I am planning a painting that has very bright light shining through grapes that are green And red and yellow and truly glowing. The best answer for me was watering down my pigment. I never would have done that. I would have just piled on the paint. Loved every tip.

This has been really helpful, I have transformed a couple of wishy washy paintings using tonal contrast, (and being a lot bolder with the strength of colours because of drying lighter). Also allowing paper to shine through colours. Thank you, these are great tips

It's easy to get caught up in the beautiful colors and forget that without TONAL CONTRAST you aren't going to create an engaging painting. I'm still struggling with this. As far as student grade paints are concerned, I'm quite pleased with the basic colors I have but I am looking forward to trying new artist grade colors very soon. I've been working hard and I think I deserve it! Your videos are so helpful and encouraging!!

Your videos really help me, like solid advice & quality unbiased information. I can always count on gaining either a piece of new helpful info, or at least the confidence to go have a try at some new technique or improve my own methods some how. That last point is spot on! Its always part of the process for me, I feel meh & unsure about my wc paintings until the deeper shadows are represented then suddenly Im like "Oh wow, this is actually pretty good!" I have given up on some works just bc Id been feeling so blah about them. Also, I love the stained glass analogy, not just for the contrast, but also the whole light coming from the backside. I have really gotten into my wc art now, like Im confident enough to call myself proficient & would show other ppl my works. My current joy is making watercolour polaroids of my family and sticking them to the front of the fridge using peg magnets. Im currently powering thru all my cheaper wc paper (front & back) to practice different styles & techniques as much as possible, but half the work of getting better is whats going on in your head & how you understand your medium, goals, theories, etc. Like, I genuinely dont know if I could paint with acrylics anymore, not just because I proffer watercolour paints, but Im so deep into the wc artist mindset, Id ignore the white paint altogether, paint in the wrong order, get confused about blending, get frustrated with the thickness of the paints. And frankly, Ive always adored watercolour paintings, so Im more than okay about it. 🤣

It's a good idea to choose a limited palette for each painting. Pull in a couple of colours you think are suitable, check you have a version of each of the primaries, and at least one staining colour. Start with those and only add another colour when you absolutely have to. This keeps your colour palette harmonious for each painting.

The nails are stunning, must have taken hours, and put a considerable in your purse... Always picking up a handy tip or two from your videos. Mostly common sense, but society seems to be breeding that out of people these days. Remember the Bob Ross bravery test? Here's one for you. Now you've had the stuff of bad dreams on common phobias on your nails. I dare you to have them painted up for Christmas, not with robins, balls and candle, but rather with them depicting the Christmas story, the like of the star of Bethlehem, an old barn with a mum, dad and baby, they far out hippies on camel back, and so on. I'd love to see your idea of an angel too. I'm not challenging you Michele, more like a friendly nudge, (I hope that didn't sound wrong). The designs on your nails now are so very eye catching, and painted by a no nonsense talent. You did give mention of painting a tomato, I hope you had more success than me, I was just over half way through, and my better half give me a thick ear, cleaned the tomato, and promptly put it back in the fridge.... hehehe.... Life too short not to have a giggle or two every day. TTFN. Oh yeah, not just the nails caught my eye, the "frog" ring. It made me think of Neil Diamond and his song I am, I said. Hang on, I'm not done yet. Your top, what a great colour, and those wonderful leopard designs is great. Not everyone could ware a colour like that, but you carried it off really well.

Oh my! You shouldn’t be painting a real tomato. Instead, I propose you buy a toy tomato instead to paint on. That way, you can put it up on display and not have to worry about rotten tomato juice ruining your favorite books. It was a pain to clean up those books.

Ah, thanks Graham. A nice lady called Sophie does my nails, they last 3 weeks. She uses sort of stencil/stamps to make the designs. I make it hard for her because I have small hands and insist on keeping my nails dead short (martial arts training for the win).

Michele, is it possible to mix colors like chrome oxide or darker plums? They are so pretty but I can’t get them where I live and trying to ship them from UK or US or anywhere really would be very expensive.

A similar colour to chrome oxide could be made from Payne's Grey and Lemon, for Plums you want ultramarine and a scarlet red or madder.

I mixed up a color similar to Payne’s grey today and I believe I do have a good enough scarlet red and ultramarine, so I might be able to mix up those colors now. Also, I’m saying this here as I don’t know where else to share my excitement but I accidentally created a red undertoned black today while trying to make a purple and I am both surprised and over the moon as I feel like I could now mix up any color I want from my limited supply of paints. The only problem is that I forgot to write down the names and the amount of each color I mixed in, so I’ll have to experiment again.

Interesting about adding water to bring the brightness in saturated colors. It’s true, I’m still skittish about adding tonal contrast, especially shadows for 3D effect, so my pictures are not flat. I’m still worried, because once you add dark…..there it stays. As for the spiders….worry not….Your frog will swoop them off there…….no problem.
