@@InTheWoodyardBeing a west coaster , I can tell you most fallers don’t have a saw bar longer than 36 inches , mostly 32 . If your cutting a large tree you cut a window to get thru it , and a really big one like 12 or 14 feet a door . 372 is the preferred size , 395 for the big stuff , few guys own those monsters , too heavy to pack up a mountain and use it all day . 👍🇨🇦

Great content. I paid for my first home with a ms 290 a $500 pickup and a homemade log splitter. Those were a lot of long days and short nights sleeping like the dead. I sure am glad to see you put up this type of video. The youth of today do not seem to believe anything they did not see on KZbin. This video is a stellar example of well thought out education not just another regurgitation of a book. Had I had a computer or KZbin been around. I might not have had to work so hard. But then again I was hard headed and belonged on the struggle bus. Have a great day.

Marketplace always has lots of saws for sale where someone purchased them based off of bar size on the display shelf and the diameter of tree that fell over. The thought of cutting them from both sides never seems to cross their minds! When I head out to cut up a tree I almost always grab 3 saws. One each 50,60 and 70 cc combination has never failed to get the job done efficiently!👍
@InTheWoodyard9 ай бұрын
Yup, the 3 saw attack is a good offense! I like the 70cc saws the best.

True! An 18' bar will cut a 30" log. You just have to be smarter than the tree! lol. 2 additional reasons having multiple saws is a great plan: a) if the one saw dies, breaks, or refuses to start- you aren't dead in the water. b) WHEN you eventually get pinched but good, you have another saw to cut yourself out! An extra bar and chain is handy for this as well.

Very good explanation of saw sizes! I ran 70cc saws all along. Jonsered 2171 was the last one. I still have it. My chronic Lyme has pitted my spine to where a light saw was the only way I was going to keep going. I started with a Husqvarna 346XP with a narrow kerf 20" bar and chain. I cut alot of firewood for myself with it. Then the 550XP came out. I never really fell in love with it. The computer was never right. The dealer tried different things and we got it working as good as it was going to get. Then the 550XP Mark ll came out. I absolutely love that saw!! It has great enough power that I run the regular .325 chisel chain on a 20" bar. I cut around 12 cord a year for my house and shop. We have all our land cleared now so my logger buddy brings in semi loads so no cutting down trees anymore! There is a saw for everyone!! But like you said...need to have a sharp chain!! I just end up switching chains out and then sharpening the on an Oregon bench grinder. Works great for me!! Thanks again for a great video. take care!

It’s such an easy thing but so many people want the perfect answer before they buy something. Don’t wait, just get something based on good information and try it out. If it’s a good saw you’ll be able to resell it if you end up finding you like something else better for your work. Just buy something and use it!

I’m commenting before watching the video. This is like the hunting rifle can of worms lol. When I worked at a gun shop my “professional” advice for people not as versed was always the best rifle you could afford, the largest caliber you could handle (I’m in BC so the variety of animals and people budgets usually determined that would be one rifle and it was usually 30-06 people could handle) and don’t cheap out on optics, mounts and ammo. Most people will have practiced/familiarized with a 22. So in the case of saws I’d say people interested in them and cutting firewood will have used a stihl ms170 or a husqvarna 435. And if they are looking to dive deeper and be more efficient a pro grade 70cc range saw like a husky 372 or stihl 462 will be the 30-06 of saws. It has the ability to do lot of damage and accentuate bad habits but handled properly it can be an effective tool. The accessories correlation is buy good bars, chains, bar oil, mix oil and PPE

It has not been feeling sufficient for dealing with 18+ inch diameter oak, beech, hickory and tuliptree that seem to come down every year, so I searched here to see if I was being ridiculous. This convinced me to go with a 70cc saw, as I still have a few downed trees that I've been dreading dealing with. Each cut takes 2+ min with the 450 and I need to sharpen the chain with every bar oil refill. If you're interested, I can follow up with how the new saw compares.

I hardly use that except to back up the 346 and the occasional larger log it does have a bit more grunt. Then I added a 20v dewalt top handle. I use that for anything it’s big enough for. Being able to wield it like a ginsu knife makes it faster then its cut speed for limbing. I just picked up a 400c, have a high flow oiler on order and I think it will get a 25”, maybe 28” lightweight bar. Now I just need trees or a woodstove. I have cleaned up a few that fell in my yard, helped friends with the same and with firewood just because it’s fun.

Got 2 saws. Stihl because they're supported here. Husky makes great saws. Got a 261CM and a 462. Love the 261 as a general purpose saw. The 462 gets used for milling. With a 36" I can cut up to 31" wide. It works because the wood here isn't super hard. Outside of that i only use the 462 for trees/logs over 20" diameter because it's so much faster than cutting from sides with the 261. I would love to a smaller saw for limbing, especially so my wife can help with that. Another 261 or maybe a 361 for when a friend without a decent saw is helping. And a 661 or 881 for milling so i can go wider than the 462 will allow.

I use a 50cc saw for pretty much everything. I'm not in a hurry and like the lightness of the smaler saw. For the occasional bigger stuff I'll get a 70cc saw, simply because i cant justify the purchase of a bigger saw.

Good vid idea. I see a lot of people spending way to much $$$$ on way more saw than theyll ever need.
@InTheWoodyard9 ай бұрын
That is your opinion. I say bigger is better IF you can afford it AND handle it. Bigger saws cut faster saving time which is the most valuable thing we all have. TIME!
@lonnieholbert88989 ай бұрын
@InTheWoodyard I agree but in my world it's often straight dollars and cents. I'm ready to pose the question if it would be better for the occasional guy(or even rarely) to buy a lower cost saw and port it or a bigger up front saw.

Do you have a top handle saw? I have an echo cs 355t and I love it. It's so light and I can use it with 1 hand. It's 36 cc and I have a 12 inch bar on it. It's rated for up to 16 inch bar. I cut everything up to 10 inches with it. And I have an echo cs 620 pw for bigger things. I usually have a 20 inch bar on it but put on a 24 for bigger stuff. It's 60 cc and works well for me. I sell about 150 ricks a year.

Not a Husky fan but I have around 45-50 Stihl saws and the 660 is the biggest one I have, my buddy has the 880 and it’s pretty amazing. For bucking firewood, the 500 is probably the best one by far and u can see KZbinrs raving over it. The 261 is probably the best overall saw to have either power to weight ratio.
@iffykidmn81709 ай бұрын
And some KZbinrs are now showing that the 500i might have been a little over hyped, I do agree for a 50cc saw the 026/260/261 is still the benchmark saw.

@@sodhog6311 I have a tree business so we have many different saws for different occasions including the pole saws. Done can go months or even a season or two without use. Some are just the same size saws fur back ups or extra for larger jobs. Many were picked up at second hand stores after hurricanes or large storms when homeowners buy them and then sell them off.

I’m looking at getting a bigger saw I currently have a 16” echo with I use for trimming linbs around the house and cut a few tree on my hunting property. But I wanna get something a little more powerful but I’m kinda on a budget and. I’m not an expert I just need something to cut wood for my house and a few family members. I leaning towards a 20” 50cc echo priced around 370$ and a 24” 59cc echo 460$ my question is it worth the extra 100 buck for 9 more cc’s ?
