Always thought the SE.5 was a beautiful aircraft and to me it looked very advanced for its time. The rapid evolution of aircraft from 1914 to 1918 was always amazing to me. Especially the large bombers.

The Australian Airforce used the SE5a as it's frontline fighter for many years after The First World War it was years ahead of it's time. I wonder how it would have performed with the 450hp in 1925 to 900 hp in 1932 Napier Lion engine installed as a power unit. Fairy Aviation also had a fast and reliable engine in the Curtiss V12 they built under license which finally sparked the fire under a lazy solumnescent .... between the wars - Rolls Royce! There were plenty of other watercooled inline and aircooled radial engines from British aircraft engine manufacturers like Armstrong Whitworth to choose from even Hispano Suiza had one?. Logically it would have required a steel tubular airframe to hold the power output of these more advnced aircraft engines but with it's clever no non-sense streamlined layout could have been the inspiration behind a biplane airplane as fast as a Gloster Gladiator. The monoplane inspiration could have come later...

Built in 2007-2008. The Vintage Aviator Ltd are still able to make 'new' SE.5a's, though I don';t think they have any on the production line at the moment. See: www.thevintageaviator.co.nz

Yes, a Vickers Vimy would be awesome, wouldn't it. Somehow I can't really see anything like that being built -- simply too big!

Beautiful of course, but I wonder why these markings were chosen? B507 had a (edit: *geared*) Hispano Suiza installed, so it really was a different looking machine? Also a square windscreen, but that may be nitpicking!

The ImperialGerman Air Force was never “beaten”.

@@MothaLuva Neither was the German army. But it was clear which way it was going and that they would have seen utterly annihilated had the war gone on to 1919. So while not "beaten" they had already been given a severe pummeling and couldn't have lasted another round. The (in)famous German pride was the reason several myths spread after the war that they hadn't really been "beaten" but betrayed by their own. That pride was exploited by the infamous corporal. Sadly some people today still like to maintain the notion that Germany wasn't "beaten" in WWI. This also explains why the allies insisted on "Unconditional surrender" in WWII. This time there would be no chance for the Germans to believe they hadn't been beaten.

At the end of WWI, because the allies stopped at the German border, they allowed the German military forces to retire in good order - and with all their arms - into Germany, the nation chose to believe the absurd notion that they were undefeated. At the Versailles Treaty a French general was noted as saying: "we have only prevented the start of another war by 20yrs" (he was only 3mths out in this prediction!). So, at the end of WWII when the Germans were beaten - and lost AGAIN - that's why the allies went into Germany and conquored the country. They made DAMN sure - this time! - that the Germans were in no doubt whatsoever that they'd (again!) LOST the war!! To date - 76yrs later - that tactic has worked and Germany has never again tried starting another bloody war. Any other interpretation of these facts is pure, revisionist, BS. 👍
