▶ Some notes (Not Rules!!) -
EQ - listen to the vocal and ask yourself
"what does this need more of?" or
"what does this have too much of?"
This should help focus your EQ choices :)
Compression -
Set ratio at 3:1 and lower the threshold until you are hearing and seeing compression. Then set the attack, release and ratio until you are happy with the result.

I really appreciate the fact that your tutorials actually teach how to understand what you're doing - not just saying "okay, now set this plugin to this setting, and that will sound better". Wonderful Video Michael! and here's a few things I would like to recommend you guys :) 1) Use volume automations before compression (it sounds more natural) - pls dont over do it - handy tip: if you have a MIDI controller, map a knob / fader from the controller to a gain knob and use it to "ride" the volume and record the automation. It works wonders and saves time. 2) I would highly recommend to use the fruity convolver instead of fruity reverb 2 on vocals! (it has a lot of presets too hehe and sounds better than fruity reverb 2 usually) 3) And I can't stress enough the importance of using 3rd party (free) plugins! the FL Studio stock plugins are great, but they dont sound so great in comparison to other 3rd party plugins (especially EQs and Compressors).
@dawin6710
@dawin6710 3 жыл бұрын
Volume automation is the last thing when mixing. As all those painstaking work would be overridden as soon as the track volume is touched. Any volume automation belongs to the final stages of mix, unless one uses an auxiliary bus for the overall volume of each track. But then that's not what Michael is doing here.
@TRNQUL
@TRNQUL 3 жыл бұрын
@@dawin6710 You can use a plugin like Fruity Balance as the first on the chain and automate that so it doesn't affect the other plugins. Or you could even automate the volume knob on the step sequencer as that also affects the waveform directly, before being inputted to the mixer channel.
@snaekboi
@snaekboi 3 жыл бұрын
@@dawin6710 its partially true, but I mean it when I say volume automation before everything. Automations before compressors give a more natural sound IMO and Takes some load off the compressors Of course, at the end of the day you can make volume automations after all the processing u have done to make it fit in the mix even better!

I can't believe how helpful the Fruity Limiter is for beginners learning and understanding compression. It literally shows you when and where compression hits, how much it lowers the sound, how fast it does it, and how long it takes until it's over; all through a simple visual. Can't believe no-one else I've watched has done that to teach how compression fully works.

Beautifully explained as ever. If I'm honest I never really understood why one compresses twice, now I do. Also parallel processing - creating new sounds to sit alongside the original (rather than changing it), good stuff. I'll now spend a week or two re-doing all my tracks . . . . .again ! Many thanks as usual top video.

Hey Micheal, I have a little trick for you to reduce your mixer latency, if you don't already know it. The attack of the limiter in Fruity Limiter acts like a lookahead and therefore adds latency to the mixer. Also when you are using the compressor, the limiter part stays active and therefore still adds latency if the attack is turned up. So if you're only using the compressor part, you could just completely turn down the limiter attack and remove any latency of the plugin. I hope I could help you a bit, since your videos really helped me over the past few years! :)

Don't invest in samples right away, there are so many free sample resources online! As for getting good, it depends on your musical ability. The technical aspects of a DAW can be mastered in a matter of weeks or months if you are using it daily. However, the musical skills required to arrange and compose compelling music can take months, years or decades to master depending on your ability, focus and time.

Stock plugins should be mastered first, in order to invest in a good paid plugin. People usually buy stuff because of popularity and without exploring the stock plugins first, serum is the most appropriate example of that.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like Serum is just leagues ahead of FL stock synths in terms of ease-to-learn, I started off with 3xOsc and was just floored with how much more versatility there was with Serum. Compare it to something like Sytrus which has a very high skill floor, I can understand why people would gravitate towards it. I've never used Harmless but I suppose that would be a decent alternative to learn

i actually compress with maximus now while de-essing. And i do this in the mastering process. No need to compress when the track is nowhere near it's loudest. I used to start with compression, cause tutorials told me so. The more i know, the more i start to think that there are no rules. But these tutorials are definitely a good starting point. You, among others, thought me a lot.

Dude you helped me out so much!!! My track has been sound harsh and I probably used like ten de-essers and like ten compressors and it was just sounding like absolute rubbish. With you're help i will take this knowledge to the grave so its very much appreciated! Much love and God bless ❤️
