Part of The Shear Zone Channel. Rob visits the islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote to explore the fabulous volcanic geology and landscapes -including parts of the Teide and Timanfaya national parks. We can use this surface geology to look at the tectonic evolution of the Canarian archipelago - manifestations of a long-lived mantle plume.

Brilliant, as always. Teide is fascinating. There’s a fumarole on the summit, and one to the west of the summit a few hundred metres away. What’s also fascinating is the impact Teide has on climate; to the south, arid. To the north, it’s much more Lucius, and more like Hawaii’

Yes indeed. Also Gran Canaria... Dramatic climatic variations (well, rainfall anyway) on small islands....

That was excellent. I already wondered why Lanzarote is still so active after so much time after its initial formation. Its 1730-136 eruption is far larger than anything in the Canaries for the last couple of milennia.

Well - an interesting question - but the eruption side is only part of the story. Most magma that is produced stays in the crust...

Thank you for such great and informative geology videos. Could you make one or more videos on how to draw various contacts in a geological map after field observation?

It's coming - waiting to get back up to the NW Highlands to do some more videos on basic field techniques ....

Great video, Rob, as usual. Now I want to book my next flight to the Canaries! There is a small typo in the name of the island west of Tenerife, which is La Gomera (with M instead of N). Cheers!

No - it's offline - awaiting retooling... (which needs funding).
