Beat making and Reason go hand in hand! And today, we are thrilled to announce Beat Map, a brand new Player that will change the way you approach drums. We sat down with Grammy-nominated producers Mike & Keys to talk about Beat Map and here’s what they had to say.

Really cool video - Beatmap is fast becoming a go-to for me, even as someone who loves programming drums. Also I want whatever that first melodic sound was!

What if I don't feel like like looking all over the map for a certain beat? Here's my suggestion: create "Home Lock Position" button. Create microphone icon. Press it and say something like "trap beats near me". Then voice similar to Ryan's voice says, "I found some trap beats near you". 😂

I don't know, voice controlled services like that are giving me the heebie jeebies. Befire you know it, it would spy on you and send the data to an AI. Then the AI calls the fire department thinking your house is on fire, just because your beats are lit af.

D'know why Beat map didnt grab me at first. Trialed it for a month...could'nt feel it. Skip forward a couple of months, gave it another shot via Subcriptions. Now Beat map along with Dr Octo are my beat making go-tos. A couple of suggestions; The ability to change time signature would be good eg. 3/4, 6/8 etc etc. Like someone else said, "matching the signature of your Daw's transport". Also being able to save "snap shots" of cool rhythms you come across would be coOL.

I was sent an email asking what i would like to see in reason...frustrated i deleted the email. 20 years been asking for vector based rack so i can enlarge the well made plugins. your eyes arnt meant to burn when making music? make the rack full screen please.. have a 3 piece symbol like abletons 2 piece selector (arangement and session view) but make yours 3.. first one=full screen rack second one full screen midi editor with keyboard on the side.. 3rd one selects full screen arrangement view, like abletons arrangement view.. ..also it might be better to have the plugin or rack that is associated with each track separate so when you click on a track you get only those plugins that are used on that track, not all 500 in a row running down your screen. also please make rebirth part of reason, that acid sound is still cool to me. if i had a choice i would take away the option of being a plugin for other DAWS and make the arangment view in reason look more like the other DAWS.. sorry if i sound rude or stupid, i would like to use reason again it brings back good memories, thats the only reason im writing.

I know I’m gonna catch some flack for the following comment but it needs to be said. First, we got rid of drummer for dum machines and beat makers and now, we’re getting rid of beat makers for computer programming. Are we even artist and musicians anymore?

Using a DAW for anything else than mastering/mixing real instruments is of course a huge middle finger to 'real' musicians. But then again; not all of us can be masters of all the instruments that go into a proper tune.

It isn't replacing. Think of it as inspiration to make something better. Sure you can let the module program a drum groove and leave it. But anyone who wants to make their own music will record it to midi and change notes, adjust the pattern etc. It's great for people who know synths and melodies but aren't good at drums. Just like people who can program a sick drum groove but don't know chords or how to program synths. Just like how some giant producers use only presets and others make every sound from scratch. All that matters to you as a listener is that when you sit back and close your eyes, do you enjoy what your ears are hearing. Who cares how the medium that makes it to your ears was made.

Not sure why people like you see things like this as a negative. I dont get it. 🤔 What's different than using samples or midi files or programming a sequencer? Wack music can still be made with this one device just as great music can. It's just a tool. If you have a drummer ready to go at the drop of a hat to do different styles and you have great mics, mic-ing techniques and a great console; that's great for you. But some of us dont. People said similar things about drum machines and drummers still have yet to cease existing. Again. It's just a tool. You can choose to use it or not. But at the very least I'm sure you'll have some inspiring fun playing with this beat map device.

Hello everyone, thank you for bringing up a great discussion. Hopefully, I can cover everyone’s point thus far. 1) A DAW is nothing more than a modern day tape machine. It’s probably a Giant Middle Finger to the recording industry but not musicianship. Think about it, if you’re a home recording artist, you may invite as many or as little musicians to record into your DAW as you want and contribute to YOUR musical ideas and expressions without having to worry about paying additional session time in a commercial studio. 2) Unfortunately, we’ve been in this situation before, where we say, we’re not replacing, we’re using it as tools and we end up replacing it anyway because human beings at our core are pretty lazy and only interested in getting from point A to B as fast as possible with the least amount of work as possible. And I’m sorry Steven to call you out, but this is how we’re getting to the current music situation we’re in. As listeners, all we want is to hear a beat in the background but never really sit down and LISTEN! to what the artist, musicians, producer, etc... are trying to convey. Then, after a few plays, we dispose of the music like FastFood wrappers. By the way, wasn’t FastFood supposed to be for special occasions and treats, or when pressed for time? Yet now we consume more FastFood than ever. But the listener is not the only one to blame, the artist and producers too, we just make lazy one liner songs, lazy beats and call it a hit. No wonder Listeners are disposing of our music. 3) Lastly, I am an Electronic Musician myself because I don’t have a room for a full drum set or piano or the funds to buy a butt load of vintage synths or modern synths for that matter. But at the end of the day, I play or program that beat. I play and record that piano line or bass line or synth line at the risk of not being liked by others. And there my friends lies the issue. We fear failure! None of the great beat makers started great, it was by TRIAL & ERROR that they became great. But they never stopped learning the craft they were attempting to hone in. But here we are telling ourselves, my beat is not that great, here Beat Map, I’m done trying, you do it Beat Map! That road will never lead us to victory let alone greatness. I’ll leave you all with one last thought and analogy. For those around my age of 35. Remember, video games in the 90s? A kid would have to visit the friend’s house, interact and play together, learn how to take turns if more than 2 friends got together, form teams and figure out who was good at what at that point in time. But as technology and communications advanced, we all began staying home, losing interactions, bonds, influences, etc... Remind you of anything? In commercial studios you’ll see a team of people gathered around working off each other, influencing and inspiring the production. But most of us bedroom producers, won’t even have a friend over to explain what we’re doing or listen to critique. Instead, here Beat Map, you do it. Please continue the discussion. Thank you for reading.
