Love this. My maternal grandmother knit, my mom knit. She got an award for 500 knitted knockers. I lost her a couple of years ago, and we had the luxury of not having to deal with her things until now. My mom would have been interested in knitting machines but would have never been comfortable with the cost. Me, I can't stand knitting. I just can't sit and do that until i get fast enough to finish anything. Long story short, we gave most of her supplies and books to her knitting group, and I am comfortable with that. But I can see the appeal of a yarn collection that with not knitting or crocheting, i can't justify. But knitting machines that is something i am going to investigate after i retire. The circular sock machines are very interesting. Until then your channel will help me feed that inner child. I am also getting back into sewing which my mom also taught me and i am having so much fun with.

The C position was a thing up until least the kh800, and I have not worked out why it was useful in the machines older than that. In older machines it would be treated with the same settings as B position needles, but it was specifically the point you could push needles to from holding position to get them to knit no matter the cam lever settings. The thing is that doing anything other than knitting B would make them drop off, and they tended to not have 2 colour knitting settings, so there was no reason have them at C as opposed to transferring them back to B to slip or tuck correctly, or having them at D which would knit normally with the levers set at I or II. However, in the kh800, they were treated like D position needles, meaning that they could be used for patterning while holding stitches. The automatic patterning brought the stitches out to D position, but no lever setting could hold just E position needles, so the D needles would be brought back to C to knit in pattern while holding the other stitches. It was lost to time because they worked out that they could just make C and D the same thing (D spans the space C once held as well as the old D position) and hold just E for partial knitting purposes. It was not useful without 2 colour because it would drop off when patterning, and with 2 colour it was only useless because patterning was brought out to D which couldn't be knit independently from E. They just kept it called D because that was understood to be the position needles are pushed out to when patterning, and it was less confusing to people used to the older ones. This is entirely superfluous knowledge for the purpose of actually using any machine missing the C label, its just interesting to know why it skips over C instead of relabeling them

Thank you for making this intro video. It makes me so happy! I went through EVERY SINGLE ISSUE with my Brother 950! The despair you feel when the knitting falls off the machine. THUD. It’s all part of the learning process!

Hi I am located in Austria (where the Alps are not the Kangaroo's) I bought my first machine after getting one of your video's recommended in youtube. I even bought a second one now that I know what I want.

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial to an intro to a knitting machine!! Your helpful tricks and tips are invaluable to learning this skill. Not much info about any machine out there. You are a very good teacher. Your friend is lucky to have you available for problems. I know exactly why Rachel doesn’t like making swatches! I’m a hand knitter and crocheter and I never make gauge swatches or do much blocking. It just delays getting started on your project and we are just wanting get going. Patience is important and I can see where swatches are also as a potential time saver overall! I look forward to more videos as she or others learn from you!!

Thank you, both! Was very entertaining. Good encouraging teaching. Rachel did well and seems to have the confidence to persevere. Too bad the machine didn't have the clamping brackets!

I've been wanting a knitting machine but have been too intimidated to try to learn all of the different types and then try to find one and get it going. I'm glad I found your videos, they're helping me learn about machines bit by bit so hopefully when I'm ready to buy one, I feel much more confident

I thought it was this video. I can’t find it now- I’m trying to find needles for my 890 and 850r. I’m also scanning your channel for deep cleaning- do you have any of those videos? This poor machine needs it! My knitting room smells 😅 thanks for all of your videos!!

Thank you for the video. I love watching you because you are so straightforward. I did not see you cinder the tension on the mat for your yarn unless i missed it. Also i think it is Hoppe's gun oil is highly recommended for knitting machines. 1

I bought an sk280 last week thanks to your videos. I was lucky enough to pick up an almost brand new machine with ribber for the price of the machine alone. This video would have been so useful when I spent 2 hours trying to cast on 😂 Do you have any recommendations for yarn suppliers in the Midwest?

I'm curious about the rumor that the sponge bar was added to create the need to service the machine regularly. What mechanism could they use instead that would last longer? If someone were designing a new knitting machine and wanted to make it the best machine possible, what would they do instead?

I could really use a video on how to cast off edges the have waste yarn attached to them. on other projects I tried just pulling it out and ended up with a bunch of live stitches unraveling!!

You can use Lily White. I do it all the time. Gun oil too.

First thing to look is the needle bed, bumps and damages to the carriage, which means it could have fallen and something is broken inside. The sponge bar has to be replaced most of the times, but this one is NOT in good shape, looks like it's home made, it won't hold the needles down with correct pressure and evenly across. Vaseline oil is the only one that can replace the original because it won't cause damages to the plastic parts

the latch should be open when you put the needle in. Also needles should be in perfect shape, they're inexpensive, just replace it if it's bent before having bigger issues. There's quite a few mechanichal knowledge missing in this video, which is a pity because I really appreciate your effort enthusiasm, and humor

It's great that you show how to set up the machine, but it's quite annoying that you so often show yourself instead of showing what you're doing. The camera should be on the knitting machine and not on your faces!!!
