A Soviet cosmonaut is stranded in space.
INTO THE SILENT SEA is used with permission from Andrej Landin. Learn more at andrejlandin.com.
In the midst of the Cold War in the 1960s, a cosmonaut named Alexander orbits in space, adrift around the earth in his space capsule. He has lost all navigation and communication systems, and he will soon lose his life-support systems.
Alexander soon discovers an Italian radio frequency where a Sicilian radio engineer named Alvaro is working the night shift. The two men form an intense bond as they work through the night and Alexander reckons with the journey that led to the space capsule in the first place.
But as Alexander drifts away, the newfound friendship between the men may not last the night, and help Alexander find his way home.
Writer-director Andrej Landin takes a meditative, thoughtful tone in his sci-fi short about the mythic "lost cosmonauts" that were a supposed casualty of the so-called "space race" between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to be the first to send a human in space.
The story has the plot points and development of a thriller, with its elements of space travel and potential disaster. But the beautifully considered craftsmanship and pacing are steady, introspective and measured, with an emphasis on emotional resonance. The images have an elegiac power, full of natural beauty, light and texture, emphasizing just how rich life on earth can be.
Alexander's memories of his training -- and a particular love affair with a fellow trainee named Tanya -- suffuse the film throughout via flashbacks, bathed in the golden hues of warmth and contentment. It can be hard for shorts to integrate flashbacks into the storytelling, but these memories form the sociopolitical context of the story, as well as the emotional core of the film -- and give viewers a palpable sense of loss once we realize just what Alexander is losing as he floats in space.
Through the understated dialogue and the equally subtle, resonant performances that bring it to life, Alexander's bond with Alvaro forms his final, last attachment -- one that helps him come to terms with his fate, appreciate the richness of the life he has to leave behind and find meaning in the sacrifice that he made before he left earth.
INTO THE SILENT SEA falls into a rich tradition of sci-fi films that use the vacuum of space and the unthinkable breadth of the cosmos as rich metaphors for the human condition, in all its ultimate helplessness and solitude. It takes its time to tell its story and develop its characters, but the result is a moving, emotionally immersive cinematic experience that tells an unusually full and complete story, with an ending that is bittersweet in its wisdom. As Alexander says, "We live as we dream... alone." But we do carry the richness of memories and love within us, providing some comfort in our final journeys.

I believe the story is loosely based on the events of Soyuz 1, launched in February, 1967. The sole cosmonaut on that mission, Vladimir Komarov, was killed as a result of a failed parachute on re-entry. It was the first known fatality that occured during an actual space mission. The flight was riddled with problems as the mission was rushed by the Soviets to keep up with the Americans. Komarov reportedly felt he would not return alive but went on the mission anyway, as the backup cosmonaut for Soyuz 1 was Yuri Gagarin, Komarov's close friend as well as the first man in space and a national hero.

There was another case, that the soviets are still denying, where the italians overheard communications from a soviet satellite, where a woman was recorded saying: "Мне жарка, мне жарка" (I'm hot, I'm hot) suggesting that she burned in space.

@@joewood3546 the claim is a bit weak because there's no a 2nd or a 3rd source that heard similar broadcast. Is suspicious because the claim come from 1 odd source despite we knowing that such orbiting spacecraft will broadcast across the world.

There is a very good Russian Movie about this. The story revolves around the actities of the scientists who worked to bring about the illfated flight, but also depicts the tragic loss of life in the lab when a fire erupted in a pressure chamber, killing inside.

@@joewood3546 There are no Soviets in 2020 . They lost power in 1990. but having spent time there and understanding a little about the Soviet union, which was full of secrets and Intrigue (much like the COVID-19 scientists...) there is every chance the Italians did indeed hear the final words of a cosmonaut. In recent decades China also had rocketry disasters which have been covered up,such as when a rocket fell over on the launch pad and went horizontal, wiping a whole village in the process. Only a tiny news article was ever released about it. totalitarianism is all about control and if you tell all ,you lose control .

Fun fact, the first woman to go to space was Valentina Tereshkova, as a part of the Soviet Cosmonaut program. The Soviets wanted to have a woman because some people in America were looking into if woman could withstand the physical strain of spaceflight, and they were proposing that the woman who had passed the tests be part of the astronaut program, since they had gone through all the nessecary tests and were already pilots. The Soviets wanted to do it first, so enroled a woman into their Cosmonaut program. The proposal to have the woman join the astronaut program wasn't taken, so even after the Soviets got the first woman into space, the Americans didn't have a female astronaut for a long time.

Though what do we really know about the truth of the Western fight to put people into space and in the end for all of it , was it really worth it? When now ,we humans have cluttered up space with junk, commercialised it for profit and now we have the American president claiming mining rights to the moon! It is an innate part of people who are true explorers at heart, to wonder what is beyond the next horizon and to find a way to travel to each far horizon, no matter what the personal cost may be. The first known person to conquer Mt. Everest, Edmund HIllary summed it up very well when he was asked why he went through so much personal sacrifice to get the summit, and he answered "Because it's there." Hundreds of thousands of years ago, the first human beings left Africa to migrate across the planet, they dared to cross wide rivers, large lakes, vast oceans, if they had never bothered to wonder what was beyond their horizons, and found ways to travel to reach each succeeding far horizon, expanding the reach of human beings throughout every habitable region of the Earth, our species would've most likely become extinct long ago. Species that stagnate and stay put in one pace for too long, seem to go extinct much faster than species that are mobile. One example is the Dodo bird, it stayed in one island and never seemed to have bothered to migrate to other places, and they became extinct when hungry sailors would make land fall to resupply their food stores.

The mission had a chance for success. It simply had a higher chance for failure. The one that makes a leap of faith also carries the burden of their faith not being enough to survive the leap. A beautiful and well formed tangle of many lives, all heading to an almost uncaring finale. Great video.

Romance history what the brothers Achille and Giambattista Judica Cordiglia who from Turin (ITALY), thanks to their radio station, intercepted between the end of the 50s and the beginning of the 60s, or rather they picked up the signals from the first "bip "of Sputnik on the fly by Jury Gagarin. But between these 2 missions they heard gasps and requests for help from other missing cosmonauts and never confirmed by the USSR.

This is a wonderful film, told with such honesty, the direction outstanding, beautifully performed by everyone. This beats so many other space odysseys with much bigger budgets. Thank you!

I'll fly a starship Across the Universe divide And when I reach the other side I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can Perhaps I may become a highwayman again Or I may simply be a single drop of rain But I will remain And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again. - Highwayman
