I want to thank you whole heartedly for your teaching. I feel connected to the way you talk and teach. I am so very grateful to learn the essentials, the science, the principles. I am working through all of your videos and learning so much in each one. I took up painting a year ago to help with panic attacks after a heart emergency. I dont need to be famous LOL but I do want to do well and do my best in my painting. I hope you know something of the absolutely valuable assistance you give. God bless you and your family. What a gift of art and teaching you have. And your generosity of spirit. Im so very glad I found your channel.

Your videos are my go to first. I understand you best of all that I have watched. I wish that you had been in my life when I was young. No telling what I would be doing now. Instead I am a goat and cattle farmer. I make ice cream when time permits. I want to paint my farm and went looking for knowledge and found you. Utube is what tv could use more of. I bought 2 books to study on. Notan, The Dark-Light Principle of Design. and Finding Freedom To Create by Dianne Mize. A Painter's Roadmap. Do you have any other books to recommend? I have not seen all of your videos but hope to do so. Life on a farm is so very busy. There will be babies here come January. Your videos are a mini vacation for me. Thank you so much for putting your knowledge out there for us.

Thanks, Virginia. And thanks for plugging my book, Finding Freedom to Create. I would love to paint your goats and cows. As for books I recommend, one of my treasures is Zen Seeing, Zen drawing by Frederick Franck. It's been out of print for a while now, but hopefully available somewhere. My other very favorite is Alla Prima by Richard Schmid. That one is pricy, but worth every penny (perhaps I should say "dollar"). Those two are among the few that for me, are more like handbooks. One suggestion that might get you going: go to my website and watch the free video from the menu. It shows how to apply the notan principle to realistic painting. https:diannemize.com . My best wishes. Happy farming and happy painting.

Thank you so much for this tip, Dianne. I have been struggling with mixing the color I want, and now I understand why. It’s like I’ve found the key to the problem! I do wonder, however, if tube colors vary among manufacturers.... Actually, I have been painting with acrylics and watching all your tips and videos has convinced me to switch to oils! I am also enjoying your book “Finding Freedom to Create: A Painter’s Roadmap” and have recommended it to a friend. Thank you for all your teachings!

It takes a bit of trial-and-error for painters to decide which manufacturer's colors they prefer. Yellow ochre is especially problematic, and so is sap green and especially viridian. I despise most viridians, but absolutely love the one Rembrandt makes. Even Gamblin's viridian doesn't quite do it for me. Thanks for plugging my book!

Dear Dianne, actually I always await Wednesdays to watch your tips. No need to say how important and nice is your teaching. This tip solved one of my mistakes: I used the think that when a color's hue inclines to the next color on color wheel, it is less saturated, but now I now that less saturation of color means its contamination with its complement color ( am I right?). One request: would you please suggest a limited pallet colors which could be useful for plain air painting and perhaps in the studio painting as well. Is the colors suggested by Mark Carder suitable. There are a lot of discussions and suggestions on the internet, but it seems that artists have different opinion on a limited pallet colors. Thanks a lot for your time and teachings.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct, Reza. Adjacent colors on the wheel, when mixed together, change in hue, but saturation changes when the complement is added. About your request for a good plein air palette, that is an individual choice. Most plein air painters will swear by their chosen palette of colors, but a lot depends upon your unique preferences as well as the area in which you are painting. I prefer my current palette of 9 colors, but it is geared towards teaching and painting in the north Georgia mountains. I would say, begin with one that appeals to you, whether Mark Carder's 4+white or my 9+white. Mark's is excellent for the fewest colors. Work with that one, then experiment with what works best for you.

Great content, thanks so much. I do mostly watercolor but find that nearly everything you teach is generally applicable regardless of media. This QT is a perfect example. I’m still struggling with getting the proper complements for my particular red violet & blue violet (purple, I call both.) Lets just say lots of unappealing results are possible.I use these “hues” quite a bit for flowers. The only way I can successfully neutralize either is to go with Neutral Tint. (I can neutralize violet just fine using a yellow.) Its fun, isn’t it? I think so.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Sallie. You are on point: most of these tips do apply to all painting mediums. Neutralizing your red violet and blue violet in watercolors depends the hue of the tube colors you are using. For example, Daniel Smith sap green (a yellow green) + Daniel Smith Quinacridone Violet (a red violet) will not completely neutralize each other, but add a bit of ultramarine blue and joilà! This is a good example of why understand the HUE of your tube colors is important.

Thank you for helping my art improve over the years. I have a question. Is it fair to use this color comparison with taking it one step further. There is phthalo blue - green and phthalo blue - red. Would you not want to include the comparison of each of these phthalo blue shades and explain them also? In my early art career I had purchased the phthalo blue - red shade by mistake because nobody had told me there were two different phthalo blue shades and what each one does. I was so frustrated when I couldn’t make my color combinations work like the tutorials showed it would. I realized my error quite by accident, studying it with delight instead of frustration with further trial and error. Thank you Diane for all you do for the art community and the pure joy of art.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction 5 жыл бұрын
Frankly, I object to these thalo blue shade formulas. I'd stick with Winsor Blue (thalo) or any other professional brand that is straight thalo blue. As to your first question, it is fair to explore color in whatever direction you choose so long as it is for you a learning experience.
