Great video, I wish I had seen it before. Last year, Jan 2023 I drove from London to Zurich went with friends to Austria then drove on to SkiWelt in Austria, back to Zurich to do washing and down to Verbier and then back from Verbier to London. I absolutely loved the trip and driving. 3 week trip. I drove because the previous year I had done 3 return flights from London and I thought of the fuel usage and price. However my price of driving was very different to yours. Also I was on my own as not many friends could take 3 weeks off. For me 3 week trip, driving on my own, just driving costs were about £1483 to drive 1904 miles through 3 countries. Flying the previous year on BA where they take a ski bag and a big cabin bag and including transfers cost about £600. Flights were cheap with avios and main cost was transfers.

Another cost advantage of driving to the Alps is being able to ski in different resorts & avoid car hire charges. My sister & I spend a month or so in Champex Lac (Suisse), close to the Italian & French borders every season & get to ski there as well as Verbier, Villars, Portes du Soleil plus Crevacol & Pila (Italy) & Argentieres & Chamonix. I don't carry heavy chains anymore as Snowsocks are now a legal alternative. Don't forget winter or all season tyres with the 3 peaks/snowflake symbol. I use all seasons so I don't have to change them in summer.

I love driving to the Alps - far superior to the flying experience these days, in my opinion. The Telepeage is a must have, it doesn't save you any money on the tolls, but I reckon it saves about half an hour on a journey from Calais to the Moutiers. You never actually stop moving and there are quite a lot of Peages on the Dijon to Moutiers section of the drive. I wouldn't be without one. In addition, I don't think you need to have a breathalyzer any more. I checked before travelling last month and I'm told that even when it was law to have one the Gendarmerie couldn't actually enforce the fine, so they've now dropped it. You forgot to mention the extra skiing you can do as well! We ski the last morning, leave about lunchtime and reach Calais for the midnight crossing.

Was going to ask this question and I saw you’ve mentioned it so thought I’d comment on yours… What’s the best way of getting a Telepeage in the UK? Is there a ‘go-to’ site for ordering them?

I’m going to Avoriaz with my daughter in a month’s time flying out of shithole Luton airport. I’m now wondering if taking the car makes more sense…I hadn’t considered doing the entire trip in a day so no need for expensive hotel rooms half way there!

Delays can happen anywhere, a general strike accross France is not unusual. You could be out skiing in quick time if you travel by air or you could be bumming around for 10 hours on obscure continental highways like Ed 😂😂

@@Inthesnowmag we will be driving from UK to French alps in a RWD 1 series BMW, you think this is safe even with winter tyres ?
@Inthesnowmag10 ай бұрын
Obviously the weather is the weather so there's no telling what it could be like. The Alps weather patterns last couple of years is bigger snow earlier December time. Then dry or warmer January February then bigger snow March. If you haven't driven winter tyres before you will be amazed what difference there make they can cope with a lot! For total safety I would get a pair of snow chains too. I was in pila and Chamonix last new year and i had neither winter tyres not chains and was fine. But I think I Def got lucky. Iv nearly got caught out in Chamonix and it's a legal requirement to have winter tyres in resorts over about 1200mnib think it is. So winter tyres ✅ snow chains ideally.
