Welcome back to Intro to Synthesis, where Justin is continuing an extended look at oscillators. These videos are so brilliant. Nobody is gonna buy synthesizers if nobody can figure them out. I appreciate the way that Reverb assists me with my bad habits.

Hello, I haven't watched this video yet but I saw the first part in a youtube ad. I just want to say I've been using youtube since for a quite a long time- and I've never seen an ad that was more interesting to me than a video I was watching (any given video an ad interrupts)- but your breakdown of the waveforms was solid, it packed a really complete and passionate punch. I loved it and I looked for a link to more. I never thought I'd say that about an ad, but here I am.

5:55 FYI, this visualization is incorrect. What is shown is a 50% pulse width square wave just changing frequency (note). Changing the pulse width would make the upward part of the square pattern get longer (turning it into a rectangle) and the downward part of the pattern get narrower (eventually a downward spike). Turning the knob the other way would do the opposite. The note stays the same but the harmonic content changes. You kind of get the idea a little bit later when the oscilloscope view pops up, but that only shows one cycle of the wave.

This was excellent. Very clear, very well produced, thank you. Question: what is the oscilloscope-type software and/or device that you are using to display the waveforms? (I know this is the musical equivalent of asking "what photoshop brush are you using?", I'm sorry!)

Can someone explain what the visualizer shows and what he means with width of the wave? Would decreasing the width just mean increasing the frequency?

Why do they called it a LFO (low frequency oscillator) if its an automated modulation? I thought the oscillator just produces the wave....

nice tut and easy to understand! thank u. I just want to kindly suggest to change the Spanish subs when u give the vocal ensemble example, bc the subs assume that the bass singer is a male singer and the soprano is a female singer, which is a sexist stereotype right? just saying. thanks
@aghostina7111
@aghostina7111 4 жыл бұрын
this is how to do it: instead of “el bajo la canta una octava por debajo y la soprano una octava por arriba” stuck with one pronoun, “el bajo y el soprano”, or even more fair “la voz grave y la voz soprano”, like this: “la voz grave la canta una octava por debajo y la voz soprano una octava por arriba”. this is not a hater comment. I just happen to be a translator who have met male soprano and female bass voices.

Again, nicely produced by I'm sorry to say you are likely confusing new comers by not using terminology clearly and correctly. Pulse waves (also called rectangular waves) can be statically set to a particular width (duty cycle) and you can set a pulse wave to be a square wave (50% duty cycle) BUT if you pulse width modulate a square wave it is no longer a square wave, at least not most of the time. I know, this may be a picky distinction.

I'm a new-comer and he didn't confuse me at all. The contrary, in fact. I think this series is excellent. As you say, it's well produced, but it's also quite straightforward and comprehensible. Cheers.
