Paul, The magneto end cap is held on by a leaf spring loose rivetted to a hex. stand off that doubled as one of the magneto end casting fasteners. That is the 8" front brake and the actuating lever lies backwards not forwards for a near straight pull by the cable. The original alloy rims were made by Dunlop and stamped "Dunlop WM1" for the front and "Dunlop WM2" for the rear. If stamped Borrani, they aren't original. Head lamp brackets are not original, they are an after market item. Original brackets were black stove enamelled tubular steel with the "U" shaped lower backet having two brazed on wrap around brackets and held on with the lower fork tube yoke clamp bolts. Concertina rubber fork gaiters are an aftermarket item. OEM were steel tubes with brazed on end plates and stove enamelled black. Gearbox should be stamped RRT2 on the top. That stands for "Road Racing Torrington 2" where USA Torrington needle roller bearings were fitted each end of the layshaft and also at the inner end of the input sleeve gear. The RRT2 gearbox had a different kick starter quadrant gear and was angled forward so it didn't stick into your shin when riding the bike. First gear will be good for 65 - 70 mph but it is a REALLY bad idea to exceed 7,000 rpm on the 500cc Gold Star. Rear number plate bracket is from a later bike. The original part had closed in sides sitting on the rear mudguard with a rubber strip seal. Carb. should be a 1 1/2" bore GP carb. and probably a "matchbox" style float chamber hung off "isolastic" rubber mounts off the frame top tube. No idle facility on Amal GP carburettors, just gently blip the throttle at the traffic lights. I see the engine head steady is missing which was a triangular 1/8" thick cadium plated steel piece between the single bolt head attachment point and the two bolt frame attachment point. Original mudguards were chrome plated steel, not aluminium and those on your bike have been shortened. The centre stand was for 20 year olds not old blokes like us. You should be able to find a exact replica side stand which clamped to the left hand lower frame tube. If fitted with the correct 65-2442 and 65- 2446 inlet and exhaust cams and the correct silencer (muffler) then on the over run there will be an audible "twittering" sound. Should be good for 115 mph plus in top gear though my Brother In Law saw 125mph on his going down a long hill two up on the way to the UK's Isle of Man TT races. Hope this helps! Regards - Jon

Hi Jon, Thank you very much for all that great info, Sorry it took a while to get back to you......... I did take a look at the rims, and could find no markings at all. I do want to change the headlight mounts back to standard.. I already have the rubber fork booties I ordered, so I will use them. Yes, the gearbox is stamped RR T2. I will look for a side stand and an engine head steady... I did get a call this morning from a local owner of a Gold Star. He says there are a lot of Goldie parts locally, (Lower Mainland, BC) so that sounds good for me. He has owned them for 50 years...

As I keep digging into the left side rider peg and brake lever and switch issue, I found a 1959 for sale in the UK on eBay that shows a very good close-up picture of the assemblies. What we're seeing in this video's bike may be the passenger peg on the original brake lever's mount but the rider's peg may be missing. The UK bike shows quite a difference.

Hmm vapor blast where they foolishly bead blasted the engine cases because vapor blasting will leave a sheen type finish more akin to original castings and not corrode, But many british bikes of that era annealed their castings which is why generally they do not shown white corrosion like Japanese engines do on the alloy components. Looking forward to the workshop time on this one and hopefully some anecdotes and short stories along the way allowing us a glimpse into your dear departed friend Andy so the bike has more meaning to us all and Andy lives on through all of us and the stories of friendship and great rides you both shared. I think the estate executor was not just a fair and just man but also wise and compassionate man who knew Andy and what he would want as shown by this memorable gift for Andy's memories will live on with you through this Gold Star every time you look at it and improve it Andy will be watching and nodding his head in approval from above

Do some research stainless spokes are not a good idea they are lacking in tensile strength which is why no factory ever used them, Might be fine for a garage or trailer queen but not for a riders bike
@davidpalk5010

@@stephencox4224 That was then... With modern metallurgy and drawing processes, stainless spokes have high tensile strength and a good fatigue life.

Hi Paul, that tank sure made me take notice. I had 62 DB32 in 65 / 66. It came with that exact tank on. Re-built the whole bike, could write you a book about it. Might be the correct centre stand the back wheel should sit way off the ground. You have to learn to balance the bike holding on to the seat,work your way to stand by the rear mudguard stay with left foot holding the stand on the ground,this will hold the bike upright while you grab the mudguard stay with both hands to lift the bike and pull backwards onto the stand. I’ll let you figure how to get it off. Good luck from England.

Hello Paul, Good to see you back in the shop.That's a nice honest Goldie and should be a joy to ride when sorted. Nothing like a big bore thumper on a country road to soothe the soul. It's nice that it has "stayed in the family", so to speak, rather than sold off to the highest bidder. I think that your intended approach to returning it to service is the right one, and it should not take a prince's ransom to get it back on the road. I'll have a look through my parts bin to see if I have a spare magneto points cover clip and pillar. I am not a big fan of dispensing or receiving advice, but I feel compelled to encourage you to take the fibreglass fuel tank onto the driveway and run over it with your truck. In addition to the fact that a fifty year old fibreglass has about the same structural integrity as an egg shell, it will leak about ten minutes after it is filled with modern fuel. There is a range of reproduction Goldie fuel tanks from which to choose. Looking forward to watching the progress on this one and be sure to bring it to the 4th Annual Moto Giro D'Costa Del Sole on September 7. Ciao, Alan in Roberts Creek
@paulbrodie
@paulbrodie 6 күн бұрын
Hi Alan.. The oil tank and the fibreglass gas tank have never been used, so they are really brand new. But yes, our new fuels can ruin some fiberglas gas tanks. So I will think about which direction to proceed. Our MTB race in the 90's was in Roberts Creek, so I do know the area a little bit...

Paul, you have a great memento of your pal Andy! The front brake cable when it exits the stop on the backplate should lie parallel with the fork leg and the brake arm should be at between 7 and 8 o'clock on its spindle. The position of the rear brake arm on its backplate looks wrong too IMHO, possibly because the pull rod has not been shortened after the pedal pivot was moved. Keep up the good work!

Lots of parallels here; I lived on a rough gravel road & had a Ducati 900SS complete with aftermarket carbon/Ti exhaust. Not only did I have to traverse my road on that recalcitrant thing but also try & be neighbourly when I left early in the mornings! I rode a late model DBD34D, no cafe racer at all, it was a fully capable clubman racer. Very difficult to ride in an urban setting as you rarely needed second gear without exceeding the 30mph speed limit. The one I rode had twin leading shoe brakes and a touring 2-up seat. I loved it.

I have an option for you concerning the engine. When you get it apart, check around for someone that performs vapor blasting. The process is bead blasting wtih water pressure. When done, the aluminum shines wih a smooth finish unlike regular bead blasting does. Because the equipment needs a recovery system, the cost is higher and that means you have to possibly shop for a good price to do the work. A KZbinr, Arnolds Design,. does motorcycle carburetors and engine cases, heads, rocker boxes, etc.recording the process to show how it is done and what the parts loooked like before and after. I would not doubt that there are guys set up to do vapor blasting in your area. Just a suggestion.

Hi About 35 years ago I lived near a pub that was used by the bsa owners club and also the goldstar owners club, and it was amusing to hear the comments between owners stuff like yours can't be that particular modle because they only used that widget on the Wednesday afternoon red model, when after all bsa would use whatever they had at the time to put bikes together. Yes you are right the fuel tank oil tank and seat are definitely aftermarket items I'm also not shure that the wheel rims were stock or the mud guards . The position of the footrest seems wrong but a modification that would have been popular. All in all a nice bike to put back on the road. I have ridden a couple of goldies in the past and enjoyed them but had to give them back to there owners great fun but would be hard work in today's traffic. Keep up the good work

Neat story. I recall riding a Gold Star Clubman ONCE. A friend in High school bought one. After a week or two trying to use it in Traffic in Richmond B.C. where we lived, he sold it as he was NOT a mechanical type and changing the gearbox or gearing was beyond him. If I recall correctly he bought a beat up Springer Velocette 350 and rode that to school for a time.

Twenty years ago I went to an auction to buy a similar BSA Gold star 500 but in scrambler form, and when the hammer fell I was the very happy "winning" bidder, but when I'd paid for the bike we couldn't find the bike anywhere and a huge search began to find out where it had gone. What came to pass was the seller wasn't happy with the winning price and had loaded the bike back into his van and was in the process of leaving when we found him. Anyway he was an absolutely horrible man and simply refused to hand over the bike, and in the end the auction company were forced to repay the money I'd given them. I was truly gutted!!

The oil tank is original for the Catalina scrambler, or scrambler outside of the US. It is the off road version. I have a 1959 that I have been restoring. Looking forward to seeing how I can improve mine.

@@paulbrodie Probably true. The correct oil tank is easier to find than that one, along with the correct seat. If you have not seen "The Classic Motorcycle Channel 2" he does a lot with restoring Gold Stars. Lots of good information for getting it back on the road.

Condolences to your friend, and how nice was he to leave the bike to you. I've been known to have a bike or two on display in my living room as well. 🙂 Edited to add: could you swap out the gearset or even the entire box from another BSA (keeping the original, of course) to make it more steetable?
@paulbrodie
@paulbrodie 15 күн бұрын
Thanks Stuart. Yes, there is probably a way to swap gearboxes.. But it's good to have it close to standard, so I think not. Just happy to have it in my shop right now...
@VinShadow998
@VinShadow998 15 күн бұрын
@@paulbrodie Short of swapping the gearbox, you can easily lower the overall ratios by replacing either the engine or gearbox sprockets. This makes it easier to take off from a stop without burning up the clutch. High gear is very steep on these anyway, so this change is good across the board.

Hi from the UK ! Great bike Paul,Congrats !!.My guess is the tank is fibreglass,so a good excuse to replace with one of the aluminium Lyta type that you sometimes see fitted to these.Ethanol fuel will attack a fibreglass tank to destruction,will not be ideal for the bare interior of aluminium type either but you can line with an ethanol resistant coating..

I had a 1981 Honda Silver Wing in the 1980s. A bit of a turd of a bike but... I bought my first house in 1986 and that winter put the bike in my living room. It was amazing how big it seemed indoors. Now I have an all Nuovo Record Ciocc hanging on my wall so I totally get the bike in the house thing.

That is a nice example of a Goldie with what seems to be the RRT2 gearbox. Is it a DBD 34 model? I'm not sure about the valanced alloy rims being standard,I thought they were supplied with chromed steel rims as standard.
@aeroearth

Dunlop alloy wheel rims were an option. Dunlop WM1 for the front and WM2 for the rear. The earlier Touring DB34 Gold Star came as standard with chrome plated steel rims.

Brake switch is mounted backwards maybe even completely wrong bracket? Brake pedal/footrest just isn't right. Magneto should have a flat spring to hold cap on, haven't messed with one for at least 40 years. There is an extended special shaped bolt so you can pivot spring out the way to check points (probablyneed some BA spanners to adjust them) I may have some information, mostly have A10 stuff though. I'll take a look and see about getting things scanned GP carb is 'interesting' Apart from some drillings in back of brake drum, it looks like standard BSA 'heavyweight' brake, more common in 1950's (it is 7"?)
@VinShadow998
@VinShadow998 15 күн бұрын
The brake pedal pivot has been moved back to the pillion footrest, should be forward near the swing arm pivot. The front brake looks like the standard 8" unit, which works well; there was an optional 190mm version as well.

Do you think the fibre glass tank will be ok in the oven that's if you can get the powder to adhere to the tank without an electrical charge ?

@@MegaCoots two very valid points, I know that they use negative charges to attach short hairs to fiberglass not too sure it would work with paint ~???? maybe. I have seen powder coating used on plastics but not sure how they got it to stick or the type of plastic. Probably best to talk to various experts to see if it is at all possible. But thinking on would that Norton style tank look ok chromed ??? probably best kept in grey.
