vampire because Daniel said he just wants to die. Also, I think because of the theory that he took his memory he probably did beg stmsnf to turn him but now they might switch it and armand wants to turn him and daniel wont (sorry this is a lot)

@@Simone-yv3ro Well, we know he asked to be turned at the time in this version, as Louis says he would do it now, and Daniel says he's no longer interested.

Louis lives in Dubai because the UAE has the strictest privacy laws on planet Earth. Perfect place for debaucherous celebrities, indicted oligarchs, and ageless vampires with money to burn, to maintain anonymity. Loved spending time with you guys. One request: At the end, please let Albert talk more. He's the one who's never seen the series, so his fresh eyes will be a nice companion to Baz's unique insights.

There's a lot of gay subtext in the movie, and Tom Cruise really embraced that. He had to explain it to one of the actors who was playing a victim. I wouldn't assume things about either Cruise or Pitt, necessarily, in this regard. It's fairly well known that Pitt tried to get out of the movie and was unhappy with being in it (which actually seemed to help with his portrayal, ironically).

Daniel doesn’t actually die at the end of Queen of the Damned, later in the series (spoilers) him and Armand reunite after Daniel had been staying with Marius and they get back together, and that is where their story ends.

Was lovely to watch you both get blown away from the pilot! One of the best I’ve ever seen! There’s so much to look forward to. Season 2 is already in production, and a lot of The Vampire Lestat is being incorporated which will lead to season 3. Can’t wait to see how you feel about the rest of the season!

To be fair, the FIRST novel in the Chronicles was also still very subtext-y and Rice also wrote the script for the movie. It's all there just very unspoken and in-universe that is of course explained by the different perspectives because it was book-Louis telling it. The movie did everything right in that regard. People sometimes forget, that things didn't get explicitly gay until the second novel when Lestat narrated. And she LOVED Tom Cruise after she actually watched the movie. I love both versions.

And Cruise had no problem with the gay. Listening to interviews with him about Lestat is so interesting (as is listening to Sam Reid's, of course).

Thanks for the great reaction. Best one of this series. Glad you bring up Anne's vision for this series. A lot of people think that she had nothing to do with the casting or the script to this show. But it is known that she had the outline of what she wanted to do with this series. She shopped it around. Even pulled out of a deal with Paramount, because they wanted to alter it. Found AMC and they made the show she wanted to make. Again this is her vision all the way. And the times now gave her the opportunity to do it right.

Yes, she wanted it to start with _The Vampire Lestat_ and take things chronologically, which is interesting.

I thought Christopher Rice was no longer associated with the show (except for the executive producer credit)? The showrunner is Rolin Jones, who has performed that function from the start.

I've never read the books, I have only watched the 1994 movie. But I just got done watching the Blu-ray of season 1 binged all of it, and it was AMAZING I loved every second of it. I'm officially hooked and can't wait for season 2 so very excited. I just hope word of mouth, the great reviews, and AMC get behind this show and promote it more, because it just seems like this show isn't getting enough attention and promotion it truly deserves. Thank you both for this wonderful reaction I subscribed.🥰

Great to see yo guys discovering and enjoying the show, but please Baz do your research before speaking. Anne and Christopher are producers in name only due to having sold the rights to AMC. Neither had any creative input after the sale and Christopher has only ever said "no comment" when asked about the series. Rolin Jones is the creative behind this adaptation and he wrote it with love and reference for Anne's work.

Great reaction video - really enjoyed it. And love the series. You mentioned Lestat's "obsessive" love, and I really liked how the show really rooted Lestat's love, for better or for worse, in his love for Nikki. Of course, book readers, see the multiple reference drops about boys of infinite beauty and sensitivity and voluminous sorrow and get excited because we know the show's going to go deep into Lestat and that homeboy has a type, ok, lol And Jacob Anderson is so amazing. This is a Louis of a different time, but I love how he so captures a character who is so highly introspective yet incredibly self-deceiving/oblivious.

Binge-watched this show only days ago (watched the film way back when, not read the books) and instantly fell in love with everything and everyone in it! Now I'm seeking out every reaction I can find, and I thought yours was wonderful, and entirely relatable! Flawed and toxic though it is, the bond between the mesmerising Lestat and the simmering Louis is SO COMPELLING! Can't wait for S2, and I'll be jumping on your reactions to every episode! Bravo!

Anne stated she "loved the movie, and it went way beyond her expectations." So I'd say you're a little off with some of the things you said. She strongly reversed her negative opinion after being sent a pre-release vhs copy by producer David Geffen. While it's true that she was originally adamantly against the film, she would go on to take out a whole 8-page ad with Daily Variety, publicly endorsing the film while taking the opportunity to apologise to the cast and producers for her disrespectful remarks. Don't forget, she also co-wrote the script for the film. And not to mention, she even left a review on Amazon praising it once again many years later. In the first novel, it wasn't a big gay romance. Louis loathed Lestat; he had nothing but contempt for him. There were fleeting moments of homo-erotic behaviour, but they're vampires, and it was never blatant. It was mostly subtext. That's until we got to The Vampire Lestat and the rest of the chronicles. They've changed that in this series, as they're utilising all the books for this show. I seriously don't know how anyone could think the movie wasn't gay enough. It was incredibly homoerotic and much more in keeping with the novel. Where as Anne and Christopher had nothing to do with the series and it shows. They're executive producers in name only. I like the series and the actors, but I think some people have either forgotten or choose to remember the first book in a different way. And that scene between Louis and Armand works perfectly in the movie, as he was teasing Armand with the one thing he wanted that he could never have. A kiss wouldn't have made sense. These vampires were all supposed to be omnisexual; they find everyone beautiful. But the series has changed that element as well. I won't go into all the changes, as there are many, but I'll say I enjoy the show as it's well made with great production. But as an adaptation of the source material, it's sadly lacking thus far.

Yeah I was wondering about that part of the Intro as well. For the show, I assume they misremembered it. Anne was trying to get a Show greenlit, but unfortunately we never got to see her vision for it. If I remember correctly the pilot was supposed to start with the second book before Lestat was turned. Anyway, I also like the show, but I see it seperately to the books, some key character traits are too different for me to feel like an adaption. It's more of a really cool fanfic alternative universe version for me.
9 ай бұрын
@@Kraehenblut Sadly, they're not the only ones. Many fans of the show seem to have forgotten or are choosing not to remember how things actually were, and that goes for the book as well. I just wish some would stop going around saying Anne and Christopher were involved in this series, as the showrunner has already made it clear they weren't. Anne's vision certainly wouldn't have been some dreamed-up fanfic. Indeed, the pilot was originally titled 'Wolf Killer', and The Vampire Lestat was going to be our introduction, as it should've been. It's a good show, just a bad adaptation of the source material. As you mentioned, too many key character traits are way off. Anne would loathe the way they've depicted Lestat in many ways, especially the domestic violence. Louis is pretty much a totally different character, but Claudia and Daniel are by far the worst offenders, imo.

Anne Rice was also an apologist and of many a thing and the BEST thing about the tv series is that it’s a meta textual adaptation and not a blind copy/paste especially with certain changes. Lestat’s abusive in the books, I don’t know why book fans keep downplaying that. I’ve read the majority of the series after watching the tv show and felt gaslit by book fans saying this shit.
