Thank you for this quick tip. If I may suggest, can you come up with more painting exercices quick tips and regroup them in a play list. 🙂

This is a great exercise, I can’t wait to try it!! I really like finding exercises to do and not trying to do a complete a painting all of the time (like a musician practicing scales as you have said). It’s one of the great things about your video lessons too, you focus on one aspect of painting at a time. There are lots of follow along type painting videos, but this kind of thing is rare if not impossible to find from others. And, as someone else said, thanks for the reminder to have fun!!

I like for students to develop their skills rather than copy what I'm doing. That way you can use the skill for any subject you paint.

Now I know what I’ll be doing this evening! Being a total newbie to oil painting, I can see how this practice will help with technique and confidence- especially confidence! Excellent explanation, Dianne!

I always like listening to you, you’re such a genuine presenter. I might suggest an addition to the title - brush exercise for oil - this wouldn’t apply to other mediums.

Dianne, I learned more about how to maneuver the brush from this Quick Tip than from anything else till now! Thank you for it. You can be sure that I will be doing this exercise many times. I do have some minor questions, though, about the tip. Firstly: with what did you "dampen the brush" before you started painting (7'03")? If it's a solvent I won't know what to do.. Secondly: did you treat the canvas, itself, with poppy oil before the demo? Thirdly: the brush doesn't seem to look like a filbert -- at least not on my monitor? Is it? Lastly (on a different subject, actually) will you be doing a quick tip on different methods of value correcting when combining two colors (without constantly seeking out the value finder)? Squinting doesn't always help me to match the two values. Thank you once again! Carol

Carol, I always dampen my brush with a bit of Gamsol, then dry it thoroughly. That's just to condition the brush to make it work more smoothly. I always treat the canvas with a bit of poppy oil to take away the surface friction, so yes. I can do a Quick Tip on value correcting. It will be March, though, before it appears on KZbin. Keep enjoying the journey.

Thanks for your reply, Dianne. What do I do about dampening the brush if I am sensitive to solvents, though? Won't a dry brush do the job if I use Rembrandt paints. They're very creamy. And, yes, I'm enjoying the journey! Carol.

Make oils water mixable by using medium W by schmincke....no solvents only water....im enjoying thiß too

@@sujanithtottempudi2991 That's an interesting idea. Thank you. but what I'm asking about is the initial conditioning of the brush, itself?
@IntheStudioArtInstructionКүн бұрын
Carol, it's not so much about a dry brush doing the job as it is about prolonging the life of the brush. Dipping it into poppy oil, the squeezing out all the oil with a paper towel should work just as well.

@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Great. I had hoped so! I fairly recently added a new Robert Simmons (Signet) brush to my extensive collection. For the first time the hairs seem very dry. From now on I'll know what to do, thanks to you. By the way it's really fun experimenting with the brushstrokes (after so many years.)

There are new solvents and mediums without solvent, the Sennelier Green Line ones are excellent!

Please tell me, as a new oil painter, what medium should we use? I paint inside.
@AzureSymbiote3 күн бұрын
Liquin would be a good medium. As for thinner: Sennelier Green For Oil.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 күн бұрын
The medium you should use is the one you relate to most. I've been painting inside with oils since 1960! No problem there.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 күн бұрын
Oh, you're talking about the painting medium. Liquin facilitates drying. Actually, it's best to use an artist quality of paint and use no medium at all. If your paint should seem a bit thick, just add a drop of refined linseed oil in and mix it thoroughly.

Dianne....what paper are u using for practice
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 күн бұрын
This practice with oils is done on sheet canvas cut from a roll of Fredrix Universal canvas.
@lindastevenson47462 күн бұрын
My paint is not nearly as creamy as yours, definitely doesn’t go as far.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction2 күн бұрын
If paint has been in the tube for a long time, the oil will separate out causing it to be less creamy. If you add a drop of refined linseed oil to it and thoroughly mix it into the paint, you will restore its creaminess.
