I know this supposed to be about the book, but I remember being impressed by Kirsten Dunst in the movie. More than once I had to remind myself that I was actually watching a girl perform in a movie and not a 250-year-old vampire trapped in a girl’s body.

I used to love these books. I would have said they were among my favorites. When I started my reread this past October, I could barely get through Interview and had to DNF Lestat. That was one of my favorite books! For me, the writing just did not hold up to my more modern expectations.

@@s7e6p19 totally agree with this. queen of the damned delved deep into the lore of the vampire origins. the whole "heaven and hell" thread in memnoch the devil was very weird for me, and armand going out into the sun was i think a very bizarre and uncharacteristic choice for armand. it was polarizing but still very interesting overall.

I have read the first 3 books in the chronicles, and absolutely loved them. I agree that Interview with the Vampire is one of the best vampire novels out there, alongside Dracula (I have yet to read Salem's Lot, but I plan to do it relatively soon). However, I have absolutely no interest in ever picking up the rest of the chronicles. I loved the original trilogy and the ending left me satisfied enough not to need to know more. Besides, I think that there's a big chance that I'm not gonna like the rest, so I don't wanna risk tainting my enjoyment of the trilogy.

These books were just great- I actually read them back when they came out . (Like you - Interview With The Vampire and Salem’s lot are my all time favorites) As the series went on they had some good moments and bad - but her writing was still always incredibly imaginative and almost poetic in a way. It’s amazing how incredibly influential they have been- most likely the most influential since the original Dracula. I would argue that just about every piece of Vampire fiction that has come out since then - lol yes, even alot of that YA stuff - came directly from them- Particularly in the entire mythology she created and built on. Great stuff!

13:24 - I'd add a slight amendment there: Lestat is also the guy that men want to be with, as evidenced by his many male lovers (Nicolas, Louis, Antoine, David, etc.). One thing that I love about The Vampire Chronicles is that the emotions described by the characters in it are enormous, highly acute and even incapacitating at times. They are highly sensual beings that see beauty in everything. The Dark Gift affords intense clarity to all senses. Although their being vampires is ultimately simply a framing device for immortality. The first five novels (which I consider to be Lestat's major story arc until the Prince Lestat novels) are first and foremost about emotional connections and the quest for meaning. For if one cannot find a reason to keep existing, immortality is a game you will ultimately lose. Blood and gore play a surprisingly small role in the series as a whole (though there are a few deliciously disturbing scenes scattered throughout). _Interview with the Vampire_ is very much the novel that a lot of people find difficult to finish because of Louis's despair, but when you consider that Anne Rice wrote the novel after her five-year-old daughter passed away from acute granuleucytic leukaemia, the tone of the novel can, I feel, be understood even by those who have never struggled with loss. The story becomes more meaningful, however, when the reader is capable of relating to the many human themes within. The prose itself is gorgeous, exactly my preferred style - purple though some may judge it to be. For a debut novel I feel it is a triumph. _The Vampire Lestat_ is where the Chronicles really pick up, though. Lestat is vibrant, the most alive of all his undead brethren. He is a joy to read and, frankly, an inspiration in living life to the fullest and - very much the opposite of Louis - _not_ indulging in self-hatred over the choices we make. And as for _Twilight_ ... well, let's be honest: Edward Cullen is a watered-down approximation of Louis. There, I said it.
@maggyfrog
@maggyfrog Жыл бұрын
i'd go even further and say that edward cullen is too cringe-inducing to even compare to louis.
@corpeter
@corpeter Жыл бұрын
Word! Exactly. When I read IWTV I could empathize with Louis and felt understood because I was going through depression while wondering about the meaning of it all. And I was deeply curious about Lestat for what he was not telling us but it was shining through that he is very much a guy who lives life to its fullest. Actually his approach in TVL to life and how to overcome obstacles is what helped me to deal with my depression - so in this regard he was a good teacher to me 🙂 I found it interesting that Lestat had this depression spells (therfore he was relatable instead of having a happy go lucky person all the time) but he always comes out on top. And do not even name Edward cullen in the same breath - its heresy. 🙂 But if you look Louis became the ultimate origin to all mostly dark haired brooding vampire: Angel, Bill; Stephan to name a view - while Lestat the father for: Spike, Erik, Damon (although not a blonde), Claus and so on. And much of the lore and skills and powers that AR developed were taken and included in the lore that came after her book IWTV. She became immortal herself. I came here after the show IWTV to ground myself, I am so torn apart about it. May do a re-read would be something like my 2oish..time but its been like 2 years so why not.
@maggyfrog

@@corpeter ugh this is SO true. the show is tearing apart the carefully crafted character nuances and overall arcs of the leads. it's so strange that the show is trying so hard to almost "own" them like the books never happened.
@corpeter
@corpeter Жыл бұрын
@@maggyfrog yes it feels like that. I did comment here and there that Lestat is onedimensional as a choice of the narrations and people go like he is evil, sadistic, abusive and therefore onedimensional in the books, while in the show he tries to accomodate Louis etc. But they tell a story of abuse (this is well done I give them that) and play heavily on the unreliable narrator - but this way they can easily say it never happend as they did with the "first interview aka the books" that never happened. All this while saying its true to the core. But well Louis, Lestat, Armand are such deeply layered characters - and it is never either one or the other is lying - all POVs are true at the same time. Thats what is so wonderful about the book. And all this while being scary bloody vampires.

You would probably enjoy the mid-'90s tv show 'Forever Knight'. It has elements of both the Vampire Chronicles and Highlander franchises. @@mikesbookreviews I agree. I was liked book 4 - Louis was in it a bit more - also I kinda liked TVA but probably because I do like his character quite a bit. But with later books imo she scrapes at the surface a lot and while the universe gets bigger, the stories never achieve to go as deep or deeper than the first 3: I waned to know more but it just does not happen or repeats it. But she is still a good writer. Her last 3 of the Chronics have some of the old spark and are far better than the many in between imo, yet she has become softer and the last 3 reads as the goodbye to the beloved characters that it was meant to be. It is kinda sentimental look at them. Glad she did put an effort to wrap it up though. Because I did not want to read them at first, cause some of the later books were not my cup of tea, but I am glad I did and it felt complete. Now they live on the shadows...

What about reading the rest of the series and comparing where it has gone? That would be interesting. I haven’t read past Menoch the Devil, but I hear Atlantis comes into the picture lol.

I’ve read through Blood and Gold...you’re right after Queen of the Damned they were just Meh...Tale of the Body Thief wasn’t too bad. I loved the original trilogy. Is as so fascinated with the origins of the vampires. HOWEVER...her Mayfair Witches books...SO GOOD! I almost liked them better than the vampire books. And you start to get a bit of a crossover between the witches and the vampires with a character named David. Her book The Mummy was also quite good, but a bit more erotica than the other books.

Interview with the Vampire is excellent. And I would recommend stopping there. It's a good story and thematically complete with an ending that I thought was brilliant. The two sequels are ok but mess with the story and themes of the original without bringing anything new to table that was on the same level.

The series does change and Anne Rice retconned a decent bit of stuff from the first book. Though she did it in a very well done and plausible way. So for some book 1 alone tells a wonderful yet tragic story that is complete and technically needs no sequels. I would not recommend stopping there though because in my opinion book 2 is the best in the series by far. However if you read book 2 then you gotta read book 3 which is admittedly not nearly as good.

I agree with you completely. Didn't like how Anne Rice rectonned things in book 2, assassinated Louis' character and changed Lestat into something very different from the character in the original book. However, book 2 is enjoyable in its own way, even if it drags on and lags in places. Book 3 was a huge letdown for me, though.

@@aumelb Oh no I actually love all of that lol. And going the unreliable narrator route I thought worked well. To each their own I guess. I do agree that book 3 was a letdown. There was too much time spent on characters I didn't care about, like Jesse and Daniel.

After reading the entire series you come to realize that Interview was almost just a preview into what was to become an amazing world that Rice created, well in my opinion at least. I became totally invested in all the characters, the history and their lore. I loved it all.

I read all these books when I was 18 or so. I loved them back then, but over time they've dropped down in my rankings. In 2000 and 2001 they didn't have quite as much competition. I believe I read them all. I do remember liking the Body Snatcher one, but some of the other later books were just meh.

I liked this book. Rice is a master of sensuous descriptions. It was also more thoughtful than I expected, which was nice. This and Cry to Heaven are the only books by her that I've though. (And the movie has one of my favorite Tom Cruise performances! XD)

Tom Cruise NAILED it in that movie. If im correct Anne Rice was very apprehensive about the choice but in the end was quite happy with his portrayal of Lestat.

I truly gave this book a hard try. Even after about 120 pages in, I constantly found myself spacing out and not really digesting what I was reading since it was just simply BORING. Louis is the sorriest excuse for a vampire. I wouldn't even consider this a 'horror' novel. Just not for me. Rice focuses a lot on emotions and sensations and philosophy.

Your high school had fiction?? Mine didn't have any fiction unless it was Chaucer or Shakespeare (they didn't even have other "required reading"). Pretty sure they spent all of the budget on 10 PowerMacs with internet capability.

I've read the first 5 books from the original Vampire Chronicles and a couple of the new books in high school, that's 20 years ago. I just loved the way vampires here acted, it made them so ... real ... so human. The dark setup, the dark universe, it gave you a sense of unease, like you needed to look over your shoulder. Some time after when my girlfriend asked me to watch Twilight and I saw the skin of the vampire shine like diamonds, I just stopped watching and started explaining her that those are not vampires. The movie adaptation was also really good and in tone with the book. But like you said, it feels like it should have stopped after 3, the others don't have the same feeling as the first 3. And from these, I liked Queen of the Damned the most, but i'm keeping this for that specific review.

I know I'll get some flack here, but too many female authors in the forefront these days (with flaunty covers). Want to read an awesome book? Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. The rest of the Oxford time travel stuff is excellent as well, but Doomsday Book - way ahead of its time.

who else prefers that the VC just ended with blood canticle? the whole scattered nature of the prince lestat books are generally a dud for me. and the whole scifi crossover is off-putting mainly because those 3 books ceased to be the lush gothic horror that the 12 books have been established as.
