Today, I'd like to introduce a completely free and open project I've created, which allows you to create a modular stand for knives, pens, and swords, for arbitrary sizes and numbers, which you can print or fabricate yourself. Code is at github.com/nic...

Thank you Nick. I've been trying different knife holder designs posted online and this looks pretty nice. I have a 5x holder going on a 3d printer right now!

Ok I've printed several variations to this design. I've working on a number of tweaks to your scad file. The geometries get rather weird for stands >3 knives on the handle side, you have all these intersecting pillars. I would recommend putting on rubber feet on the bottom, depending on printing medium a perfectly flat base isn't guaranteed, and even if it is flat a plastic stand on a glass or slick surface with sharp knives on them seems rather unsafe.

My first reaction was “you lost me at code”, but as I kept watching, it became easy to understand and not intimidating at all. This plan can work for so many different applications outside of its intended use. Nick, you’re very good at turning people on… to new and interesting things. You were the first to get me back into knives in 2016. Thank you.

That was my goal, to make this something usable for people who don't generally write code :)

Very crafty idea! Admittedly, when I saw 'modular', visions of patch cords danced in my head. I envy the folk with access to 3D printing for doodads like this. I'd probably have an easier time making something similar out of wood (albeit crude!), but conversely, not everyone will have access to the necessary tools for that. "Do NOT get into woodworking!"

My printer took 31 hours to print an 11 knife stand. I could not fit more slots in without making the slots too small to hold knives with pocket clips, or too tall for my print bed. I recommend not doing that. Four is good. Four is reasonable.

You can absolutely do that using the file and the functions provided, but you'll need to manually add the positions and locations of the knife, pen, and light. But it's not hard at all to do.
