To be fair, Hannah, the wolf singing about Red in a manner that makes you think of sexual predators is actually quite appropriate. The story of "Little Red Riding Hood" was originally intended to teach young women the virtue of not getting into intimate relationships with men just because they are charming. The final line of the Brother's Grimm version even described that the wolf "ate" her (very much an innuendo).

Also, 'Your Fault' isn't a comedy song. It's very much written in Sondheim's signature style of fast-paced, back and forth singing, but it's serious. These people are trying to shift the blame instead of accepting that they're ALL at fault, and that's why it leads into the Witch's part, where she eventually disappears after criticizing them all. Just because it's in a fast-paced style doesn't mean it's cartoony.

In case nobody else has said it, the cutting of toes and the heels of Cinderella’s stepsisters and then the blinding by the birds, is actually part of the French fairy tale. I actually think the entire cast with one exception was fantastic, and even James Corden was good. Lilla Crawford for me as RRH and is my fave, I think she’s so talented for a child performer. Daniel Huttlestone, too. Anna and Meryl are perfect as always and Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen one-upping each other in ‘Agony’ gives me goosebumps while I’m laughing.

these arent necessarily the "true" versions either; iirc these were the brothers grim versions which were ultimately edited by all of two dudes with their own cultural biases. the oldest cinderella we can trace is an grecian slave girl who loses her shoe and marries the egyptian king who finds it. i grew up with a book series of folktales from around the world and looked further into them recently. in vietnamese cinderella (known as tam and cam) the wicked stepmom and stepsister kill tam horribly over three incarnations (telling her to climb a tree then cutting it down so she falls to her death, killing the bird she was reincarnated as and eating it, cutting the tree she was reincarnated as to make a loom and then burning it). she gets her revenge by coming back as a ghost and marrying the king anyway and also boiling cam alive and feeding her remains to her mother who dies of shock, but yeah.

My issue is they removed some of the best elements from the broadway musical when they made this. 1- The narrators death 2- rapunzel whole arch and her twins 3- The second version of agony where the princess complain they can't be with their new loves because they're married.
@pippin19919 ай бұрын

Absolutely. I love the reprise of agony so much. Also they cut one of my favorite and most under appreciated songs from the show "No More" the Baker's lament song after his wife dies that is a diet with the narrator (his father). It's a simple but beautiful painful and great acting potential song.
@coatimundi694 ай бұрын
@@artistpino this is literally my favorite musical (rivaled only by Cats, weirdly) and it makes me SO sad that they cut No More. its absolutely the best song and between No More and Children Will Listen, its half of the entire theme of the musical. without it the importance of family and the many ways a child can be damaged by their upbringing is lost! also, no more is the resolution of the baker & dad story. i feel like the baker telling jack "fathers make mistakes" is a little dampened when that resolution isn't there.

In case no one explained to you what happened with the Witch at the end: She starts throwing beans around to make her point, but the reason she was cursed in the first place was that she lost her mother's magic beans. So after she throws the beans, she sings, "Alright mother when, lost the beans again, punish me the way you did then" so she's being cursed again for losing the beans a second time. I actually had to watch the original show a few times before I fully understood that.

My favorite ting about "Into The Woods" is that they had the original story details. like before Disney changed them. Jacks mum dying. The step sisters cutting off their toes/heels and they birds making them blind. The witch blinding Rapunzels' prince. They did go with the Brothers Grimm version of little red riding hood, where the wolf eats them and they get cut out. Butter then the modern version where grandma is in the closet. But the real original ends after the wolf eating them.

YES! He's so great and I personally love Les Mis, I don't get most ppl's biggest critiques at all, I think in a movie adaptation in comparison to the broadway version it is to be expected that you'll have actors who can sing rather than singers who can act and if the vocals sometimes aren't as perfect due to it being very emotional and in character then that's totally fine bc that's what the medium was going for, and I think the cast delivered on that aspect exceptionally. Hey Hannah!! I think it’s important for you to know that the kid who plays Jack is also Gavroche in the Les Miserables movie!!! He has such a great voice for a young kid like you said! You should totally check it out, he was only about a year younger in Les Mis than he was here. It was a much smaller part though.

I personally love this, yeah it's creepy and weird in some parts not gonna deny that but you just can't say no to some good Sondheim and then with that cast? Yes pls. Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep are awesome in this as always and I especially appreciated your praise for Emily Blunt bc this was actually her first time ever doing anything with singing involved and she absolutely killed it (I think not even her husband John knew beforehand that she could sing that well lol). And the gruesome parts of the Cinderella story etc actually weren't surprising to me at all since I'm German and that'l literally how the original version of those fairytales goes, they're A LOT darker than you'd expect but I've known them like this since childhood and it's always interesting to me when I see that some people forget about it or aren't even aware that the sort of disneyfied versions aren't what the original fairytales are like at all xD

I have to remind myself a lot that I have a much longer attention span than a lot of people because I love 3 to 4 hour musicals and movies. My roommate on the other hand has to pause Into the Woods like 3 or 4 times to get through it because she just has a shorter attention span and gets fatigued watching it. So something that is perfect for you and I could be wayyyyy to long for other people. I watch 5 hour documentaries for fun so my gauge of the "perfect length" is much longer than most. A single peice of media can't cater to everyone's preferences and that is okay. :)

Actually the original Broadway recording is practically the same length as Hamilton and many other musicals 2 and a half hours isn't that long tbh

I was surprised by how much I loved this movie. It's a fun, crazy Rollercoaster. It's also the first movie with James Corden in it that I've LOVED. It's not because of him. But everyone else SLAYS and he managed to be competent enough as a scene partner that it didn't seem too out of place. This isn't hate towards him or anything. He just isn't my cup of ☕️.
@pizzarat688 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. The movie is incredible inspite of him is how I think about it lol. I find his performances to be just... fine. But it is fine enough that it doesn't distract from the plot and the other incredible actors much. Could you image if it was a Broadway singer/actor playing the Baker though? It would make the movie even better than it already is especially since he also does the narration, which was a choice...

Into the woods was my first ever musical and only acting role back in 7th grade (I played little red's grandma and one of the step sisters) and I think our milky white was a blow up cow on a string and if I'm remembering correctly it got stuck in the curtains when Jack was running off stage and someone had to kick it back stage. I've never been much of a singer either so I was very happy having grandma who only had spoke lines. I only do tech now.
