I love Syncfusion. They have been offering their components free for us little folk for years. The first project I remember using them with was probably 15 years ago it seems like. What I didn't know about was Metro Studio. It's pretty slick. Nothing game changing, but definitely a nice quick way to pull some icons in different formats, including some code-based formats. Anyway, thanks for sharing. I look forward to seeing you dive in to some of the controls. I think I know you well enough to know that you'll be getting in to data bindings etc. That will be interesting.
@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
Well, I actually won't be getting too far into data bindings...yet. I wanted to give a good overview of how to use the controls, and how to go further on your own. But then I also am looking to hear from people what they actually want to see more of. Sometimes what I expect is not what I get. So, if a lot of people get stuck on data binding, I'll probably cover that, whereas if a lot of people are more interested in seeing how to use the controls in WinForms, I might cover that.

I usually get by with free controls when building my web apps for work - especially as my work wouldn't qualify for the free usage of Syncfusion controls. I'm going to have a look around them anyway and see if there's anything in there that would justify their usage that I can take to my employer to convince them to buy a licence.
@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
Sounds good. I'm always a proponent of not paying for something that you don't need, so don't force it. However, if you find that there is something that can elevate your web applications or save you a significant amount of time, then it makes sense. My guess is that you will either find the DataGrid to be worth it (it is an amazing product) or the reporting (whether that is the custom reports or just the exporting of the data grid. Being able to output Word, Excel, PDF, or PowerPoint documents from C# code is a pretty powerful option.)

@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
They elected a new president (who is not a Microsoft employee). Beyond that, though, there hasn't been much change. They move VERY slowly. A lot of that comes from relying on volunteers to do tasks in their spare time. The other part is how much they are trying to do at once. As a result, a few high-profile projects have withdrawn from the foundation. Beyond that, not much has changed.

@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
If I can use my own controls, I stay there. If I need more advanced features, I pick one vendor and use their controls. The key is to not take a dependency if you don't need to, but if you need to then limit that dependency to one vendor if possible.
@andywalter74262 жыл бұрын
@@IAmTimCorey I would suggest if you need more advanced features to build them. That way, you still don't have to take that dependency and you can make it work the way you want them to work. I always found it much easier and faster using/building my own advanced controls then using one from a vendor and spending so much time figuring out their way of doing it. Also, makes programs more difficult to maintain vs building your own. One purpose of getting into programming is to build your own stuff. If a person was going to just use what is out there, then there is no need to build anything.
@programmer58552 жыл бұрын
@@andywalter7426 It's certainly not faster and easier. LMAO I'd much rather invest my time working on unique/specific components to my app rather than re-inventing components such as data grids (with crud operations, column chooser, detail grid etc.), charts, schedulers, pdf viewers, document editors and so on. Not saying there isn't a case for creating your own components but saying it's faster and easier to build advanced features is not one of them, it's a cut and paste job from the demos. If a vendor has good docs/demos then it's usually very quick to get set up, just do your research beforehand.

The community edition is 100% selfish / money making - which is absolutely fine btw. If less established developers get into their tools they're likely to pay later on when they're turning over more money.

i tried syncfusion and really did not like it. i think its best for developers to create their own controls. then they can make it work the way they need it to. i even built some controls that synfusion does not even have. besides, even if developers built their own controls, eventually they will run out of things to do anyways unfortunately.
@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
Couple things here. First, you aren't going to make the type of controls that can replace Syncfusion. For instance, have you looked into how to create a control that would export a datagrid into a PDF report that is formatted? Or how to create a report that can be viewed on the web, shared with others, or exported in half a dozen different formats (Word, Excel, PPT, PDF, etc.)? Control vendors offer simple controls, but the reason we use them is for the more complex things that we cannot easily do (and maintain). Second, you need to change your mindset about running out of things to do. That's impossible. I've already challenged you multiple times in things you could do that you have not done. No developer will ever run out of work to do. It just cannot be done. What you can run out of is work that you WANT to do.
@andywalter74262 жыл бұрын
@@IAmTimCorey The only challenge was the improvements to the 5 day bible reading program. I asked some questions and got no answers so i would be able to proceed. i wish i knew what to do next since i created all the custom apps i wanted.
@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
I can't answer every question you have, nor can I be the project owner for guiding your project. You need to be able to look at a project, assess its weaknesses, and improve on them. I gave you a few ideas to work on for your Bible reading plan. However, I also gave you a challenge six months ago to build an enterprise app. Here is what I said: "I highly recommend you build an enterprise application. Even a small one like the TimCo Retail Manager will work. Actually build the full app, not just the small slice that I've created. Build out the full API, the full point of sale WPF app, the full offline-capable Blazor WebAssembly portal with both point of sale and administrative side, etc. Right now, our small sample has about 8,000 lines of code. By the time you are done actually finishing out just the things I rough-sketched in, you should have about 100,000 lines of code in an enterprise sample app. Show that to an employer. It would be a great start towards getting you that job you want." I know you were struggling with the planning, but this is what you need to work through. You can't just quit because you don't know everything. Get started, put a plan together, and try it. When it doesn't work, learn from it and try it again. Keep at it.
@andywalter74262 жыл бұрын
@@IAmTimCorey How can somebody show off the TimCo Retail Manager if the sql server is on my computer. Are there any free options for a sql database online? Because the only thing that can stop a person from doing the portfolio would be the money for data storage. I wish there was free options for data storage. Otherwise, only rich people can even do a portfolio to have a possibility of getting a job. It would mean that unless a person already has the job, they have no chance.
@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
First, you can get an Azure SQL database for $5/month. That's pretty cheap. Second, you can develop your improved version of the TimCo Retail Manager (remember, don't just make a copy - redo it on your own and improve it significantly) on your computer for free. Put the source code in GitHub. Once you get the application to the "fully working in every aspect" state, either pay the $5/month for SQL Server then or just document the application with screenshots and small videos of it operating and put those in the GitHub repo. Then you can show it off for free. Use your imagination. Don't just stop when you are presented with a potential obstacle. Think through how to get around it. That's a key trait of a developer.
