Took my professor 2hr to explain this topic and NO ONE could not understand a word of what he said while it took you like 5min to teach this and now I can solve all the problems he gave us. You're a lifesaver so thank you. Universities should understand having a PHD in math does not make you a good professor, being able to teach is completely different from having the knowledge. If the probabilty of being an alcoholic as male is 2.25%, then that answers the question? If a doctor walks in and sees a male patient, she knows the chance of him being an alcoholic is 2.25%. What am i missing here? Or is the question: "What is the probability of a doctor seeing a patient who IS a male AND an alcoholic"?

I think what makes these problems tricky is mistaking the statements "probability of A and B both occurring" and "probability that A will happen given B". It's important to understand that these are not the same, in this case that they are not both 2.25% probability. Thanks for the helpful video!

I don't understand this formula, if P(A n B) = P(A) * P(B), shouldnt the conditional probability formula P(A n B) / P(B) just equal P(A) (cancel out the P(B)'s) ? Is this just for when you don't know P(A)?

Can someone help me with this example? If you start with the assumption that the probability of being an alcoholic is: p(A(male)) + p(A(notMale)) / p(male) + p(notMale) and then you assume that you are a male, so the whole not male goes away: p(A(male)) / p(male) we have the formula in the video.... but when we then consider what p(A(male)) means: 2.25% of all male... so we divide again by the number of males.. isn't that kind of self referential in this example?

Hi! In the numerator, why do we look at the probability of A and B rather than just the probability of A? I think about it this way: the probability of A given B should be the total probability of A occurring relative to the total possibility of B occurring. This is wrong, though. Why do we think about it in terms of the formula as: the probability of A and B occurring relative to that?
