Maxon OD808 vs Maxon OD808X Overdrive Pedal Shootout

In a nutshell: OD808 - Highs removed, less gain. OD808x - Highs retained, more gain. I prefer the latter. When you have extra gain on hand with OD808X, you can always turn it down. However if you dont have enough gain from OD808 and want more, you are toast. Always have more power than you think you need. Learnt this the hard way.

I ABSOLUTELY love the green one. I own it and use it for incredible metal tones. If we say 7 oclock is the drive all the way down i run mine just below 9 oclock the balance at about 2 oclock (if 5 oclock is all the way up) and the tone at about 2 oclock as well and no matter what amp i run it into it just seems to focus and tighten everything up. Certainly a must have pedal for any style of music.

I prefer the Green OD808. Although - both sound very similar and (as you pointed-out) the Red OD808X, is somewhat Hotter & seems capable of moving from an Overdrive to a Distortion. 2 Great Pedals. You can't go wrong with either. Nice job with the Comparison. - Michael Caz - NYC -

I too prefer the green 808. It's just that I like my guitar tones to be smooth, not piercing or harsh in any way. Both are great sounding pedals, though. Great review as always!
