@@Thadnill hi, i am a multi-genre producer. Love to work with cinematic, edm, trap, metal, rock, hiphop, and indian classical genres. i dont prefer cubase before ableton at all... as ableton has helped more with my work flow speed. I am finishing more projects on ableton. But i started on cubase 5 so i do have respect for that DAW. As i got another copy free with my zoom recorder so i thought of going back to it and giving it a try. Well all i can say is cubase has really improved since version 5. And i am really enjoying the workflow and interface.

@@echoesandnoise Interesting to hear! When comparing Cubase 10.5 Pro and Ableton Live 10, which one would you recommend for a multi genre producer to get? side note, I have heard that Cubase 11 comes soon, so that will be even more interesting to see how they improved the 10.5 pro.

I have Halion Sonic SE version 1 that came as standard with Elements 6 and Artist 7, there are certainly at a few perfectly usable sounds in the Basic library including realistic saxophones, I do now have Halion 6 which I got on a 50% discount through Steinberg email and it also comes with the full version of Halion Sonic 3. One thing I do like about version 3 is the fact you can filter all your sounds by library specification which you can't do in version 1, I always like to use all the libraries in a more balanced way as they are all part of your purchase. When I was using SE version 1 I used the Basic library the most and used things like Artist more for guitars, pianos and strings. If version 1 let you filter your sounds by library I probably would have used the other libraries more and my older projects wouldn't have suffered of "all sounding the same".

Nice video, but there are lots of videos showing the same thing where we make a 8 bar loop. What would be great is if you could make a video showing how you do this for a whole song with intro, bridge etc because thats where it gets tricky. Even better it would be amazing to see a video of someone who has written a whole song on guitar and see how loops would work in that situation, as that is also hard to do when there is a pre determined chord structure.

@@jefgibbons Hi thanks, it was very clever stuff and a cool tune but didn't really show how to take samples etc and make them work with a chord progression. The problem might be i'm not trying to make hip hop type stuff, more singer songwriter type stuff. Perhaps I'm asking too much of the software. Don't get me wrong I think you do a great job with your videos i learnt a lot from your basic ones so please don't think I'm being negative. It's just most cubase videos are either the type of stuff you did in that other video or heavy metal where the guitars are chug chug etc, it's seems so much harder when the guitar is finger picked or strummed, I just can't figure out how to incorporate melodic samples in them. Thanks again for taking the time to make the video and to reply to my comment.

Thanks again Jef. This was more than the title suggested, but it was all good. I like the option of having a movable mixer. -0- I have visual cognitive problems, and am just returning to music after over 15 years. Lot's of friends and family died in this time. I was using the Cubase SX - about 20 years old - and then the laptop wasn't so good etc. Now, the many plug-in VST instruments I miss, being 32 bits can't be plugged in to Cubase 10.5 which must have 64 bit plug-ins. -0- So, I was just seeing if there was a chart of instruments, instead of going through each one - even if they have sub-categories etc. For some reason, I kept going past the Halion. I have sounds in mind, and get quite distracted going through so many sounds that are 'full' and not so usable for composing. So I was after acoustic piano, fretless bass, real flutes etc. I also miss all the ethnic samples I had. {The external keyboard synths and samplers over 25 years old may be rusted. I;m not sure if I can still use the DIGI 001 box etcwith my newest MSI laptop, and will have to buy a few things again.} -0- Anyway, I will use Halion. I'm also intrigued by the chord track. Obviously, it does not attempt to change audio tracks. However, I do not always use notes in the same key, especially in the low bass range. And with fretless bass, I found that the original 'These Boots were made for Walking', the bass player actually uses some quarter tones. Is there a way of isolating tracks from the chord track? Or just picking the tracks that I would want to change 'chord-wise'. Sometimes the same 'riff' is played through different chord changes, but stays in the same key, when the key changes in other instruments. There are also 'chromatic' 'passing notes' that do not fit a chord. I will see if the chord track attempts to change those notes. -0- I'm 'redoing' or finishing pieces from long ago, that now after life's experience, I have lyrics for. I was surprised at the large range of rhythms in Groove Agent. Hopefully, I won't go 'loop crazy'. My old pieces had too many alternative [muted] tracks cluttering up the project. It's hard to focus on getting something finished, before it becomes monotonous, and another piece wants to come out. [So this is why, I have to be quick and know exactly where the instruments and samples are. I use samples from many artists - many now deceased and from tracks over 50 years old. There are restrictions of what can be done without paying some 'royalties?' or getting permission, isn't there? I do not mind stating where samples are from - if it gets to producing a record or public performance.

Great again, Jef. I'd find it a challenge using that little keypad. As a caveman revived from the the pre-wave file days when Cubase was just a MIDI to external keyboards, effects etc. to compose, I'd have to start with simple sounds - without all the delays etc. and then build up instead of using complex presets. I just get used to stripping away many delays and reverb, but it's good not to have to do the maths to work out delays that have to be reworked if the tempo has to change during the composition. [As being not a live keyboard player, sixteenth note 'runs' are impossible unless done near half speed. But then waves must be turned off.] -0- I'm neurologically impaired, and glad you brought up some things that I never thought of - but really needed to know. I was just holding down a note to run a Groove Agent SE pattern without seeing the individual components to change around. This is much better than starting from scratch when one has a melody and theme in mind, but can't stand the metronome clicks. -0- The other incredible thing with the later Cubase, is the chord track. At first, I found this 'unprofessional' or stifling to creation, watching how many throw bar long chords together without needing to think or experiment. I'm nowhere near able to understand [innovative] chord progressions, but would like to, as well as learn about key changes etc. [Although my mentor emphasised not following trends and sometimes a music piece may just use one or two chords, though as I'm used to the [horrific] electronic organ written music with chords instead of a bass clef, I remember that chords can regularly be of one quarter note length, usually when leading into another bar chord.] Now, it would be far to time-consuming to change a 'score' correcting all the notes one by one if chords have changed. -0- However, I'll have to go back to see the exact details I'm looking for about using a chord track; concerning whether this track automatically affects all [MIDI-type] tracks, or one has to go through each track and assign the chord track to each. This is where I need an individual tutor, as my mind, already acquainted with Cubase, has specific questions or an order. Attention deficit/neural damage and sifting through many points for a specific need is difficult. The further away notes are, the more they can stray from the usual chords [and some timbres also are easier with 'blue' notes]. Bass often seems to be 'autistic' and not doing what the others do. I was find the notes for the bass in the original Nancy Sinatra 'These Boots were Made for Walking' and found that I needed even quarter tones, and used the pitch bend. I'm particularly fond of the Jazz Double Bass sound and sustainable basses that 'slide' [portomento]. -0- A big challenge is having a range of orchestral strings for smooth legato and glissando. Now, I have to find out how to reconnect my laptop cubase sound to TV screen I use, as I'm long sighted and can't use glasses for long periods. My hunch is the configuration changed from loading a very old 2005 Cubase piece. I find I often have to reboot Cubase as taking tracks or waves files across comes up with having to save the piece with a new name, as 'corrupted' comes up when Cubase jams up. -0- NO, my laptop just wanted a rest, and now has let me activate my Audio Device in Audio Connections. -0- A question that I should place in your Audio Track video; why do some [double or stereo] wav files I drop into an audio track, not have any option for panning left and right? Other stereo pairs still permit panning in the mixing panel.
