Another brilliant game and commentary Mr. King. :) I was completely shocked by black's move at 3:16. Ne4? I thought e4 was forced to dismantle white's center quickly, even at the cost of a pawn. Ok I have a blitz/rapid mentality but in the long-run, leaving white's pawn chain like that is scary. P.S. Rxc6 is quite obvious, maybe calculating till the end is hard but that's the first move you see in the position to allow Qd8+.

Blimey my tactical eye spotted the rook takes knight leading to checkmate straight away....mind you I would not have got into that position in the first place...I am only a lowly 2000 rated player. PowerPlay to 100k!

Great video as always GM King. Do you have any plans to publish the Anti-Sicilian course in book format? I have both of your Chessable courses on the Kalashnikov and the anti-Sicilian (both are fantastic by the way) and I also have your book on the Kalashnikov in hardback format. I would love to see the Anti-Sicilian course in book format as well. Fingers crossed 🤞 Keep up the great work!

Yes, I intend to write a physical book version of the Anti-Sicilians. But it is going to take me some time to change format.

Nice game, not out of place in a book on chess strategy, with its examples of the consequences of light and dark square weaknesses. I thought Rxc6 was fairly easy to see as it removes the defender of d8. By the way, I have noticed that on some channels, when they want to increase the subscriptions, they simply encourage people to tell their friends about the channel. Maybe that would just nudge it up!

Interesting game. I guess Pono really wanted to play something difficult in the opening. Seems like that decision kind of came back to haunt him in the end.

Rxc6 becomes rather attractive after seeing that Qd8 loses the queen to Nxd8 (only defence), instead of checkmating ;)

Devastating bind on the dark squares! If Carlsen had White's position, he would have played like six tidying-up moves, then proceeded to win. Korobov was in more of a hurry, but it all worked out for him.

Me, a patzer, saw Rxc6 at once, and surely many of you did too. Pono didn´t see it at all. Very strange! Not long ago Magnus missed an easy mate in 3. As Finegold says, very suspicious :).
@LateCloser
@LateCloser Жыл бұрын
It's "obvious" when you're looking at the position(with no pressure or time consequences) and someone has told you there's a winning move. It's a completely different thing when you're looking many moves ahead and you have to consider a move that normally would be clearly losing, but in this circumstance is clearly winning. Pono and Magnus missed the "easy" wins probably because they were looking at much more complicated scenarios in their heads. Oh, and get this, they're human. Sometimes humans make inexplicable mistakes. I have yet to meet one who doesn't.
@djgresearch
@djgresearch Жыл бұрын
Even Magnus can miss an easy mate in 3 when having to play instantly. The Rxc6 miss I find more surprising, but I assume Pono was short of time too. It can happen though even if you're not short of time. Strange choice of word by Finegold - I wonder what he meant. However, I do think so much Rapid and Blitz has distorted the game somewhat. It's hard to imagine the "greats" of chess missing those moves when playing 40 moves in 2 and a half hours.

Pono threw the game. More than once. Was he exhausted, or distracted? According to Wikipedia, it seems he may be Ukrainian, while his opponent is certainly of Russian extraction.

They are both Ukrainian. What appalling accusations - without providing any evidence.
@wizardatmath
@wizardatmath Жыл бұрын
@@PowerPlayChess I pointed to the evidence. And I qualified it, by saying that it was from Wikipedia. And what is apalling about suggesting that war might have an effect on pono's concentration? Do you believe his decisions were anything of the caliber he showed in the match you reviewed a few days before? Clearly he was not the same man.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess Жыл бұрын
@@wizardatmath You said Ponomariov 'threw the game' without providing any evidence. Some players just have bad days. Korobov is a proud Ukrainian and has represented his country on many occasions. I have met him personally on several occasions - he is not only a very strong chess player, but a very decent person.
@wizardatmath
@wizardatmath Жыл бұрын
@@PowerPlayChess well I certainly didn't suggest anything about either player's character. I don't know them at all. But I do know Pono made at least two very odd moves, which even little old me could see were losing. Certainly, he didn't play like the fellow that maneuvered those horses so well, in the earlier game. Whether both are proud Uukrainians, proud Russians, or split, was merely my way of explaining those errors.
I blew my only "chance" against GM Anton Korobov...
