I used an intrepid as my first 4x5, it’s a fine camera. I had zero issues using it and had no trouble before I upgraded. I now use a sinar which is a monorail that can do it all, but all the pictures are just the same.

Thanks for a great series of helpful videos Tim. Another major difference between the two is the Intrepid has a Graflok back which is important if you want to use traditional roll film backs like a 6x9 or a 6x12 Horseman roll film back. I have the Intrepid MK3 and a beautiful Toko cherry wood 4x5 that I much prefer over the Intrepid but it doesn't have the Graflok back. The Toko was a side project by Nagoaka back in 1986 and I much prefer the shooting experience of it over the Intrepid but when I want to shoot color roll film, like now in the Fall with all the changing leaves, I'm forced to bring the Intrepid just for the Graflok back. I think I'm eventually going to get one of the 4x5 Graflok project backs from 20th Century Camera and build a new back for the Toko and get rid of the Intrepid entirely. Until then the Calumet C2 6x7 slide-in roll film back is always an option on the Toko since it just slides in like a regular film holder.

Thank you for making this I just purchase a nagaoka

Thanks for this. Both are too flimsy for me. The Intrepid is for students on a shoestring budget. But that's fine because it allows an inexpensive access to 4x5 work, which is good for everyone: It keeps the 4x5 film industry healthy. 👌 For me though, I prefer the rigidity of the Linhof Technika. Models IV and V can be had for not much more than the Nagaoka, and have 50cm extension and precise movements. I don't mind the weight, because I'm only 73 so I can hike with a 10kg camera back pack without issues. 😁

'Great comparison of these two cameras. I don't have access to the Nagaoke, but I have two of the Intrepids, MK(1) and the MK3. I am a member of the Wichita Wildlight Photographic Society of Lawton, OK. Most of the members of the club today are shooting digital as I do, but I am old school trained in film. I plan on teaching some classes using film cameras, 35mm up to large format. I have your SP-445 processing system which will be used in these classes for the large format processing. Thank you for your insights on both cameras and the confirmation that I made a good purchase with the Intrepids.

Thanks for the comparison. I have a Wista 45DX, which is probably very similar to your Nagaoka. Am happy with it although some of the gears are stiff and a bit jerky on my particular camera (which is however beautiful). A pricing issue is currency exchange rates; Canadian dollars are weak vs euros or pounds so the Intrepid new is not such a great price for me.

I have been using the Intrepid MKII since 2017 and I found it a joy to use. The only limitation that I found was with a double focus lens 150/265 the 265 is at the limit of the bellows for infinity focusing and I have had to make an extension board to give me an extra 20mm of travel. I believe the newer bellows have the 300mm plus travel. Intrepid make great cameras, so much so that I ordered the 8X10 in early January and I am expecting it any day. Do not get me wrong I love old cameras and have a collection including Rollieflex, Hasselblad and Nikon that I use regularly, but for LF The Intrepid is a real workhorse..

Interesting review. The metal bed on the mIV must have sold a lot of issues too. I see you got a wireless mic but something seems to be catching some ambient noise.

Hello what lens board fits nagoka ??

I think it's known as the Linhof Technika.

Hi what do you use to level the nagaoka?
@timklein18518 күн бұрын
Most of my tripods have a bubble level and I eyeball it from there.

Thanks for the review, you did not mention weight, the intrepid weighs 1.2 kilos which is nothing and very nice if you are hiking all day. BTW not sure about this model buy IV has rear movements
@timklein1852 жыл бұрын
Weight is basically the same at 1.2Kg.
@ericvm42812 жыл бұрын
@@timklein185 no it isn't. How can it weight the same if it has extra things like a strap and brass components?
@timklein1852 жыл бұрын
@@ericvm4281 I just put it on a scale, it weighs 1.2 Kg. Look at the photos (especially the side views)! The Nagaoka is a much more "petite" design. It is a finely crafted hardwood box vs a chunk of plywood. In addtion, the difference between brass and aluminum is negligible (given the amount used). The strap is too light to worry about.
