I'm a INTJ and I have to say. That's really accurate, when I'm doing something I want to be 120% into it, and when someone takes me off, whatever the reason, the house is on fire or something, I tend to put my "ass face" and be agressive on automate because I just hate to drop off the thing I'm concentrated on. Also, working to be less agressive when that happens.

I rely way too much on inspiration to get me into a flow at work or making art, I feel like I can't force myself to make meaningfull work outside my head if I'm not in this state and it's not so great (thankfully I work where I have little distractions and can control my schedule, I fill uninspired or diffuse days with administrative/menial tasks that are still useful but not too demanding) - INFJ

Hi Lindsey. I am an INFJ and like you "Ni" is my savior function. You are absolutely correct because shifting focus is very hard for us compared to Sensory lead personalities. on the other hand, our focus can take us to heights and places that our sensory lead friends can never dream of and we can achieve a much deeper level of understanding of the topics that we choose to focus on. Thanks again for your valuable insights.

Ahhh so true. So... imagine being an INTJ staying home raising 4 young children... I had 4 kids all within 5.5 years. My oldest is now 9 and my youngest is now 3. “Overwhelmed” was a way of life for me for many years... I still get that way but it was all so hard for so many years and even still I’m constantly going in circles meeting “sensory” needs. It’s starting to get easier since we are pretty much out of the babyhood years but nowadays I get bombarded with a million conversations and questions :) It’s been THE ultra hardest challenge for me as an INTJ but I do think I am more well rounded for being challenged constantly all these years. Constantly trying to get space in my head. But what’s great is having my kids has forced me to evaluate and prioritize my passion projects hella hardcore. So at this point even though my kids and raising them and educating them takes so much out of me, any extra space I get has me crazy laser focused when I do finally get in the zone!!!

Yes, true. This is also a reason why I sometimes to think that some things that I need to think about are bigger challenges than they actually are in terms of thinking. It's just that process of firing up the engine. On the other hand, it's a great feeling not getting as easily blinded and misled to the big picture by the here and now as the sensory types. Also, I should read more Jung, Jung is great!

old intj here: i KNEW i would like this! this is my biggest gripe. i hate interruptions. my company moved us to an open office format, and i can't stand it. fortunately, i've been working from home for the last few months (as i have most of my career) and i'm in my glory! no loud bellowing coworkers, or cackling, or whatever. nice and calm now. the office is so overcrowded that i offered up my desk to work remote, and that looks like a green light going forward. another thing i noticed, is that i'm a unix bigot. i hate winbloze! part of that is that whether solaris, linux, android, mac osx, etc, i like to keep a lot of things open (browser windows & apps) as well as multiple desktops (which m$ sucks at), so i don't have to re-open a bunch of stuff or keep track of it. IT guys at places i work say that my workstation looks like i'm a mac user, which i am since solaris died.

It's so frustrating. I get so annoyed when someone interrupts my thinking process. I remember being a kid and picking up the phone when it ringed and couldn't just 'land the plane' and focus on the person on the phone. I'd just answer automatically like 'yes, sure, ok, bye' and then I wouldn't know what the person said lol Also at school a classmate would come up to me and try and talk and I would be soooooo slooooow to actually pay attention to what she/he was saying and I'd ask for him/her to repeat over and over until my brain could really process the information. And then having to go back to what I was studying... So much effort. I get so irritated when I have to change focus.

This is a great analogy. Landing the plane sucks and having it lift off again is worse. As somebody with huge energy issues I get drained after I am interrupted. Listening to this video and reading some comments I realized lifting off the plane again is so hard that I normally skip it and catch the next plane. The next idea or project -next plane. I have been struggling with finishing things and it is because of interruptions and the fuel it takes to go back to my original plane. I kept internalizing my difficulty with catching my own plane. I related it to procrastination, scatterbrain, no energy, emotional upset or I would just distract myself. So glad I realized this and can put a stop to the internalizing. Also I have found great help in making myself rules, contracts and shorthand of my ideas to jumpstart liftoff. Writing to yourself with introverted intuition is amazing because you know yourself and what you need to hear. I don’t think it is a makeshift cache but a focus point with a kind of guidelines from yourself.

Great analogy! It takes a lot of effort to get that thing back in the air. I'm imagining the pilot going over the checklist all over again. Weather, fuel, checking the body for any problems, reporting to air traffic control, etc. Meanwhile the other person has already hopped back into their sedan and hit the road.

I have tried to explain my concepts to a few people while in the plain. The looks on their faces. My partner always tells me I talk in circles when I try to explain something. I have a hard time remembering my concept when I land the plain. The connections kind of disappear. So they are either going to get a rambling of connections or nothing at all. I do agree, being pulled away from forming a project that requires a lot of thought is kind of jarring.

Great analogy of landing a plane. Very much my experience. Lately I've been trying to conceptualize the sensory of an NI user during high stress. Fight/flight/freeze. I've found I can become hyper aware and present of real time sensory. But there's a unique twist on it for intjs I've found. Almost like NI becomes streamlined for the immediate danger. Usually fight/flight relies on muscle memory, but I've found NI to still be available in dangerous situations but in a different way. Anyways great video again LiJo

That's a great analogy for something I told my boss yesterday. That when someone calls be out of the blue asking for details on an assignment, I will clam up and get completely confused, stuttering, etc. But if they give me forewarning they want to discuss something, that's better. I can review my notes have my information available, and actually have a clear and concise discussion. I just can't readjust that fast.

I don’t mind starting from scratch; starting from the rubble. So long as I created the rubble. “This place I was taking the plane to? I don’t want to go there anymore. Also, I don’t think this is the plane to take me there.” Straps the plane with C4, straps self with parachute, sets timer, jumps, and hears explosion. Finds new, better plane, sets new, more worthy destination, and starts over. AS LONG AS I’M THE ONE DECIDING WHEN TO START FROM SCRATCH.

Heck yeah. It also may explain why if I'm waiting for something - a delivery, an appointment, a date - I cannot do any work involving much thought because I can't face the drag-down and the slog-back, can't focus strongly enough. I also notice that I'm resisting restarting a couple of important projects because the slog up to that airplane-height is too much. Making notes does help - if only to make me feel the slog isn't so far.

Thanks for the video, your discussion is spot on! I am an INTJ too, and English is not my first language. Spanish is my first language. Something about Spanish is that to express an idea it often requires more words to say something than to say it in English. I´ve noticed that I think in English because it is more efficient. When “the plane lands” I have to switch to Spanish to communicate with people around me… it takes extra effort to do it and sometimes (jajaja) my Spanish is weird because of it.

I told an Se friend that I hit a wall (my Se wall) and that I needed help on manual projects that I could do but right now, I don't want to (because my head's working on that aloft server). He asked me what to do about an aggressive neighbor messing up his community (likely a narc ENTJ on the HOA). I explained my overhead view, where it's probably headed and how he might cog that abusive wheel. And so we bartered a deal. This point in human evolution is no easy place but when we put our limited cognitive heads together, we can really get things done.

Another analogy is the dichotomy of quantum, and basic computing. A basic computer will give an instant answer based in logic (sensory). Tell it what to do, step by step, and it easily, correctly accomplishes the tasks. A quantum computer, which needs nesting in a basic computer, does 'something', but fluctuates into a paradox to create something 'new', quickly. The human mind is amazing.

I call it been in the buzz, it's awesome and you can see it in your mind as if you are there, with color and everything, you can manipulate the pieces even if they don't have a form and you get to *SEE* the pattern like it was nothing...Until someone call you on the phone, or irl, come over and tell you how his/her ride was or whatever. Then, you get to have difficulty replacing the pieces correctly to get back at where you were, just to get interrupted again by random. Yup, INTJ

To me, the plane is beyond my control. I can't control it. I'm just a passenger. It takes off when I'm alone, and I spend more time on that plane than I do consciously observing reality. Only when others interrupt me, or if I tunnel-vision focus on something, like a video game, can I keep the plane down. If not, the plane takes off as soon as it can. That's what makes conscious tasks so overwhelming for me. The more I keep the plane low, the harder it gets to keep it from taking off. That's why I even space-off when I'm doing mundane tasks such as washing the dishes. And that's also why I space-off when I wander in nature. I can't keep the plane low, to observe my surroundings. I still remember the time when I was conscripted and joined the Finnish military. It was one of the worst experiences of my life, because my plane was kept low, unable to take off, throughout the 6 months I spent there. I was a level 1 Se rookie surrounded by level 100 sensor bosses, and I had to engage as a level 1 Se rookie, doing the same stuff as all the bosses around me, who complained and ran their mouths that I couldn't do things at their speed or accuracy.

I know exactly what you mean. When I'm at work and building a system (I'm a systems engineer), I find it really, really, REALLY annoying when people interrupt me asking me for something stupid. Particularly, it annoys me if it's something I've already told them before or taken care of. For example, people asking me to look up something on the system that is working just fine. I'm trying to be better about it, but the constant interruptions make it impossible to function.

Yes absolutely. Sensors are very out of sight, out of mind. Where intuitives constantly have so many things running in the background. My husband likes to walk around saying to me every few minutes, "Hello!" That's a new thing he started when we started sheltering in together. Before Covid-19 he used to go to work and I could continue on "accessing my server" in the mornings. So true! I know the feeling well of "the plan engine cooling down" I think (at least for me) there's a comforting feeling when you're going about your day using your Ni function. It's like everything in the sensory is like white noise and your train of thought is so loud and so vivid when you're focused. (Like the ground is blurred spots of color and the plane engine is so loud and the servers are working and connecting and sending signals.) And when that train of thought is interrupted by a sudden sensory thing I.e. you were walking and you tripped over something and now you have to deal with the gash in your foot. Not only is it frustrating to go and deal with that sensory, but it was jarring as you fell from the plane.

I like to think of it like a coal-fired power plant vs. a nuclear power plant. A coal-fired plant can be built and running within 2 years. You can keep pushing in tons of fuel, and it makes power. Plant issues can be rapidly fixed minimizing downtimes. A nuclear plant will be up in 10 years, but it only uses minimal fuel, efficiently making lots of power. Plant issues take time to methodically fix with the utmost safety. Long-term, nuclear plants will be more profitable. Short-term coal plants are more profitable. However, they both have a role in our infrastructure.

Really good analogy but I have learned that it's more productive for me to explain concepts like this to friends if I completely sidestep anything pertaining to "measurements" in the explanation. For example, I wouldn't have any issues using your cache analogy to my techie-geeky friends but for my non techie-geeky friends using the airplane analogy has a good chance of causing misunderstandings because seemingly many people would suggest that I am saying that their topics of conversations were "beneath me.". ***sigh*** I do enjoy my quiet corner without interruptions....

Nicely done - this is a great way of explaining this phenomena. I would just add that this can be overcome. After years of practice I learned to grab bits of my last thought as a placeholder, engage the disruption with the vast majority of my attention and then return to the plane ... a sort of autopilot.

Hmmmm..... Pretty good analogy Lindsay! I do the things you recommended here already but this is a way to explain why especially in group conversations I experience a sort of latency between what is being discussed in the moment and then the struggle to keep up which is not to be confused with being slow or simple minded. It's usually just because my mind is somewhere else and then accessing the information on the server does take a bit of time as you said. The memory process is clearly foggy for me atleast and in my mind I have these nodes of interconnected information which require the synapses of my brain to fire off in multiple different directions so that I can source the accurate information. One could put it in very technical terms with feedback loops, closed and open, cache's and so on but it may not be neccesary since you seem to describe it already pretty well. It is certainly interesting how our minds have these cognitive loops of gathering and processing, but in different ways! Cool, cool, and as usual 'tahnk joo!' for the content.

@@InternetLiJo By the way, are you at all interested in bio tech or neuroscience? I find it fascinating to ponder all the possibilities for human potential of we could enhance or increase our cognitive capacities. A transhumanist can dream of maybe expanding the limit of our awareness as well as our consciousness with a greater understanding of the human mind? I found a channel with another INTJ sharing his own thoughts om this but he is pretty jaded and pissed of at the state of the world, wishing he could become a completely self-sufficient entity one day. He may be pissed, not hold an opinion you agree with neccesarily but it's just him sharing his thoughts on the human condition and back to my original question for you; do you think human beings will reach a state of being fully actualized? A complete master of one's own mind without being in a cognitive loop? Ok, long comment and you got shit to do but I would appreciate any comment from your perspective.

Looks like she's falling asleep. Is this video really that boring to produce? LOL The content was otherwise interesting though. This is SO TRUE! It takes SO MUCH EFFORT to come back to reality. I hate it. LOL As an INTJ who works in information technology, the way I refer to it is RAM vs HARD drive. Sensors are accessing RAM memory while we are having to access the hard drive. And it's true that we try to keep it humming in the background when there are short interruptions so we can easily get right back to what we were doing. I think this is why many of us Ni doms are night owls. That's the only time when the world will leave us the hell alone.

INFJs can be impulsive. But, at least in theory, clumsier and less practical than INTJs. I envy those who have functional Te. For me, introverted thinking is like a never-ending need to understand, which leaves no time for anything else. It is an asocial function, especially developed one.

I think that the airplane is actually the right hemisphere of our brain. Our conciousness exist in our left hemisphere, and because of that we are unaware of the right hemisphere. But there is a connection between the two hemisphere allowing the right hemisphere to give insights and visions and the left to help refine the predictions that the right makes. Look up on split brain patients.

I have to limit my time in the clouds or airplane. I have to force myself to engage in sensory. Well true except in nature. Then I can do both. I think thats because I am grounded in nature. In civilization there are far to many distractions. Im either in the clouds or not. The more distractions the more i find myself heading to the clouds. Could be ADD but I really don't think so. Im just focused on whatever my mind thinks is important. That could mean not paying attention to what you think I should be. If you intentionality break into my process and interrupt it does anger me. Not always but has a far greater chance of it.

Seriously, It's like I live in my own personal Matrix, and I have to be forcefully yanked out of it to deal with every little mundane thing, like have I seen your keys? Now you have to tell me about what this character on a show I don't watch just did. Now you need help rearranging YOUR furniture for the third time this week because you refuse to spend a few minutes visualizing the most efficient layout for your office before you start shuffling stuff around. Handle your shiz and leave me be! I hate essentially being slapped awake out of a vivid dream every time you have some asinine question.
