Introducing the new addition to the ‪@david_austin_roses‬ collections for 2024 launched today at the Chelsea Flower Show this is the “ Emma Bridgewater” rose
With dark Matt Olive green foliage and huge deep coral pink blooms that are deeply cupped and heavily ruffled
Encased by a outer edge of large petals each run upon run of petals gets smaller and smaller towards the centre of the flower eventually forming a cabbage chrysanthemum like eye which is an enchanting light yellow,lime green tinged with streaks of apricot
Each Flower measuring around 3.5 to 4 inches in diameter, they are produced both individually and in large sprays
If you asked me to compare the colour, it is very similar to that of “boscobel, or jubilee celebration” but it’s the fragrance which is absolutely astonishing
Clean on the palate it’s fresh, fruity and intense with upper notes of citrus and sherbet lemons there are also back tinges of tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple
There appears to be a high thorn count, which often goes hand-in-hand with fragrance of this intensity
I’m going to go ahead and already offer this astonishing new variety. It’s fragrance rating and award it a
9⭐️ fragrance rating placing this new variety into the same category as, Munstead wood, the poets wife, Harlow Carr, the country parson and surpassing the fragrance rating of Gertrude Jekyll !!
I can’t wait to offer you my first impressions of this new variety during national rose month in June, before offering my full personal review in June 2025,

I’m not sure if you’re aware but dark roses are incredibly difficult to breed taking over 40,000 crosses to sustain one that is stable strong and possibly disease resistant personally I’m not a fan of the strong colours although I must admit to that Munstead wood is absolutely sped. My garden pallets tends to be much more pale pink light blue soft yellow, and apricots mixed with creams.

I have Munstead Wood and it's beautiful. More of a maroon-purple than red, and like most DAs the color changes with the weather, but quite dark.

@@libbysingscontrezzo8419 My first DA was the Munstead Wood and it was my absolute favourite. Sadly I left it within a garden at a previous house when moving, thinking I could just buy another in future and of course it's been now retired. The shade and the fragrance were phenomenal and I can't say mine had many issues.

I am rather disappointed, my first thoughts were: looks like jubilee celebration or Eustacia Vye. I was really hoping for a deep red rose to replace Darcy Bustle, which I dug out several months ago due to poor performance. 😢

I’m sorry that you are disappointed. It takes nearly 40,000 crosses to get a reliable stable and decent red. They’re not as easy to breed as any other colour and take much longer to develop

Thanks Ben, I live in hope that David Austin will introduce a wonderful deep red rose with the perfume of Gertrude Jekyll. William Shakespeare, Darcy Bussell, heathcliff and fulstaff have all promised much but never delivered.😢

i'm slightly disappointed it does look similar to recent introductions with a button eye. We really need a replacement for emma hamilton and munstead wood and not another Jubilee celebration:) I'm gonna go to the DA gardens next week and see it live to decide if I want it. Really surprised you picked a good fragrance as DA says it's only a light fragrance, but we know they gave Penelopy medium which is an understatement 100%.

Checking the DA website reveals that Jubilee Celebration has now been 'retired' after a short garden life of just 22 years. That means that you won't be able to find JC anywhere in the UK for purchase, unless you are lucky to grow it already, or can lean on a friend to give you a cutting. Ditto Lady Emma Hamilton, Munstead Wood, Jude The Obscure, and so many other English roses now considered by the DA Company as not garden worthy anymore. What we need surely is stability, pride, and jubilation in the gardening world above everything else in our lives, rather than a lack of usefulness to dampen the spirits. Otherwise respect & admiration diminishes with the frustration. This can happen.

Love David Austin roses and have recently bought many especially the pinks but am struggling to see the need for another pink in the already crowded collection so can't get too excited with this one. So far I have Princess Anne, Gloriana, New Dawn and Olivia rose austin all in flower. Gabriel oak, James Austin and Eustacie Vye are all in bud so shouldn't be too long now. James galway, Strawberry Hill, Jubilee celebration. Penelope Lively and boscobel are all a bit behind due to where they are planted in a dry less sunny part of the garden.

How many more pink DA roses can there possibly be? I can't get excited at all about this new introduction. In my opinion, there are a lot of people that seem to be drawn to the David Austin name - regardless of what the rose is actually like. Don't get me wrong - I have 5 DA's myself, but have many other roses from other breeders, which are incredibly beautiful, don't quickly shatter and a lot of them, are very unusual looking.

You are right. So many wonderfully fragrant roses from other rose breeders who are often sidelined in favour of DA's Roses - Peter Beales, Harkness, Kordes, Delbard, Meilland, Carruth (USA), and there are many more. But it looks like the David Austin company has overpriced their latest offering significantly, and may fall foul in the current high cost-of-living issues for many rose lovers. Where's the company's generosity of spirit?

No blooms so I have to be a bit more patient to experience this beauty. Ben, I remember last year you kept Penelope Lively in the received pot for a bit, is that something you advise to do around about this time of year as we have just recently passed bare root. Take good care of your Jubilee Celebrations (as I'm sure you will) so that the 'Royal' rose will give you many more years of admiration and joy. I'm saying this because the DA Company have recently 'retired' JC, along with so many others, and that means that neither the DA Company, nor other rose outlets worldwide, will have a licence to propagate and sell Jubilee Celebration to the gardening public who are devoted followers of David Austin Roses.

This is just an assumption but I believe this rose is heavily related to the species roses which is where it’s exceptional fragrance and slightly thorny nature will be coming from these roses hold their canes bolt upright they’re strong but the blooms do tend to. I don’t really want to make any assumptions at this point as it’s fresh out the box. I’ll bring you my first impressions during the month of June when it produces its next flush of flowers and my full personal review in June 2025.

Hi Ben. Just one question. What wheather you would describe as very hot? At what temperature you would recommend watering twice per week 20 liters each time? I have 5 english roses and it looks like i am missing the time to change. And when the heat hits roses, roses dont recover for long time. I want to react a bit quicker this year. I am asking because hot for Azerbaijan might be different from hot for England. Thank you.
@the_gardenerben

Hi good question a warm summer time temperature for us is anything over 24 degrees but it will also depend on how often you get rain fall, if your temperatures are in excess of 24 daily with no rain you should be watering at least twice a week

Well I'm sure you realise that the boxed plant that Gardener Ben so enthuses over is one which, from a fragrance standpoint, emerges in its own 'head space' (being confined over several days from packing, transit, and opening for the Chelsea Reveal.) The DA website will certainly be a more accurate pointer - the Company having assessed the rose in the Albrighton test fields over a decade, maybe more since the first cross. They give the Emma Bridgewater rose as a 'light' to 'medium' tea fragrance, which is probably a better reflection of the aroma in the average garden. So the new rose is not noted for a truly gorgeous scent by the 'expert noses' employed by the DA Company who assess the scent profile surrendered by the flower. I've never known DA's 'Noses' (Le Nez in the French Perfume Industry based in Grasse, Provence) to play down the scent profiles of their English Roses. With rose fragrance such an important character for many rose buyers, often number one in importance, then the Company is never going to undersell this essential attribute of their English Roses. Well why should they? In other words, only time will tell if the scent offered by this feminine rose is as affecting and endearing as it looks.

For the David Austin roses that have large blooms - is there a way to prune them to stop them flopping over? Or must I stake every bloom pointing upwards? My poets wife is drooping all over the place.
@the_gardenerben
@the_gardenerben 26 күн бұрын
Hi and thank you for your question. Some varieties never grow out of this trait others however do if you take a watch of my personal review for the poets wife but describe it as being an informal sprawling shrub with arching and floppy stems a peony cage for this particular variety or should you wish like I do I surround mine. With three or four metal side pins and tie the canes to these at the height of around 3 feet it’s just gives it a little natural support to be able to be those enormous shall we yellow flowers?

@@the_gardenerben Spot on Gardener Ben. Of course we know that gardeners in general will spend their last cents on plants, and I know of a few that go without any materialistic luxuries in order to furnish their rose gardens with mulches, organic fertilisers, with the mindset of "if my plants are happy, then I am happy too." We are now a country of "Haves" vs "Have Nots". The divide gets wider day by day. What we don't want to see is a world famous rose company of which you champion and of which the UK should be immensely proud of, charge such a high fee for a 'gift' to the rose world, which then becomes biased in favour of those with a higher status than us lesser mortals. I have spent my well-earned cash on nearly 100 roses over the last 40 years, about a third from the David Austin fields, ... for myself I will only entertain a new rose if it scores highly on flowering, disease resistance, AND crucially scent, for that amount of investment. Maybe they should think about including one of Emma's lovely mugs with the Chelsea price, a generous opportunity missed, I would venture.

Saw it at chelsea did not like it. Your flower size is much better than chelsea. But I disliked the colour. The older blooms look a dirty mauve. And does the world need another pink rose. Aa you represent David Austin I think you got a better specimen. As your blooms were much larger than the ones at chelsea. Which were .ore pompom . I say bring back Lady Emma. I live in the Netherlands. I got the last two I found in a small nusret last October. They have co.e on a treat healthy and blooming extremely well for the first year.. . And a rise like Minstead Wood would be great, another strange withdrawal from sale. As everyone I know, who has it says its healthy and blooms well Ms Bridgewater is nit for me

What you have alluded to is that - over and above the obvious excitement of a 'Chelsea Reveal' - most rose lovers will be guarded about the latest David Austin English Rose to enter commerce, particularly when the company under the spotlight takes the liberty of dumping some if its most beautiful creations on the compost heap after a decade of trials followed by only two decades (maybe 3 if we are lucky) in circulation. If they cull some of our favourite gems for whatever purpose, then the question becomes: "Why should we bother?" You will also be aware that Ben's generous rose, boxed by the company for several days from packing, through transit, to the final reveal, will arrive for its review and promotion in its own fragrant 'head space', windless, humid, the buds ready to pop; and frankly the review would have made more sense a day after unboxing. We also hope, as the rose season progresses, that KZbin rose experts who give us endless lists of their 'most fragrant' David Austin Roses, completely omit those which are NOT available in commerce, the ones which the company have 'retired' as not garden worthy anymore. There's no point extolling the virtues of Lady Emma and Munstead Wood, say, if new rose growers in the general public have no access to these garden gems of yesteryear. I rest my case.

@@gardenparty1000 much is your fully entitled to your opinion and I understand the points that you make these roses don’t belong to us. They were created by the david Austin Brand and once they deem them to be no longer financially viable to grow under Licence or that they no longer meet the growing conditions we’re now experiencing it is completely up to the brand as and when they retire them I think counting back this is about your third or fourth comment on this subject. I’m much as I appreciate that some people were very much long for and miss the roses of the past. I’m here to bring you my personal growing experiences observations and thoughts of not only the new varieties. But also those remaining within the david Austin collections. This year I will be focusing on 21 different varieties some of which are almost 15 years in commercial production and as my subscriber base especially here on KZbin if so international taking in large pockets of population from America Canada all parts of Europe China and Japan I feel it very important that I continue to share the right is that may be retired here in the UK, but I still widely available in other parts of the world If there is a variety that you are particularly looking out for that is no longer in UK production please do keep a look out for it under its Latin name not under its written name that david Austin also award these plants you were quite often find retired varieties two or three years after official retirement being grown by other supplies and placed into retail sales

@@the_gardenerben Thank you very much Ben for taking the trouble to reply to my musings and thoughts on your latest Chelsea Reveal. Actually, re-reading the list of combined comments - a very balanced overview of the DA Company and the EB Rose emerge, which I would argue is what you need in our current climate, and with so many roses to choose from. There are favourable positive points, and some not-so-good ones ... and at the end of the day, honesty, yes honesty, shines through the thread. But no, I won't be chasing Latin names of roses I desire. And no, there is no need to look towards Japan or across the Pond for a rose I am desperate for. There are many (hundreds) of roses created and nurtured by other breeders, with stunning form, rudely healthy at every stage, and crucially (for me) a knock-out fragrance which can challenge any of the English Roses on the market today. I grow many of these already, alongside my modest David Austin collection. Amen.
