You keep saying that Mohanlal has done more comedies and big-budget films and less performance-oriented roles, which I think is unfair to his filmography. Just take a look at 1991; in addition to the comedy gold Kilukkam, other notable films that year were Abhimanyu, Bharatham, Vasthuhara, Ulladakkam, and a few others. You mentioned that he only did mass parts from 1995 to 2000; during that time, he acted in films like Iruvar, Vanaprastham, Kaalapani, Guru, Devadoothan.

People saying this hasn't really watched Mohanlal movies of 85-95 - and it's not necessary that performance oriented roles necessarily means very serious movies but even if you think that way 'Amritham Gamaya', 'Panchagni', ' Sadayam', 'Dasaratham', 'Kalippattam', 'Lal Salaam' , 'Sarvakalashala', 'Bharatham', 'Varavelppu', 'Unnikale oru kadha Parayam', 'Vaasthuhaara' - so many many movies...malayalam industry especially during that 85-95 period wasn't separated out into serious performance oriented movies and mass/comedy movies...it was all combined to what we used to call 'middle stream movies' - that used to be serious movies but told in a relatively entertainment fashion...

​@@a1221feb, that's wrong is what I am saying...first half of Dasaratham or Mithunam or 'Kalippattam' is full of comedy, that doesn't mean those were not serious movies or performance oriented movies...What I am saying is that the basic understanding to classify malayalam cinema those days into 'serious performance oriented movies', 'comedies' and 'mass movies' is entirely wrong because it wasn't like art house movies and mass movies in that era, it was mainly middle stream movies which meant serious cinema was disguised in a form that's entertaining with comedies, action and everything...Padmarajan, Bharathan,Sibi Malayil, Kamal, Sathyam Anthikkad and to an extent even Fazil and Priyadarshan were part of this (along with many others) and Mohanlal's bulk of cinemas in those days happened with these directors...So mentioning Priyadarshan's comedies and Shajo Kailas's action movies as a mark of majority movies of Mohanlal is obviously wrong....Again, I have great admiration about Mamootty especially for the roles he has done post 2000 but to say that Mamootty was mainly doing serious performance oriented roles compared to Mohanlal during those times is wrong...For every Thaniyavarthanam, there was Kireedam, for every Amaram, there were movies like Bharatham and for every Valsalyam, there was Pavithram...Yes, there were few pure art movie directors like Adoor, TV Chandran that hasn't used Mohanlal (but these movies are a very small percentage of Mamootty's career as well - Mathilukal, Vidheyan and Ponthan Mada - during that time as well)... The reason for parallel existence really was because Mamootty established a certain pattern of movies where he was best to play - a police officer/CBI (things like CBI diary Kuruppu, Avanazhi etc.), a family man (there was a dialogue those days - Mamooty, a suitcase and a kid was sure shot to success - he was the epitome father figure in an office going drama) and historical roles ('Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha' etc.)...I V Sasi who was a master of mass action movies (before Shaji Kailas's mass dialogue heavy movies) had given Mamootty the most movies and hit movies then like Samrajyam, New Delhi etc....His analysis seems to be based on limited knowledge and as someone who has lived through and watched most of the movies during those times (my school and college days), I had to write it off especially it's meant to educate audience from another state...I wouldn't have cared if this was meant at a Malayali audience as they will know most of this already...

Perspectives change, and what he mentioned about Priyadarshan movies is that the ones which gave Mohanlal a wider audience, and considered more apt for comedies which was not a card for the hero at that time.

You are wrong about a detail. Mani ratnam in his first film casted mohanlal as the hero when he was playing villain roles. The same mani ratnam was committed on mohanlal playing the mgr. It was for the role of karunanidhi that he first approached kamal Hassan, and then mammootty. Both of them denied since mohanlal was playing MGR
