i tried gopro a year ago, and the low light performance was horrendous. I mean so bad it looked worse than a VHS camcorder from 40 years ago. I had no idea they were totally incapable of even moderate low light.

Some thoughts a few weeks into owning an Action 4. I waited for the 5 to release and decided based on what had changed, the value of the Action 4 made sense for me. I was taken by surprise that the Action (nor the 5) has not got any form of spot metering. This doesn't seem to ever get any specific mention in reviews, and is such a fundamental I never thought to check. There are light conditions and scenarios the Action 4 does not know what to expose. Early to mid-morning low winter sun day and I get dark colourless footage because the camera is trying to save highlights in the sky rather than correctly expose my son riding his bike 3m in front of me. Yes there are manual settings and limits on auto-exposure, but this is an action cam, touch to spot meter I find hard to believe not a feature. GoPro has had this since early generations and still do. The gimbal like footage horizon balancing produces is the party trick for me, love this feature. But not possible in 4:3 the ratio I wanted to shoot in. I have to record in 16:9 (or 9:16) when means choosing landscape or portrait to record, rather than the flexibility 4:3 affords. GoPro can do this in 4:3. I also assumed DJI would have similar functionality to GoPro where a "lens" can be applied in post to choose a narrower fov (this is not just cropping). No such feature exists. The camera and menus are quick, easy and intuitive. Do I like the camera, yes. Am a little disappointed, also yes. Some consolation taken from the areas I have been critical in the Action 5 is no better. But also tells me this is not likely to change in future firmware/apps. Even more pleased I didn't buy the Action 5 Pro. The one thing that works as well as I hoped is the quick release. Swapping the camera from handlebar mount to hand strap mount to the saddle mount on my bike to get varied footage is a breeze, takes seconds. But I am left thinking maybe I should have spent the extra on the GoPro Hero 13.

Overheating comment: I needed an action cam that could record in a hot airplane cockpit since I like filming when I fly - old Piper, no AC, so gets really hot in summer with little/no air circulation, I'm generally dripping sweat. Recorded over an hour at 1080p with no issue. Will try higher res next time, but thats pretty promising.

The later versions of 3 had already addressed the issue. And it would be impossible for the 4 to have it, as they were very aware of it and the bad reputation that mistake cost them.

I think that's why they released version 4 at very short intervals. The firm lost credibility, but I also lost money. I didn't buy version 3 because I don't trust it. Now version 4 is much, much more expensive

Gentlemen of DJI: For Osmo Action 4, PUT A RECORD BUTTON ON THE SCREEN, THAT START AND STOP THE RECORDING! just as smartphones have it and so has the Insta 360 Ace Pro. The physical record button is extremely hard, those of us who make Vlogs are repeatedly hitting this button that makes our hand hurt and moves the shots because of how hard it is, and it is also impractical because it is at the top and not in front. If we use the voice command it ruins the recording, since the “Stop Recording” appears in the video and spoils the shot. I hope they make a software update, very soon in the short term, and that they include the record button on the screen.

A low light mode for DJI Osmo Action 4 would be welcome, as it is with DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Action 4 does quite poorly in low light, at night with street lights. Pocket 3 films unexpectedly well in low light, but it has the disadvantage of being very fragile.

You need an iPhone with iOS 12.0 or later. I don't know what android version though, it doesn't say.

The camera doesn't have gps. You can buy a remote that does, which is what allows you to track your speed, elevation, ect. To answer your question, yes you can turn that off.
