Worksheet: worksheets.joechem.io/workshee...
Worksheet Solution: worksheets.joechem.io/workshee...
Worksheet Solution Walkthrough: joechem.io/videos/wksht-soln-...
Study Guide: (To be created, but Joe's working on it!)
In this video, we talk about the concept of Conjugation--how to identify it, why its a stabilizing force, and much more. In addition, we talk about the allylic position, and how conjugation helps in stabilizing charges when they occur at an allylic position (hint, our friend resonance is back :) ).

Joe, you are absolutely underrated. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Huston for Ochem 1, and although she recommended your videos, I didn't watch them. It wasn't until now, when I am taking Ochem 2 with Dr. Bandik, that I understand why you were recommended (again). I didn't realize you also went to Pitt! I'm not sure who you had when you were taking Ochem, but the material should be more or less the same. I deeply regret not watching your videos when I was in ochem 1 because this video was a huge help, and I figured it would've helped me then. I am excited to learn more from your videos! If any of my friends have trouble with these classes, I'll direct them to your channel

Very nicely explained! I just have one small doubt. In the butadiene structure at 3:00, I understand that the p-orbitals of C1 & C2 carbon atoms are aligned with each other which makes the pie bond between them possible. But how can we be sure that the p-orbitals of C2 & C3 carbon atoms are also aligned with each other & not at right angles to each other?

thank you so much! i love this channel! quick question though. Are those charged carbons in the vinyl position? i thought vinyl would mean its 1 away right?
@jOeCHEM
@jOeCHEM 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Nader! So great question, because using vinyl can honestly be can tricky. So allylic is the term you're looking for whenever you're referring to the carbon NEXT DOOR to a carbon that is part of a double bond (think the sp3 carbon in propene -- checkout 7:21 in the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKPZY32tateoiaM). Vinyl on the other hand refers to the collective group of both carbons IN THE DOUBLE BOND ITSELF when you have a ethylene substituent (aka when you have a branch that consists of 2 carbons and they are double bonded to one another). The allylic carbon is a position, where vinyl describes a group. Check this link out www.chem.ucla.edu/~harding/IGOC/V/vinyl_group.html I think it does a good job illustrating a vinyl group. Let me know if this makes sense or doesn't make sense! And thanks for watching :)

Why the stability is directly proportional to no.of.resonance structures
@jOeCHEM
@jOeCHEM 3 жыл бұрын
More resonance means that charge is distributed over a larger network of atoms, which is a stabilizing effect. It's always easier to lift a couch with more and more people vs just by yourself, so more resonance structure = more overall stability for that overall resonance hybrid. Does that make sense?
