As the former IT Manager for the USS Hornet Sea, Air, & Space museum (CV-12/CVS-12), it is great to see this tour and also interesting to see how DIFFERENT the Intrepid is from the Hornet. The extra exhibition space is great for museum guests, but it so limits the actual capacity of the hanger decks. You guys should come to Alameda once the Pandemic restrictions are lifted. USS Hornet was/is the carrier that recovered the Splashdowns of Apollo 11 and Apollo 12. Joe Bob says check it out. Plus they have the actual airframe that recovered the first astronaut who did an EVA (by Ed White), oddly repainted to mirror Navy Helo 66

We've been down to the Midway in Sam Diego, but haven't visited the Hornet. Half the battle is getting in touch with the right people... email us at kerbalspaceacademy@gmail.com if you know who we should reach out to!

Emails from this end are already flying. I will ping you on your gmail once I have the contacts.... thank you for replying. Hornet is the MOST AMAZING and best preserved Essex class carrier that remains, she is the last of her kind and I think your audience would LOVE the visit. Thanks again!

The weight of a space vessel needed the strength and hydraulic power of the B&A (Boat and Aircraft) crane attached to the L3 elevator (starboard) platform. USS Hornets B&A crane is still is working production to this day. As are L1 and L2... the only Essex Class carriers, I believe, that have that much working mechanisms. Come Visit!!!! USS Hornet also has ACTUAL Apollo and Gemini test capsules.. not recreations, not to shade Intrepid, they ROCK, but if you want to see actual history. Go West Young Man!! :)

OMG, you really need to come to the USS Hornet.... They have destroyed that ship..... it took me far too long to far too long to realize the "pop-up planetarium" is the access to the fantail and the steps you took were to the aft flight deck that appeared to come up to the island superstructure. No one (without å Naval history) would have any idea what the actual warship looked like. So sad to see an Essex carrier so gutted.
