This is amazing. I love the moment where she's mesmerized by Rapunzel's singing then notices her gnarled claw of a hand, and it snaps her back to reality. Her performance is full of little touches like that. Really wonderful.

Thank you so much for posting this! I didn't know that the full recording of Phylica Rashad from this show existed! Actually I was always so confused why Rashad never wore the same post-transformation Witch costume that Bernadette Peters wore.

She had such a whimsical quality to her portrayal that I’ve always loved! On stage in anything she’s ever done she is so incredibly regal - as always more treasures from you! Thank you for posting Spiderwoman!

Thank you for putting this on, what a pity that "Children will listen" is not included in the reel tough. I have to say that i prefer her a lot over Bernadette, she is almost the only one's i've heard that gives different qualities to the old and young witch's voice

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the cast I saw in the Summer of '88. I was disappointed to learn that Ms Peters would be leaving the show before I could get to NYC to see it, but Ms Rashad was superb in the role. I had hoped there might be footage of her somewhere. What a gift!

I wish I had seen her in the original production. I always felt --- and still do ---that Bernadette Peters' performance was the weak link in the original show. Her performance was too showy. Phylicia Rashad gets into the character of the Witch, which Peters did not. The best in this role (for me) is Cleo Laine, who nailed everything about the role and sang it beautifully, as well.

@@audramcdonaldapologist3676 How so? Phylicia Rashad really got into the role just as great as Bernadette Peters' did. Just because Bernadette was the original Witch for this musical doesn't necessarily mean the others didn't do as great.

I think both of them are superb. Each of them has their own unique way of portraying the witch, which I love.

Is there a full version of this? Looks like this was either a press release or it was like the Rob Evans Jekyll and Hyde rehearsal video. I wonder if they filmed the entire show with her in it.

I got this as is--I didn't remove or edit anything. I assume this was to be used for press footage for Rashad, and it does include almost all of her numbers.

Looks like Edmund Lyndeck (original Turpin from Sweeney) is playing the Narrator/Mysterious Man.

I like of how she's already wearing the purple Act Two dress when she transforms. I mean I like the white one but she's wearing it when she's old and in the Peters one after the transformation she's wearing it in the end of Act One.

So they amped up Bernadette Peters’s make up for the witch for the Professional recording. I remember seeing production photos and thinking to myself that the witch looks nothing like she did in the filmed version. Now, seeing Felicia Rashad as the witch it all makes sense.

Yes, Bernadette's makeup was substantially altered for the TV proshot.

Well, some of what's preserved here can also be seen on the pro-shot, commercially available video. But I thought some might be interested in seeing most of the original cast in a different, earlier performance. At this time the show had only been running for about five months.
