Steve brings you along his trip to South Africa and takes you to Fugitive's Drift Lodge, along the banks of the Buffalo River. He interviews Douglas Rattray, a local expert and battlefield guide, to discuss the Anglo-Zulu War. This video also includes an interview with Mphiwa Ntanzi, a local guide who had ancestors in the Zulu army at the Battle of Isandlwana.
If you haven't yet seen our incredible Isandlwana wargame, be sure to check that out next!

What a joy to listen to these interviews! I had the great pleasure of staying at Fugitives' Drift in 1996 and was guided round Isandlwana by Douglas' father. David was a phenomenal orator and kept our group utterly enthralled throughout with his description of the battle and the characters on both sides... It seems like Douglas has definitely inherited his father's talent!!

Wow. Loved the interviews! Wouldn't mind going there one day, and hope to get those 2 as guides.

Very informative! And while "amateurish" is one way to describe it, it's also the main reason I like this "stupid channel." No polish, no lipstick. Just having fun!

That was definitely the trip of a lifetime! You get a sense of the friendliness/knowledge and willingness to share of your hosts. The bayonet charge of the last company and that view must have been surreal to those lads.

I found it quite refreshing listening to an American talking with such authority about an event that wasn't American history , I would have loved to been sat in that spot and listened to them . I was there 32 years ago when David was still alive

Steve, I gotta say that was an excellent presentation and the knowledge and passion of both Mphiwa and Douglas is obvious and infectious. My father has told me that his great grandfather was a member of the party who were supposed to look after Louis-Napoleon (but failed - mainly due the prince regent's impetuousness). I hope the toilet is clean now.....

great video. I game the period in 28mm. check out a great show called history buffs and they go over the movie Zulu. he quotes some facts that the end of the movie was inaccurate. the Zulus did not pause for the British at the end of the battle. thank you for putting together this great interview. keep up the awesome work!

The Zulu were the Spartans of the Africa of their day. I’d love to read a good book about how Shaka defeated all the other tribes around.

Yes, the story of his own imperial success does tend to play second fiddle to the war with the British.

The British lost the first battle by sheer outnumbering, plus the zulus high on "snuff" (cannabis) making them feel invincible and alert, but the 3-4 thousand that split off to Rorkes drift were by now spent of a good deal of their energy having travelled that afternoon as much as the others and were now facing a concentrated area of firepower from men who were fresh for battle, so Rorkes drift became a success for the British.

From different accounts I've read the distribution or difficulty because of distances of ammunition from the troops was an issue in both engagements. Not the only issue but pulling men from the line to run for resupply, also the positioning of supplies, is an impediment. Small things add up.

Get a Sony A6400 camera and attach a larger external monitor like the ANDYCINE A6 5.7Inch 1920x1080 for checking focus. This is cheap and essential for your channel.

I've Never heard Anybody say that the British positions at Isandlwana were planned or executed intelligently or properly. A camp that was too spread out, not laggered, ZERO defensive positions prepared, a battle line that was too spread out AND too far from the camp Really BAD recon.... Leaving a commander in charge of the camp who had never been in a battle (which doesn't HAVE to be a bad thing....I think in this case it turned out to be) ONLY THEN do we get to chelmsfords blunder of splitting his force....

My god, you guys spent a lot of time and videos, on the Anglo-Zulu War period. The Napoleonic period is much more popular in wargaming, but you guys show only show one video on that time period. Two, if you count Trafalgar!
