Exploring Abandoned Mines and Unusual Places

Күн бұрын

The Constitution Mine. Such a formal, important name for an abandoned mine. Nonetheless, Paul, Chuck, Justin, and I headed to this remote, abandoned mine to explore and document it. We entered two portals that both led to extensive workings and large stopes under the mountain. Deep in the mine, we all ascended one ladder system to an enormous upper stope and spent quite a while exploring every nook and cranny of it. A highlight of this trip was finding an old log cabin at the mine with a collapsed roof. We estimate the log cabin to be around a 100 years old!

Thanks, Doug! Sometimes we will explore far enough into the mine to find the connecting shaft or tunnel that opens to the outside. And some mines just have multiple openings that we can see as we approach the mine from afar. But often, though, we don't find the source of the airflow.

I forgot that you and I were the only ones that went in that second adit. I actually thought that one was more interesting than the first one too (although the Crooked Canyon Mine that we visited earlier in the day was my favorite), but it was cool when all of us went up into that stope. That's something we would never be able to do in the wet mines in our normal area of exploration. Ha, it must have been tough editing out the majority of the bad language from Chuck and me.

Exploring Abandoned Mines please respond have you ever gotten concerningly lost in a mine
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 8 жыл бұрын
No. Believe it or not, nearly all of these mines are simply one way in and one way out. It would be really difficult to get lost in them. There have been a few mines, though, that do have multiple levels with miles of tunnels. Those kind of mines would be easy to get lost in if one did not keep track of the turns that one took. The Rachel Lincoln Mine video that I posted a couple years ago is one such mine. Supposedly that mine has 12 levels with miles of tunnels. When I was in that mine for the second time, we passed so many branching tunnels that would require careful record-keeping in order not to get lost.

+Garry Stebbings Hey, Garry! Thanks for your comment! We weren't sure exactly what that log cabin was for. It seemed pretty small, so one of us thought maybe it might have been a place to store explosives. I'm not sure about that, though. Right near the log cabin were other foundations where other buildings had stood at one time, so it may have been a residence after all.

Hey Frank what kind of safety information do you send to a contact back home before entering a mine. Apart from location, do you give an estimated time you'll be back by etc (maybe not since you don't know how long an exploration may take...)?. Cheers, Tim
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 8 жыл бұрын
I personally no longer send my coordinates to contacts back home and haven't done so in over a year now. I still carry my own SPOT beacon but have it reserved for emergency uses only such as breaking a leg while hiking, getting bitten by a snake while hiking, or my car breaking down in the middle of nowhere, etc.. Other people that I'm exploring with do have their own SPOT beacons or other messaging devices, and they will usually send out the appropriate information to whomever they want on their own end. Keep in mind, the SPOT beacon does not allow for any other info to be sent except GPS coordinates. There would be no way to send a message via a SPOT beacon with information regarding estimated exploring times and things of that nature.

That was my favourite vid and i’ve watched at least fifty of your explores I have a question since this one had such massive stopes, and that is, how exactly did the miners make these stoped areas? Did they blast above them (the tunnel) and eventually build some kind of scaffold system to load dynamite into the the ever increasing height of the stope or were they formed from blasting the floor deeper and deeper?
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! From what I have been able to learn, the miners worked their way upward in the stopes. That’s why in some vertical stopes you can still see the platforms in place that they stood on while working. Whenever they would reach the surface of the ground and break through into daylight, that kind of stope is called an “open stope.” Some stopes are more short and horizontal than high and vertical. In those stopes, I believe they used dynamite to blast away large areas of rock, and then they would haul the rock out. They would often leave large pillars of rock behind to support the ceiling. They call that method of mining the “room-and-pillar” method. You can find examples of all of these stopes in my videos, for the most part. Thanks for your question and comment!

*Depends on what part of the world is doing the mining. Advanced mining is mostly done with mechanized drills, muckers and ANFO these days. Some larger mines employ conveyor belts, haul trucks and excavators.

+Billyt I believe they blasted the rock with dynamite and then shoveled the ore down into the ore chutes which fed into the ore carts. Some stopes were worked by hand, though.

How the hell did the miners get the ore out of the top of those massive stopes? Seems the only way is to work from the top down or use huge ladders and scaffolding
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 8 жыл бұрын
+James Over Yonder That is what those ore chutes were used for that I showed in the video. The one I showed in the video was totally empty which is pretty rare. Normally they are filled with rubble that clogs the chute.

I've noticed a lot of these mines have dead end alcoves at the entrance. What is the purpose of these I wonder?
@AbandonedMines11

Maybe to store the miners' helmets and lights? Seems like that would be the most logical explanation.

Some consider us brave; others consider us foolish. I consider what we do extremely important so that these historic, abandoned mines are preserved on video and in photographs for posterity before they are naturally eroded shut or deliberately sealed by government authorities.

It's amazing some of the stuff we find underground! Thanks again for your support.

Really enjoy your work! Question: Why don't you guys "rope up" and provide belay protection while one of you explores ladders and such? Not being critical just curious. Again great work!!
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 8 жыл бұрын
+Chuck Cummins Great suggestion! However, we very seldom go up or down ladders in mines. The ladder we ascended in this mine was the first ladder I have been on since early July. We spent a lot of time looking at the ladder and how it was attached and how sturdy the rungs were before we actually climbed it. Most ladders we come across are just too rickety or not trustworthy to risk the climb.

Thanks for the quick reply. Would you be more willing as a team to go deeper (vertically) into the mines if you had rope protection? I'm taking my first mine exploring trip next month to Nevada. I have been studying and understand the risks. Will be very careful. Would love to join your team sometime! I'm an airline pilot and spent a great deal of time climbing the big walls of Yosemite. Would enjoy showing you guys rope climbing and you show me how to explore mines safely! Keep up the good work. Your channel is one of the few I subscribe to.

+Chuck Cummins Thanks, Chuck! Let me know what mines you visit while you're in Nevada on your upcoming trip. Learning proper rope technique would be a good idea. I already own all the requisite gear - harness, the ascender, carabiners, foot loop, 200 foot of quality climbing rope, etc. I've only used it a few times several years ago.

I'm going to head at first to the Austin, NV area. Bringing some gear to look for gold/silver also. If we rapelled down deeper would there be more chances to find more old mine stuff? Thanks for taking the time to respond. This is fascinating to watch and learn.
