Sometimes you see an object and it just captivates you. You can't look away. You can't even really explain what you're looking at either. Marc Newson's Hourglass is one such object. It takes the idea of one of the most basic time-measuring instruments ever devised and pushes it to its limits. Every little bit of the Hourglass has been carefully engineered and refined, and from the first time we saw one we were smitten. So, we did the only logical thing and teamed up with Marc to bring you this limited edition creation, the Marc Newson Hourglass for HODINKEE. For the full story, go to www.hodinkee.c...

"On one hand you're witnessing time, but on the other hand it's completely so timeless, it actually, if anything focuses your attention on the opposite of time, if that makes any sense?"... NO MATE, IT DOESN'T.

As an Industrial Designer (ie. Someone who does what Marc Newson does), I appreciate the process behind the idea (the build quality and attention to detail) but it is wholly unnecessary. He designed the Atmos 561, which was superb...but this is just cashing it in. It would also help to mention how much time it takes for the hourglass to come to an end. Believe me, it does not trickle those ball-bearings for an hour (the problems of having polished metal balls over coarse sand is that they move too fluidly and quickly)

Brought to us by the same outfit that asks thought-provoking questions on their instagram, like "Are there really any decent watches under $5,000??". Though seeing them get roasted, and then subsequently deleting it after getting the monocle slapped out of their eye, was awesome.

At first I thought the balls were solid rose gold. Then I thought that since they're copper, this thing should come in at under $1,000 and it's still kinda cool. Then I heard it is $12,000USD and thought it must be April 1st.

Philip Beresford I agree. I fell in love with this and thought I'd go as far as $1000 for it. $12k? I just don't get it. Then again, most people don't get spending more that $100 on a watch. ... wow... I suddenly feel alienated from both the watch-lover crowd and those-who-don't-get-it.

I respected these guys a lot and took most everything they said as gospel but to try to sell a glass full of buckshot is insulting, the 20k watches that were made for for Mr Ben were expensive but they were real watches and real engineering, very disappointed with what I see as greediness

Twelve. Thousand. Dollars. I'm in the wrong line of work. All I needed was some visually stimulating dohickee (it's almost an anagram), some softly playing hipster-friendly instruments, a nice fireplace backdrop and some pretentious commentary about the dying art of blowing glass and "the opposite of time." THE OPPOSITE OF TIME, CAURL. Then I, too, can sell overly stylized wall ornaments (that already cheaply exist, just with sand instead of ball bearings) for roughly the cost of a state bachelors degree.

yes I get the crafting behind it and the design but the price is a fucking joke. Not even "premium" bottled water manages to rip you off like this. My dislike goes to Hodinkee as a whole, not to the guys that spent hours filming and editing this video. which I must admit, was beautifully done.

Everyone that's saying Hodinkee is charging an absurd price for this piece is wrong, yes its absurdly expensive but given what it is its very fair. This is the same as the original Ike Pod SGSS but simply limited to 100 pieces and branded by Hodinkee, the difference is this is actually $1,000 than the original. So really, Hodinkee is charging you less just for having their name on instead of the original.

12k is kind of understandable with a limit of 100 pieces, also considering Marc Newson designed it, the man that designed a chair that sold at auction for $4.7 Million. You're buying the name behind the product.

This "object" ...is just like every other object like it ...it doesnt start working until you make it start working indeed..... you are paying $11,950 for ball bearings covered in copper folks. These types of sales occur as a bubble is forming in certain areas of investing .. the vintage watch craze will not last like anything else...BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PAY HUGE PREMIUMS FOR ~ especially if 12,000 is alot of money for you..

But what exactly did he design? You couldn't pick him out of a line-up. It doesn't have any identifying features. And he didn't make it himself. And i could have understood even 2-3K. But 12K is ludicrous.
