Yusuke's wake is the one scene from an anime that can consistently draw tears out of me. Keiko's breakdown, followed by Kuwabara's outburst, then Mr. Takanaka's words. Then topped off with the boys mother bowing to Yusuke's mom and then the boys innocent comments about playing with Yusuke later. Just gut punch after gut punch.

Dude, I’m glad someone said it. This anime consistently makes me cry first episode and last episode. The fact that they didn’t change intro songs during a long anime and they allowed the main character to be free from obligations and enjoy his life, topped off by playing the intro song instead of the outro to give a happy little “sandwich”. Best anime of all time accounting for “inflation” lol

It is such an amazing scene. It gets me as well, mainly because on my second watch I was going through a really rough time in my life and felt like Yusuke when it came to his death. But seeing all the different people who truly miss him. It honestly saved my life. I'm sad to say I still need to go back to this episode for some help now and then. But the rest of the anime is such an amazing ride and so much fun!

Fun fact. : in some countries they kinda censored part of the story by changing Yusuke's mother and saying she was his older sister. Mostly because she was a teenage mom and looked like a deadbeat who spent her days smoking, drinking ad not caring much about anything.

It's kind of important that Yusuke isn't choosing to return because people love him, but because they'll be sad without him. It's a subtle difference, but it says something about his connection to others. He doesn't want much from other people, but he does want them to be happy. The makings of a pretty good protagonist.

When i was in my teens (im 32 now btw) a friend of mine recommended this anime to me because i was troubled teenager but Yusuke in the beginning of this reminded me so much of myself, like, the pure bullying life delievered onto me from people using my name to get their way or teachers with the views & points on who essentially i was that was being masked by everyones gaslighting or even my relatives & family tree that was so toxic and view pointed it seemed unreal until religion came to my feet. It almost was like i was reading my whole life story through fictional characters & events and it broadened my intellect for certain situations. I hope you guys continue the series fr. Its amazing.

I have watched yu yu hakusho from start to finish at least a dozen times, the first episode always gets me to cry, every time, oh my the voice acting in the english dub is something to always admire, the feelings they get you to feel, I think the most amazing part is that as soon as botan breaks the tension with her just eagerness to continue I find myself laughing, every time as well, this is partly why this is in my top 5 all-time anime

Even most people who prefer the sub would probably recommend the dub for this one. The character voices are just so fitting and the witty dialogue of yusuke is unmatched from the original script. The person who did the script writing also did the voice acting for yusuke.

While this series is more battle and it was quite popular with its tournament arc and how that arc was done, there is one thing that some people, me included, forgot from time to time. This series is not about fighting to save the world, fight for justice, or vengeance. At its core, it was a coming-of-age story where characters explored themselves and sought out what they want to be. The series is more personal and up-close to the characters and less about the world as a whole. Just young men trying to find their ways.

If there's one thing I always say about the first episode of yuyu it's that it set the stakes for the rest of the show very well. You see exactly what Yusuke is fighting for and it's extremely effective. 10/10 ep.1 for any anime. Imho

Though the start may be a bit slow you will really like the unique stuff that will happen later on.
