Hi! Loving your reaction so far. -Unnie does mean older sister, not sure how other groups use it but yeah. -Official name is Mamamoo, but they're always doing random stuff that's gold for memes. And they know it, so jokingly address themselves as Mememoo because of that.

Eonni is the term for woman calling older sister/woman, while man calling older sister/woman are noona. Man calling older brother/man is hyung, but the term Oppa, is usually said between siblings (younger girl toward her older brother/s) or someone who is really close between men and women. There's also Ahjussi (older man or wide age gap) and Ahjumma (older woman or wide age gap). Well we Asian do have special name/call for older or elderly people 😁

I see moomoos have answered most of your questions. I don't think anyone has done a video explaining Mamamoo's history in depth. The info is out there but you have to piece it together from various sources and you'll probably mostly hear it from comments by fans. You get some of it in part 2 of Moo YT's guide to MMM. I don't recall hearing Solar or the other members talk about their vocal training. Of course they had vocal coaches when they became trainees under RBW but the agency signed them because their skills were already at a very high level. Solar had started college with the idea of becoming a flight attendant however she realized it wasn't for her and decided to audition as a singer. At that point she was older than most trainees and was rejected by about 50 agencies because of her age before signing with RBW. As an indication of her talent (and balls) her audition piece for RBW was Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. I think why RBW signed Solar and the other members should be explained. They were all audition rejects or retreads from other companies. At her auditions Hwasa was bluntly told she was fat and ugly and sent packing. Moonbyul & Wheein signed with RBW after failing to debut with another company. Despite warnings from industry insiders that Mamamoo would fail miserably because the members didn't fit the prevailing beauty, body and/or age standards RBW gambled on their vocal talent, performance skills and creativity with the novel idea of promoting them as artists rather than teen idols. The usual kpop formula is to choose girl group members based on how their looks and skills fit into a marketing plan centered on a group concept such as cute, innocent, sexy or girl crush. Especially at the time Mamamoo debuted in 2014 the vast majority of girl groups were strictly performers doing music commissioned from teams of songwriters to fit their group concept, whereas from the beginning Mamamoo has been involved in all creative aspects of their career including songwriting, composing, arranging, choreography, styling and MV concepts. Since MMM isn't limited to a specific group concept they're also free to explore many styles of music and they have an extremely diverse discography. People say Mamamoo can sing anything and write a song about anything and they've pretty much proved both claims over the years. They've carved out their own niche in kpop and it all started with how and why they were assembled to begin with.

Yeah, to pull off Whitney Houston is out of this world. I saw that video and was kinda surprised at how easy she made it look. It's amazing the groups that are popular in KPOP aren't always the cookie cutter ones. It seems like the ones that go against the grain are more respected for longer. At least, that's what I've been seeing when I think of MMM, Twice, and Dreamcatcher. Maybe NewJeans because they have a mellow R&B sound that I hear in their songs. Twice, because of Jeongyeon's controversial weight fluctuations. Dreamcatcher because they seem like the blacksheep of the KPOP world.

@@the_talking_muffin You lost me with Twice - I've always thought of them as the prototypical cute concept girl group. I agree that groups need to find a way to stand out from the crowd but I think the size of the artist's agency has a lot more to do with a group's popularity than their uniqueness. For example, albums by rookie groups who I consider fairly generic under the Big 4 agencies sell in the millions whereas MMM albums rarely sell over 100K.

Solar talks about singing on a show called Life Bar (i think) on Diggle Classic channel. She was training to be a flight attendant and street busking on the side. Someone tried to recruit her then and she turned them down. Later she changed her mind. And got turned down 50 times before she got recruited by RBW. She sang I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston's version). There is a pre-debut video of her performing it. You can hear her raw talent in that video. She hadn't learned how to use a mic properly yet. And it's still pretty amazing.

Purple Hawke did an amazing job, this is by far the standard for getting to know the members personalities which is a highlight, even tho it’s a few years old. There are some more guides for how the group is formed, and they have a Netflix doc that was done about them that’s coming to US Netflix soon that is good. Couple of quick notes, Byul had auditioned for a few companies previous to RBW and found her groove with the members. While making the switch to rapper helped her debut with Mamamoo, her vocal confidence was shot for a few years. Thankfully over the last few years she’s started singing a lot more and won a vocal competition. Solar actually started very late for idols, many start in their young to mid teens but she was an adult ready to be a flight attendant and travel the world, but had amazing raw vocal talent. Basically as a one last hurrah auditioned and to her surprise (being the younger sister and typically younger person in her personal life) ended up as the leader of Mamamoo. It was a challenge but something like you saw her passion for her YT channel that she took on. There’s a great 20min video about her as the leader that gives great looks at how they operate when they aren’t performing and their absolute adoration for each other. They really have clawed their way from the bottom where they had to do their own choreo and make up, to the success of their just finished world tour. Great reaction, and you are correct it’s Mamamoo. Mememoo was just an old joke. I greatly simplified all the info, I think you’ll enjoy discovering all their stories in reactions and in your own time cuz there’s a lot to absorb!

39:28 That's not Daisy from Momoland, it's Irene from Red Velvet. Moonbyul had her own weekly radio show called Studio Moon Night and she would have various idol groups as guests such as Dreamcatcher, Red Velvet's Seulgi, WJSN, Purple Kiss and of course each Mamamoo member when they released their solo songs and group songs. Moonbyul won a top award for her show.

This intro video is a good one. It doesnt get into some of their early years being told they are basically ugly better be the best vocalists. Solarsido is worth checking out, Solar has been at it for a few years. Besides the challenges, she has incredible covers, like Michael Jackson man in the mirror, Dance covers, Mukbang which hilarious. She has switch up videos for example Moonbyul singing Solar's solo and Solar singing Moonbyul. Also interesting videos like a serious tour of the war museum in korea, interesting because she gave the perspective as her own people knew the korean war, rather than what we hear here in the US. Moonbyul eventually started Moonbyul2da which is does have a couple of covers and singing but more vlogs and doing things. Wheein also started a channel Whee In, which is mostly vlogging, those two have only been at it a year. Hwasa has a channel but doesnt really produce content. Studio Moon Night is Moonbyul's radio/streamed show. She does in fact do interviews and that type of thing including interviews of the other members when they have solos. She has had the show a few years and is popular. Hwasa has done a couple of TV shows and streamed shows. The most recent had mamamoo perform a medley live and it was great. They have appeared on TV shows, in contests individually and as a group. and Last year Solar starred as the lead actress in the musical Mata Hari. No videos but Solar did release and End of year Karaoke where she did one song from the musical.

She does not do that anymore but it was a great show while it lasted. She now runs her own YT channel and does different kinds of stuff there, the way Solar's channel started out.

OK maybe this is where i finally say something about the "handsome" vs "pretty" translation. So basically they are actually saying "good looking" which is used primarily towards men in korea, but not exclusively. I dont know exactly why it translates to "handsome" when its translated more as "good looking". the korean word for pretty however is almost ALWAYS used for women which MIGHT be why the other is translated as "handsome".

If only the term 'photogenic' could translate to every language on Earth simply because the term is universal. It could mean 'cute' or it could mean 'pretty' or it could mean 'handsome' or it could mean 'gorgeous'. In any case, it means 'worth taking a picture of'.

@@the_talking_muffin Wait, you mean Chaeyoung from Twice? HER being called 'handsome'? She has always been CUTE from my perspective and now she is GORGEOUS on top of that, too! I really don't think handsome fits her at al, she's too adorable for that. I really don't agree with it being used for Moonbyul either because I have never seen her as 'androgynous'. She's gorgeous just like the rest of the ladies in MMM. BUT, being raised over there and basically mind-controlled and brainwashed by the system, I guess she sees herself as androgynous. It's systemic, really. Everybody over there says that Mamamoo is not the best-looking group...Koreans are just WEIRD. Hwasa is an 'Exotic Supermodel' over here...

The one in the video is from her Famous Byul cafe show, it’s like a radio show but only for a short while, then she went on again as a part of the Naver’s Avengirl radio show host, then been given her own slot by Naver, her own radio show called Studio Moon Night ( it’s good, she talked about music and everything with her guests) but since they went on tour last year, with the group comeback and her participation in a vocal competition called Second World (she won btw) Studio Moon night has been put on hold and we don’t know if it will be available again or not. She also once participated in a soccer variety show and scored one of the goal that given their team promotion to super league but she has to leave due to her busy schedule. She has youtube channel as well, i’ll let you guess her channel name tho 😅

We saw her live on air 3 times a week for her radio show and when the competition started she released song cover that she sang on the show for every round ( you should watch her singing Congratulations , I’ll throw it away, Energetic and Refuge from the show it’s ok even on your free time)except for the last one before the final. She stated that she prefer to work than just resting at home.

Korea is VERY conservative, and then there is the KBS(Korean Beauty Standards) which she doesn't fit... and the KBS are unhealty and insane. Unnie is always use for an older girl/woman(sister). Calling a woman Pretty works the same way as it does in the west... you would rarely call a woman Hansome(in Korea), unless you are teasing them. The "FAN" on the phone was Solar joking with Moonbyul.

I’d like to add something, it is not common but Koreans do say ‘handsome’ to women too (Being a Korean myself, I carefully assume that these things you said in the comment were true 10-20yrs ago. Not now. The Unnie thing… that also kinda changed too) The word ‘handsome’ in Korean is a combination of ‘look’ and ‘good’ so…a girl can also look good Thus, handsome is not used for teasing women in Korea

Soju is like weak vodka (40 proof) with a slight sweetness. It's nasty but in Korea it's cheaper than bottled water. There are also flavored varieties that are actually tasty. The cheap stuff is diluted grain alcohol with a little artificial sweetener. Better brands are, well, better.

Yeah, Soju is really nice. I'm able to get different brands of Soju and different flavors here in so called "asia stores" for a reasonable price without ordering. It's $4 to $5 each bottle (including tax) and most of the time a drink it pure instead of mixing with beer, sprite or milkis. Got to like it more, way more than wodka for example - which is the most comparable to soju but soju has only half the alcohol in it. (about 16-20%)
