Hot Springs, Ar population is a little over 38,000. Trees are everywhere. Mostly Oak and many other hardwoods. Tree serv. guys bring me more wood than I can keep up with. I get $200 per face cord delivered. I get $10 for bundles. This area is mostly retirement people. I am also located within 5 miles of 2 very large campgrounds. 80 percent of people here have firepits. I have been selling wood all Summer. Last year I ran out of wood by Oct. This year is different because of the purchase of an Eastonmade Axis last year. I can turn out a tremendous of wood now. I will easily get my money back and much more this year. It's not easy work but approaching 70 I am probly in better shape than when I was fifty so there's that. I have saved untold hrs. of labor due to the tried and true tips from Chris. Thanks Chris.

I live in one of the biggest counties in Pennsylvania by land area, but our population is one of the lowest per square mile- 57,000ish. Because of a large timber industry and agricultural history Firewood is around $120 a full cord. Delivery is pretty much unheard of. Prices are going up slowly because kids of farmers are not becoming farmers.
@stevenbrown5210Ай бұрын
$120 a cord isn't worth your time. It should be triple that price

@@stevenbrown5210 it's what the market is locally, there is literally wood everywhere to be had- usually free to little cost because of the timber industry. Added to that farmers, loggers, and related workers don't pay someone else to do what they can do themselves

Really loved this discussion, Chris! You are so right that there are many variables regarding what to charge. I've experimented with a number of things over the years. I landed on self serve bundle sales. When I was doing deliveries, I began to consider what my time was worth on an hourly basis if I could spend that time doing my other job versus drive time plus fuel for wood delivery. That made it no-brainer for me, but I realize everyone's situation is different.👍

I tried doing firewood for a little while when I was out of work with a (good) chainsaw, maul, and truck. I am competing with those who have a firewood processor for $300 per cord, but locals trust them and dont know me so I have to make my price lower to $275 if I want to sell any wood. In the end I could only make $15-$20 per hour profit after gas and what not, not including truck maintenence but supply and demand is really sporadic, not high supply like your area. But I could make $27 per hour consistently in a construction job which is much easier on the body.

Watching at 9pm after a long firewood day. Unloaded pine at 6:30am that i split into My truck yesterday. Was splitting and cutting and stacking in the rain yesterday . Delivered apple over 1 hr away. Cut and split firewood the rest of the day 8 hrs til dark like every good weather day. Hoping for a long freezing cold winter with a small amount of snow. Never had the problem of having firewood thats seasoned 12-20 months old. So much carryover from 2023. Thought id have enough for a new dumptrailer already but with the worst sales ever in 2024 of the past 5 yrs that ain't gonna happen before fall. Saw that gas was nearly the same price as diesel. Id love for it to go back to under $2/gallon like it did under trump. Gas prices and inflation and repairs are killing any possible profit. Everyone has less $ in this ridiculous inflationary economy. Hoping this winter is really cold otherwise im gonna be screwed with having literally tons of firewood left over again instead of being sold and burned. Cant even sell any slabwood either and theres 50 cords of it piled up and we make more everyday

People always post on marketplace for free wood in my area too and if I can go get it I do. I tell everyone it is better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it. Now this does not just apply to wood. For example. I was hit with Hurricane Irma. That was bad I lost all my frozen and refrigerator food. I thought I was going to die with out my A/C. Did not have running water because I am on a well. I live in a 2 bedroom 2 bath and I could easily do good with 3 to 5000 watt Gen but I did the research on all the Gens and for a few dollars more I could buy a 10,000 watt gen. Would I need that much ? No never but its there if I do and if it is running less it will work smoother. Means less stress on the Gen. I have about 2 years of food stocked up so I could if I had to live on the food I have in my house with out ever having to go to the store for at least 2 years. Again better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. I have not one but two fire pits one I used for cooking and making coffee while I was dealing with Hurricane Irma. The other pit I use to burn just to hang around and have a few drinks . The best food ever cooked was food cooked on an open fire.

Some kinds of wood will "over dry" and burn up very fast, but it will burn, even after many years. The better wood kinds will last for a very very long time and be fine....oak, beach, elm, locust, ossage orange and some others will last for decades....IF it is kept dry. It is an organic material so eventually it all will degrade/decompose but it will last longer than most think.
