I truly believe this song is underrated. Gorgeous performance from both actors.

It's underrated? Ugh who is doing the rating haha. It's one of the most important songs. Altho I think the acting here is sort of amateurish.

I read that, given that his own father left him and his mom at a very young age, Sondheim expressed his grief in this song. He said it brings him to tears when he hears it. How powerful this performance. Bravo!
@tommytran88803 жыл бұрын
I find that really fascinating. Such a traumatic thing, and instead of sulking and resenting him, he writes a song from his father’s perspective, exploring what could’ve made him leave his family. And then he writes in the ending he wished for, where his father changes his mind and finds the courage to comes back.

I think it’s also possible that Sondheim gave himself the clever, understanding mother he might have always wanted in the Baker’s Wife, a woman who really could have it all, but still dies. I’ve never related to anything no more.

Musically wonderful, this song is emotionally raw. In its context it dares to broach a often overlooked subject, the father son relationship.

Honestly it's a little overwrought here to get me emotional. I need that subtlety from the original, and then the tears flow. I start shedding one tear all the way toward the beginning at kzbin.info/www/bejne/haCQpoqKgZV-n68m25s

I’m working on this as the father in class/workshop. The multiple levels and genius of craft in the lyrics that’s revealed as you study the details is just mind-blowing. And the tune is deceptively simple, but so poignant, it’s hard to do it without crying. Truly some of his very best work.

The baker has good singing voice but tbh his acting is kinda bad. It"s just not believable as he has that resting jerk face. Better cast him as the prince

Gotta say, this costume does not suit Astin. He looks weirdly…hunky? in it. Chip Zein’s small stature was perfect for this costume in the original show, but in order for Astin to embody the everyman quality of the baker, he should be swallowed up by the costume. But the costume, especially the hat which weirdly accentuates his jawline, make him look like a buff guy pretending to be meek but failing miserably.
@johnpedone99094 жыл бұрын
The song is perfect. Absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately the actors hands are such a distraction that he looks like he’s cheerleading. He just needs to let the song do the work, he doesn’t have to move so much. I found his performance quite distracting. If you watch the original Broadway scene, the actor barely moves his arms throughout the whole song and it is much more powerful. When you sing Sondheim, he does the work for you.
@joed1803 жыл бұрын
Yes the acting is obvious and overwrought. Like, guys just watch the original and imitate them if you can't make good choices on your own. To be fair, it's LA, so...
@danielunderwood52173 жыл бұрын
Excessive use if hand gestures is certainly distracting. Puddles pity party is a good example of someone who goes overboard on a few of his songs. For this scene, I love the gestures, especially the fathers when he says "running away, let's do it". Acting/performing can be done with minimal, few, moderate, or excessive gestures. People in the audience in turn, have a preference for minimal, few, mod, or excessive gestures. If you preference is for minimal, moderate will seem excessive, and vice versa. It is impossible to fit the preference of every member of the audience. It's one of the beautiful things about theater, one performance or cast to the next can slightly change both the character in the story, and the way the viewer interprets the story.

Nothing honest in this performance at all. Quite disappointing. It's. A shame a song that has the ability to evoke emotion from the singer and for the audience is wasted with over-dramatization and over singing.
