My pet cockatiel is 19- old enough to drive or smoke! She's not really showing any signs of age, except for a slightly weak wing due to a cat attack a few years back (a cat let itself into our house and grabbed her!!). She's got beautiful colouring- she's a whitefaced pied pearl. Due to her unusual colouring, I thought she was male until she was three, when she laid an egg! I've had her since she was a tiny chick and she's my constant companion. I love her to bits
@BlackthornWitch7 жыл бұрын
Awww. So nice to hear! And oh yeah, the coloration is very beautiful and the pied does often vanish the signs of the gender, especially combined with pearl. (I love whitefaces - they are always pretty, no matter what they are combined with.

Hello. we had four cockatiels. Freddy was the first, a bird found in a bush outside the office where I worked. Our vet thought him to be well into adulthood, certainly more than 5 and perhaps as much 8 or 9. Freddy was with us for 16 years. We also adopted a bonded pair, Monty and Chrystal who were known to be 13 when they came to live with us. They had not been well cared for, suffering from poor diet and inadequate perches and toys. We thought to give them comfort for the last couple years of their lives. Chrystal suffered a stroke 13 years later and Monty followed her three months later, never having worked through his grieving. Our Sunny we rescued from the bottom of a so called breeder's display cage. She was only a few weeks old and suffered from many health issues during her 12 years with us. All of them were wonderful companions and are still missed many years later. Thank you for sharing your stories.

I have older cockatiels myself I lost one at 20 due to cancer, 2 years ago. My other bird is now 20. Mine does that stablizing thing where he "bites" to keep his head still while you preen/scratch him on the head. Once you get him going on a particular whistle he hangs onto it for about 10 min.

@IbakonFerba7 жыл бұрын
If you want to have Cockatiels or any parrots at all you need to get more than one, they need non human company as they live in swarms in nature. Having them live alone can lead to severe deviant behaviors! Also you should keep in mind that most of the cages you can buy in stores are way to small, and even if you have a big cage you should let the birds out of the cage every now and then so they can fly around. Sadly there are many people who don't care about those things...
@kdaa20117 жыл бұрын
AH! I worded that wrong! But yes! Ive been reasearching for years. I have a big cage in mind, and I'm planning on letting them out of course, but due to me having other dogs, were clipping their wings so it doesn't hurt itself. I have many toys that ive handpicked out and made sure weren't bad for them (including mirrors, bells, ect) Ive got a lot of foraging toys aswell... I'm sure your advice will help a lot of soon to be bird owners!
@IbakonFerba7 жыл бұрын
• PhantomKdaa • That sounds a lot better, mirrors aren't good though. They don't recognize themsevels in the mirror so they think it's another bird which can lead to stressfull situations!

@BlackthornWitch7 жыл бұрын
Aww. Maybe I can help you out with that. Can you tell me a bit of their backgrounds? Did they come from a breeder or pet store? How do they behave with you? Do they escape and hiss or just simply ignore? Tell me a bit more and I can maybe see if there are some tips that I could give. :3 Taming them can sometimes be a bit tricky, if there are bad experiences in their history, but slowly you can build the trust and bond with them. ^^
@phoebe28527 жыл бұрын
Oh, thank you so much! :) They were bought from a pet store just over a year ago and were my grandmother's for a while until their presence within her home began to have bad effects on her health. When I got them they were scared since my grandmother wasn't all that able to interact with them. One of them is quite friendly, she'll let me touch and stroke her, although neither myself or my parents have the courage to let them out o the cage as of yet. The other one is a little more aggressive. The most I've ever been able to do with him is tough his beak for maybe a second before he backs away. Neither of them are too fond of my hands being near them and it breaks my heart to scare them. I'm with them every night since I'm currently at college (thought I'm on my break for a few more weeks until the second year starts) and they seem to be more happy to be around me when they're sleepy - basically the only time that I'm able to even go near the more aggressive one. I've tried my best to be around them as much as I can, but sometimes I need a break since they tweet (or as I call it 'scream' so loud) the most I've been able to do is teach one of them 'all around the mulberry bush' (which is a treat to wake up to ^-^)
@phoebe28527 жыл бұрын
Also recently, just now in fact, the more aggressive one came closer to me than he's ever been in his life. I moved my hand a little closer to him and he seemed fine with that but just a moment after he spat at me. He's never done it before so I think it's a situation-based incident, although I'm not too sure. Was I doing something wrong? Or was he telling me to back off?
@yummyapplestroodle7 жыл бұрын
it took me about 10 years to tame my petstore cockatiel that was in ownership of someone who never let him out of cage in 90's, and he was 6 when I got him :/ Now he is 25 and happy litlle papa that has many children that are now around 15 years old.

Beautiful birds , you are great with birds, you are so funny 😆 bisexual cockatiel🤣I had a cockatiel that lived almost 22 years with me I think he was 2 or 3 I don’t really know? It was given to me then I bought a female, but sadly she only lived 8 years then i got a bird from a my husband’s ex brother in law but he mistreated that poor bird so I asked him to let me have & he did ; but it only lived 2 years with us she was a sweet bird that didn’t enjoy her life; I don’t know 🤷♀️ why do people get pets to mistreated, I just have 2 new cockatiels that my friend gave me ; I hope they live a long time I love ❤️ my birds🐤🐦I been getting birds since I was a teenager ❤️

i heard that you can tell if a cockatiel is old or young by looking at their crest, and if the crest is big and kinda facing backards that means he is old, but mine has only 1 crst feather that is long enough to be facing backwards, and fun fact, he makes the exact noises that your elder cockatiels make, does that means he is old? or perhaps middle age?
