I recently found your site on KZbin. I was the geologist and chief assistant to Mr H. B.Long, developer and president of Harpers Ferry Cavern. Mr Long also owned Skyline Caverns and Shenandoah Caverns. In the early 1980's I worked with him in the development of Natural Bridge Caverns. As I see their is interest in the history of the property perhaps I will contribute to any information you or other might like.

Sir is there any way you could tell me if the reason this cave really closed is because it was deemed unsafe or were there other reasons like financial issues?

Have you gone to John Brown's cave down on the river tracks by the river? From Harpers ferry you follow the river tracks up the river till you find the cave it's got a steel plate 10 ft high 10 ft wide in front of it. You have to squeeze behind the plate to enter the cave. This cave went on for miles and had open rooms bigger than houses.

How do I find this spot? I’ve been to Harpers Ferry probably 200 times and I’ve never heard of this. Can you drive up it or is it gated off?

I went to these caverns twice in elementary school (2nd grade) but unfortunately there were no cell phones then so I did not get pictures but remember Harpers Ferry Caverns were mesmerizing.

I NEVER Knew any of this was there! It was obviously deemed unsafe because of falling rock and that's why they closed it. Sad that the whole place closed. Good choice of music.☺️

I have been told that there is an underwater lake or aquifer in the caverns but it’s a long ways down. I knew about these…. I am from the area… my parents went there when it was open and told me about them. My father told me about them and other caves and caverns in the area because as a teen, he did spelunking. If my memory serves me correctly… two things caused the campsite and the caverns to close… a cave in and a lawsuit between the co-owners of the campsite. From the little research online I found, it was connected with the owners of Shenandoah Caverns and Luray Caverns in Virginia

I’d love to know how deep. You can go further but you have to crawl

The caverns closed due to the campground going bankrupt. This didn't involve Shenandoah Caverns or Luray Caverns. Those are owned by other companies .

From HF take rt.340 towards Charles Town. Going down a steep grade, AllstadtsHill, take a right on Bakerton Rd. Approx a mile in, on the left at the National Park area for the 1862 Capture of HF.. You can see the road going over the hill to thnse Caverns. If you get to the RR Underpass, you've went too far.

All real caves are in limestone. Anything else is a rock shelter or a hole that doesn't go very far. Over millions of years, water dissolves the limestone making caves. Karst baby, karst.
