Great video. I've been painting for years but I am picking up little tips from you that I've never heard before, such as dipping the brush in gamsol before painting, and the mixture of gamsol/poppy-linseed oil on the canvas before painting. You are a gifted teacher. You have an easy way of explaining what is often complex and confusing to beginners, and offering tips for the more experienced as well.

I'm a new painter, so I've watched a lot of videos, and missed many more. But this is, without a doubt, one of the most valuable things I've watched. Putting paint onto the brush, and getting it off again, are never talked about. Arm motion, angle of the brush, so often ignored. Huge thanks for this clear, complete and essential lesson! Many thumbs up.

Hi, Dianne, Thanks for the rigger tip. About pre-wetting the brush with solvent: I can't be exposed to solvents. You had once advised me that I could pre-wet the canvas with either linseed oil or walnut oil medium (and then wipe it off.) Could I use this same procedure with the paintbrush, i.e, dip it into the oil and then wipe off the excess? Thanks so much for your guidance. All the best.

Awesome demo. I learn so easily from your explanations and demos. Having said that I practice since my hand is untrained. Does the moist apply to acrylic paints too for easier application to the canvas? Thank you again Dianne.
@leonieknowles2832
@leonieknowles2832 Жыл бұрын
It makes it easier if you apply a painting gel to your canvas to allow your acrylics to go on properly. Ask your art store what is appropriate for your brand of acrylics
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction Жыл бұрын
Leonie's answered this one just right. Wet paint of any kind goes on more smoothly to a moist surface rather than a dry one.

Excellent and informative ! One question: Is there any disadvantage to using saffron oil to rinse and clean the brush before loading the paint, instead of the gamsol solvent? Some vendors recommend this "solvent free" approach.
@leonieknowles2832
@leonieknowles2832 Жыл бұрын
Did you mean safflower oil Grant ? Never heard of saffron oil. There are non-toxic solvents like lavender spike oil, Gamblin solvent free gel or you could use walnut, linseed, poppy or safflower oil to clean your brush. You can also use soap and water or there are several proprietary products like Masters soap or brush cleaner. Dianne also has Quicktip 327 that you could look at. The only trouble with cleaning your brushes with oil is that you have to make sure you get the oil out of your brush before you paint again or you will affect your oil paint.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction Жыл бұрын
Grant, safflower oil and others used to replace solvents are slow-drying oils, so my caution would be that you are always thoroughly dry your brush after each rinsing, otherwise it will slow the drying of your paint. Also, I would not recommend the faster drying oils such as linseed for rinsing because if you neglect to wash your brush after a session, those will gum up your brushes more quickly than the slower drying oils. And that brings up my next caution: when using oils as a rinse substitute, always wash your brushes thoroughly with soap and water after a painting session, otherwise, they will eventually gum up.

Hello, I've enjoyed many of your videos! Being a scholar (science) in another life, I like to learn by reading as well. I wanted to ask whether you might do a "Quick Tip Video" on books that would be relevant to viewers of your channel. Perhaps you would some that you've chosen as college textbooks in your teaching? Thank you for considering this idea!
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this suggestion. I think it would make a good Quick Tip. My academic studies were in the 1960-70's and oddly, most of those textbooks are out of print. But there are a few standard ones in reprint, and some more recently written books that every painter should own. Look for it to appear on KZbin towards the end of May. We film several weeks in advance.

@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Thank you very much for your reply! I will look forward to seeing the books on your list. So far, my results have been "hit and miss". My favorite "hit" was (John) Carlson's, "Guide To Landscape Painting", first published as part of a longer work in 1928. When he writes, "in the last century", one has to "do the math"! : )

Hi. But what about pre "wetting" the brush if one wants to paint solvent free ... use linseed oil?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
@IntheStudioArtInstruction Жыл бұрын
Rob, you can prewet the brush with solvent as long as you dry it thoroughly before loading it with paint. Enough dampness remains in the brush to enable the paint to flow from it.
