On the one hand, this is everything I ever wanted - on the other hand this is scary since it requires basically one slipup to create a plethora of false verified claims. Also, I see potential for this to be used ina very distopian future. I am very sceptical and would like to know what and how the backbone works.
@Onyx-it8gk3 күн бұрын
If a claim can be "verified" by someone untrustworthy, which leads to your account being associated with that untrustworthy verification, how do you prevent people from abusing this? What if someone ranks up an untrustworthy status just to spam verify real people. Same thing for bots? How are they prevented from spam verifying anyone and anything?

Why does everyone want to use phones for things like this? I use Debian, not Android. Will I ever be able to use FUTO ID? I'm also a bit worried about anonymous accounts - if the users who vouch for me are known, it doesn't seem too difficult to narrow down to a few options. Even without that feature though, it is definitely worthwhile - or would be if it would run on my machine.

I feel like this is the biggest issue with some of the projects Futo supports, like Grayjay, which have a dependency on Google Linux (Android), instead of something like Alpine Linux(Desktop)/PostMarketOS(Mobile).

How to prevent a Sybel attack where someone makes a bunch of fake accounts to vouch for other accounts? The PGP web of trust concept never became widespread and this is essentially the same thing, no?
@spacepriorКүн бұрын
The merit of the web of trust is that as soon as anyone notices the sybils, we can figure out who made the sybils by looking at the structure of the web, and blame them for it, and cut them out.
@arcradКүн бұрын
@spaceprior perhaps. Seems difficult or impossible to identify a Sybil, and even more so to identify them en masse. There is a asymmetry where it's easy to make Sybils and hard to identify them.

Great utility! However, since this is mostly meaningful if it's used for long term and by many, I wonder what recourse is there if you get hacked and your key is stolen, or if your phone breaks? Because it's certain that if used by masses for long enough, there will by many cases of issues like losing your key or losing it to someone.

This isn't anonymous and seems at risk of poisoning (not to mention that untrustworthy people absolutely can vouch for other sincerely, it's just hard to tell which are which). The part about being able to tell which accounts are legitimate, but that assumes the ID is verifiable... which I'm not certain of. At least if you stumble across one of their accounts you can still tell for sure which others they have. I don't really like that it's an app though. Phones are one of the biggest problems right now.

@@XDRosenheim 2 of them coming to my mind right now is that you are doxing yourself when people realize they can triangulate you by the people who verified you, also you can't be truly anonymous while having a trusted Futo ID. Second one is the potential user base for DID's is very niche, the service needs to be integrated into larger social media that usually require KYC of some sort but can pivot to DID. Futo ID on its own is not enough, it badly needs API intergration so other apps can use its back end.
