Do you have mold, mildew or odors in your front load washer? If so, you're not alone. This is a common problem consumers have experienced for years with front load washers.
GE is attempting to change that with its brand new UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock Technology. Check out this video of our GE factory representative detailing the features and explaining how, in his words, GE is attempting to close the door on mold, mildew and odor in front load laundry.
VIDEO OVERVIEW
Brands have typically addressed the issue by recommending customers leave the door open after wash cycles to air out the machine and to periodically wipe out excess moisture from the gasket and other sensitive areas. Some take it a step further recommending a regular bleach cycle to eliminate lingering bacteria.
GE, on the other hand, has spent more than two years developing the UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock, which is a set of features and technology that address the mold, mildew and odor issue head on. At the time of this posting, this innovative technology is the industry's first and only solution of it's kind.
Since moisture and resulting bacteria are the main culprits, GE's UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock is designed to drain, dry and defend the washer gasket, dispenser and other susceptible areas.
Drain
Utilizing a wider gasket, GE's new front loader can remove more water than most competitive models.
Dry
Some creative thinking and superior engineering led to the development of GE's revolutionary vent system that draws air into the closed washer to actively dry the gasket and the washer drum after a cycle is complete.
Defend
GE has partnered with Microban, a global leader in antimicrobial and odor-control technologies, to outfit the washer with a gasket, dispenser and pump that can actually prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

I bought my LG in 2004; never had an odor problem. I never heard of this as an issue until now that I’m shopping for a new washer.

We had a Samsung front load washer that went out in three years. the tub bearing was what went out, and the new one only last a year before it started showing signs of going out. We are now going with the GE 850 series front load set. So Far so good.

I just bought one of these self venting GE washers. I’m here because I want to see how this venting system is supposed to work. After having a Samsung washer Break down after just three years of use and be completely unrepairable, then trying to replace it with another Samsung washer that broke down LITERALLY four days after purchase, then deciding not to get a Whirlpool because you have to basically take the machine apart to clean out the lint filter with them (shame on you Whirlpool!), I decided to opt for a GE. Made the original Samsung purchase from Best Buy and when it turned out to be impossible to fix it, they offered to replace with a new washer of my choice- more accurately, I got a credit for my original purchase price to put towards a new washer from them. What I really wanted to do was replace with a Speed Queen front loading machine, but Best Buy doesn’t carry them, so since I didn’t want the whirlpool, and I won’t have an LG machine in my house (I think their products are garbage) I decided on a GE. I’ve had mixed success with GEs over the years and I know a young couple who bought GE appliances for their kitchen-they’ve been having problems: A wall oven broke down when she ran her self clean feature… And knobs on her gas cooktop…? Yeah, the silver finish is literally peeling off of them in flakes. These are just 15 month old appliances! So I’m holding my breath with this GE washer, hoping that it lasts a few years with no problems… I did buy the extended warranty. All that skepticism aside, I didn’t even realize that the washer I ordered had this venting system, or the specialized Microban rubber. After doing a half a dozen loads the first day I got it, I’m pretty happy with its performance. The only immediate criticism I can give it is this- The powdered detergent I used did not completely flush from the dispensing tray into the tub during the wash. Realized I’m probably going to have to just put my powder detergent directly in the tub to avoid that. I know everybody loves the liquid detergents, but I have become increasingly dissatisfied with them. A lot have animal fats in them- which contributes to turning a front load HE washer into a stinking garbage dump of mold and bacteria. I’m eager to see whether this new rubber and the venting system actually do prevent my washer from rotting out, but quite frankly, I probably still will leave the door propped open, dry down the rubber between uses, AND do a monthly or bi-monthly self cleaning with Affresh brand washing machine detergent. For what it’s worth, both of the Samsungs I’ve purchased were very highly reviewed by customers. My first one broke down in mid April and I’ve been without a washer until yesterday July 9. It was under warranty and the repair man did his best… I think he replaced practically every part inside that washer, and it still would not work properly. The warranty company literally paid twice the original purchase price in parts and labor to try to fix the stupid thing. Oh, yeah, one of the brand new Samsung parts that was ordered came DOA! >SIGH< So, my suggestion to anybody out there looking for a washing machine, a front loader, is this: don’t buy a Samsung.

Any way to automatically dry the drum after the wash is done? Manually pressing the vent button doesn't always occur. It would be just as easy to leave the door open. Ideally the washer would detect it is wet, wash is done, and automatically start drying the drum. No button press.

This takes many many minutes. I don't know if it's worth it. I just got a GE washer. Interesting concept, but disconcerting when you have no idea how long it's going to go. Mine started over an hour ago! Just gave up and stopped it. Not fully developed. It should only go for a known amount of time.

Is the vent feature supposed to make any noises mechanically? Every time it vents there’s literally no noise other than the beep from the machine at the end of the wash
@AnthroSam614

The beep at the end of the wash is a reminder to start it. You actually have to push the ultrafresh vent button and then it runs the vent cycle. (He says the same at 0:35.)

Hi will this work if I keep the washing machine out in the garage? I live in Florida and it gets very humid in my garage in the summertime.

I just got this beautiful washer & that feature runs for 8 hours wasting electricity. Leaving the door open & shutting off the light is free. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Also, the warm & hot water settings are still cold! Stop trying to control us! 😒

Sounds like something thrown in at the last minute as an afterthought. It takes 8 hours to dry out an empty tub? It doesn't take that if you just leave the door wide open! I don't know, my parents taught me a job worth doing is a job worth doing well. Let's see what some of the other companies come up with to answer this.

Just to let everyone know, the Ultra Fresh Vent system does not do a Damn thing, the Washer stinks like every other Washing Machine. It does Nothing. I’ve owned one for 6+ months now and I thought it would be a good idea at first, being there is No Fan Pushing air through the Drum it’s a novel idea with no backbone. On top of the annoying beeps, while it’s supposedly doing some thing after the cycling of the door after a load of wash. Their matching dryer is no better. It rattled from day one. The front sheet metal is loose on the body of the dryer. My last washer and dryer was a pair of Kenmore elite HE3’s these, I guarantee you will not last near as long. Also, the controls are annoying if you walk by and just barely touch them by accident, it will change the cycle midstream. The settings on the dryer are a nightmare. Overall, personally, I guess you get what you pay for. These are a far cry from a decade or two ago washing & Drying machines.

This is by far the worst washer I’ve own. It uses so little water, that the clothes never get cleaned, so you must use multiple cycles, or your clothes will still be dirty and have residual detergent on them. Worst of all, this washer will stink badly of mold, if you don’t use it at least every 2 days that the smell will sink into your walls. I was out of town for 2 weeks and I still can’t get rid of the moldy smell. I must have ran 2 bottles of bleach through it with no respite from this terrible smell.
