I've been working in animation company for nearly 8years and the work culture is the same. It's a competitive place for artists and there's always a time or a year when we don't get enough sleep (1 or 2hours/day) just to finish our work before the deadline. We're paid $9 each LO in the contract but we take home $8 as for company regulation is they take $1 and release it when the show is completed (they say it's our bonus but there's anomaly in there) We're sometimes given a nearly impossible task like finishing a full landscape BG in a day and I get it that it's annoying at times but it's part of the job we applied for. It's a happy place for workaholics and competitive but for people seeking a work- life balance, it's not. MAPPA must be lucky to have kind PA's. In our studio, PA's are like wardens. They're the one who gives us so much pressure and a lot of them doesn't even think we're human who needs to sleep and also gets sick.

Great job getting these interviews! What we need to do is diversify the top crust shows across more studios. The reason shows like Aot and JJK suffered so much from MAPPA were because they were made by committee. Meaning that there was a higher board demanding dates. While something like CSM had no committee and had far better work environment. Its why there is so much more visible passion, and spirit in CSM than Aot and JJK. It just looks more refined because there wasent as much of a whip there to force them to get it out on sharp brutal deadlines. In Aot or JJk there are plenty of shots of just missing body parts, bad animation quality, stale png shots etc that just come with not giving them time to be dynamic

very well put video, as someone who's a fan of anime production and animation, its kinda nice seeing a more sensitized video about it that neutrally assesses the situation without immediately calling their viewers to start going on twitter guns blazing. i think as the people who consumes anime content we really need to be critical of what we say online and ourselves before talking about the animation industry that we aren't even supposed to be a part of. this is turning too political than your average mappa anime quality debate, PA's are hiring teenagers, no union pay, and exploiting the business practices for profit. this is not a weeb's war. animators forcing their public twitter accounts as a portfolio SHOULDN'T BE A THING, thats where toxic teenagers go and ratio you for any slip up for clout. which is what's happening with these freelance animators.

Thanks for taking the time to cover this. It's been knowledge for a number of years now that working conditions as a animator in Japan, to oversimplify; I know there are companies that are exceptions, is horrible. And it feels criminal that it has continued for so long, especially given the popularity of anime/manga in recent years. I'm not sure what the community as a collective can do but i'm happy more channels are talking about it. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end.

sounds like they need to hire well experienced animators to work as supervisors/trainers that help train the less experienced freelancers and send back the genga work faster/fix small animation errors. Eventually they could use these supervisors to hire some of them permanently because they would know who was the easiest to work/most motivated.

@bizklaustdeity311511 ай бұрын
Donate? The only thing you can help them is to directly buy their Blu-ray/DVD box sets because these are the only merchandise that goes directly into the production studio. Everything else are from their sponsors and IP holder companies which doesn't contribute into paying these animators at all. The worse is that those other merchandise sales figures only goes a little to pay for their production fees which had to be allocated amongst their production team from the CEO to the directors and lastly their janitors.

I feel very bad for them, as well as the fact that the whole of the Mappa is such a large company. But tbh we shouldn't/probably don't have to put their system down like this. This is because Mappa, who works on multiple animes every week needs many workers, (High working or no rest). And if we were to shut down the work condition for them, which are not illegal nor anywhere close to being illegal, our animes and weekly enjoyment would just disappear. We do need to make sure to convince the Mappa system that it is indeed wrong, but without shutting them down.

The pushing to do your best and learn from industry masters I believe is great, but doing so many late request hours one after another, getting no sleep or rest and taking on multiple projects at once is just too much. There has to be a balance of quality work with enough time to do so and less work taken aboard. And yeah the hiring process being that lax for such a massive productions is odd. Low pay at $20 an hour for this type of work too is insane. I would not mind waiting even a month or more per episode of Jujutsu Kaisen. Longer even for the quality of work.

@blinkzeninyourarea814311 ай бұрын
Tbh, I think it matters on the company. Because there definitely are companies that first aim to finish the animations and then later air them. But then also the MAPPA animators usually aren’t working on one project at a time, but more so 2 to 3 projects (animated movies/series) which all require different deadlines and countless hours of work. But this is just a theory that I came up with so maybe there are other factors playing too.

Animator here,well thats why id recommend the public to fund indie animation projects from animators in these industries, so that you directly pay the animators rather than the middle management folks or marketing team that eats up most of the budget. While the industry suffers because of poor upper management that usually disregards the health of their workers. The management jobs are better compared to the animation teams and director jobs at the end of the day. Any one joining an animation company would do better as a pa rather than as an animator, given animation is more labour extensive, and market doesn't reward labour itself. It rewards accessibility and the management & marketing does that most of the time. So i guess its about who brings in more money at the end of the day. Also agreed with people educating themselves about the real animators behind the cuts rather than praising the company, the company just made ot accessible and organised it, everything else was individual people who spend days in burnout to give you good stuff. :) Also keep at it fellow animators 💪.

I think the work culture Japan has also has a blame to it. Japanese are told to do their job, some loose meals to finish deadlines, sleeping on the job so that they can wake up on the office and start straight away is not uncommon, and thats not talking abt animation. I heard women that were harassed on the subway don't do anything because they need to get to their jobs first and it's quite sad. So when you put this, in a job that requires hours to do seconds, you can really feel it's a bad combo. And maybe it's because of this give your soul kind of work that made Japan create so many amazing animes. Production of animation in the west is still very fast, but not on this level. If only they decided better laws of work for animators but then again, a lot of other areas would have to change because it's not a problem only in this industry

Could you please tell the names of the movies you use as a background? I'm a huge movie buff and I've been wanting to get into Japanese cinema. The shots and sequences in this video were just incredible eye-candy and I'd love to see the full film :)

Hey I’m in exactly the same boat lol If you’re still looking, I did an image search and I believe the clips are from a film called “Tampopo” by director Juzo Itami (at least some of the clips, idk if there are clips from other films)

Funny how people just now realize that they have horrible working conditions when having horrible working conditions is the norm in japan for decades now.

HEY READ THIS PLEASE LOL. Can you get in contact with folks in the Japanese animation industry to identify maybe the Top 3-5 Studios that treat their staff WELL. That way those of us who want to support humanity in this industry can do so?

is there anything we can do to support the animators? aside from thanking them directly from their work.
