I did not record this. It was filmed on April 13th, 2002 - believed to be the first preview. Features the Broadway Revival cast including Vanessa Williams, Laura Benanti, John McMartin, Stephen DeRosa, Kerry O'Malley, Gregg Edelman, Christopher Sieber, Molly Ephraim and Adam Wylie.
Show ends at 2:26:02
Unfortunately the sound problem is not a KZbin conversion error, it drops out in the original video I have. If anyone has any links to a bootleg with the complete audio please let me know! Sorry!
All I ask is that after watching this bootleg, if you haven't already, PLEASE purchase the cast recording! It's the least you could do. The album is available on iTunes and Amazon (which ships worldwide) so there's no excuse. Here are some links:

Musical theatre needs your support.
Thank you and enjoy!

@@nostalgik._ Laura Benanti has always been a big favorite of mine and what a voice! I don't like how the director staged the stepsisters--completely bland & no reaction whatsoever when Cinderella fits the shoe. I know the stepmother is Pamela Myers. I don't know how long the show ran but Pamela left & was replaced by the original stepmother Joy Franz from 1987. Enough has been said about Jack's Mother--dreadful. Who plays Cinderella's mother? Is that Laura Benanti as well?....Overall, seemed way too early to produce a new Broadway production when the original show had only closed around 1989 or so. I agree compared to the Broadway and London productions, this one really does come off as amateurish.

I realize what a truly great job Danielle Ferland did in the original production by watching the Little Red in this version. Generally, this production did not rely on the comic timing of the actors to get laughs like the original did. At first I thought it was terrific that they had a moving, seemingly alive Milky White, but it ended up being a gimmick to get laughs-- a gimmick that distracted from the words. And Jack's Mother can't sing a note.

I was lucky enough to see this production. I confess that I had a hard time letting go of the indelible impression left by the original Broadway cast, which got in the way of being able to enjoy the performances. For instance, I hated Jack’s mother. But watching it now, I think she’s hilarious. Same with Vanessa Williams, who was much more down to earth in this role than the imperious diva that I had hoped for. The special effect of Cinderella’s mother in the tree was spectacular. It loses a lot in this home video recording. Still, it’s great that this is here!

She's awful. She can't even keep up with the music. She has no idea how Sondheim music works - and this music is tricky. I'm kind of flabbergasted she gave a Broadway performance, because she's not really up to it. While it's great to see some new faces and new people being given a shot (in 2002), it also bears stating that if you're on Broadway, you and better be up to the task.

I suppose they were trying to go for the whole "older woman" Broadway actress that doesn't have the best voice but she can't even hit the notes, she has to bring them down an octave and her bad timing is hurting me so badly because I know it so well.

I love the human milky white and a lot of the other changes I don't mind, but the witch doesn't have a lot of humor that she needs for this role. Jacks mother too. Little red riding hood seems to just be saying most of her lines without any emotion. I do like the 3 little pigs, but the second wolf kinda takes away from the meaning of the song. I like what the steward did with his charecter, and most of the other actors like the baker and his wife, jack and cinderella were great. It's just these few performances that dont seem invested. The witch doesn't need to sound good when shes singing the lament she should sound in pain not trying to be on key.

This Milky White is very distracting. It moves clumsily, and the audience laughs during parts that are not supposed to be funny. Also, the narrator coming out holding the birds on a stick and flapping his other arm like a bird is silly. It distracts from what Cinderella is saying to the birds because the audience guffaws, too.

1:31:00 Rapunzel tells the Witch: "You just locked me in a tower without company all my life." In the original libretto and Broadway production she said: "You just locked me in a tower without company for fourteen years," Why the change? Did they think keeping Rapunzel at 14-years-old somehow promoted child brides? This was the reason why Disney didn't mention Jasmine's age in ALADDIN. Originally, the law stated she had to be married to a prince before her her 16th birthday, but after the company received flack from parents for clearly stating Ariel's age of sixteen in THE LITTLE MERMAID (who gets married by movie's end), they simply stated that Jasmine had to be married before her next birthday.
@special_effect6123
@special_effect6123 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they do this in all the current productions. Because if Rapunzel were 14, the Baker would have to be 15 according to the Witch's story as would his wife, probably. Obviously, the original is best, but they fixed a serious hole in the story.

Special_Effect I know in the original fairy tale of Rapunzel the witch didn't lock her in the tower until she was around 11 or 12. It was when the witch realized how beautiful Rapunzel was that she locked her in the tower so no one would take her away since she view Rapunzel as her daughter.

ben shafer Yeah, I think that's what they might've been going for, but the witch specifically said, "Oh don't take away the baby!, they shrieked and screeched, but I did and I hide her where she'll never be reached," when talking about how she took Rapunzel from her parents, and most people don't refer to their child that's definitely over two their "baby". So it does sound weird because, just like Special_Effect, that would make her 14 and the Baker 15.

by far the best revival! none of the others seem to get humour quite right. granted this one still is a bit different w comedy, but that’s a given. also, is jack that the kid from gilmore girls that was terrified of paris?? i remember they kept making jokes about him getting his break on broadway. lolol i’m gonna look that up! edit: IT IS HIM! that’s hilarious!

while i thank god for this recording, someone commented on a video of the 1982 tony awards where jennifer holiday sang And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, and they said, and I quote: “This is a great song, such a shame it was filmed on a calculator.” and I really concur with that statement here 😅

Some minor things were changed here and there. The most noticeable is the wolf coats changed from blue to tan and they lost the hats. I have to rewatch to listen to see what was changed from the book. Act II has some dialogue differences from the original production.

Hoping to get the scenes featuring Baker's Wife singing "The end justifies the beans!" and the scene with Baker Sr. that included "No More." Both were cut from the film---and OMG, how could they???? Such poignant, character-defining moments; without "no More," the appearance onscreen of the dad feels like Cliff's Notes and really isn't worth it---the Baker *could* have his epiphany all but himself with the Dad/Mysterious Man cut out. I can't believe either Lapine or Sondheim didn't put his foot down and say "enough." Maybe I'll just amble over to Metacritic or Rottem Tomatoes and write a review.

minissa2009 I had other issues with the film, even though I mostly loved it, but I stand by the decision to cut "No More" as wonderful as it is on film the pace would slow to a crawl with so many ballads back to back

minissa2009 Besides cutting for time, they wanted to make her a sympathetic lead, a lovely young woman who only wanted a child. they softened her considerably. The original made her almost mannish in how she spoke,, and handled issues, and she had no qualms with stepping on other people''s heads to get what she wanted. That would never fly for a Disney protagonist, so they cut those particular songs out, and made little character adjustments to her through out the script.

I'm rewatching the Bernadette Peters cast and, much as I'd kill to play the role, the Baker's Wife really is one of the more morally ambiguous characters in the play. The Baker at least gets a reason (in the play) for some of his attitudes and behaviors. I like them played a little older (as in play) because I'm not sure it rings true having a younger couple desperate enough to use magic---although I guess alternatives like IVF were limited in Fairyland!

minissa2009 Not to mention they're leaving out the reprise of "Agony" and the fate of Rapunzel. Although the film did have some lovely visuals, and what was left of the score is beautiful, the less said of Depp's appearance of the Wolf, which would have been fine on stage but out of place in this film, the better.

Cutting ' No More' is something I will never forgive. It is the entire point of the Bakers story, his moral, and drives home one of the biggest messages of the show. I literally made audible noises of disgust in the theater when I realized it was cut completely. Why? They played the entire song in the underscore while he was just rolling around crying. It was bazaar and so anti climatic. And it boiled the Baker down to a whiney, throw away character. I actually had friends of mine who didnt know anything about the show ask why he was even in it because his character was so dull and seemed to have no point, which is just... Heartbreaking, really. I promptly showed them the original to remedy that.
