The background music is distracting and makes it quite challenging to understand anything. Videos like this work best without music.

This method was something I always thought of so when I saw your video explaining acquired language I was YES!! Also, I’ve always been told you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, you’ve blown that saying out of the water ! Cheers 👏

Hi Professor Brown. Your TPRS really changed my view on learning language. I am still confused with this class method however and I was wondering if you can explain what you are doing in writing? Plus, sentences you wrote on the board, what are they? Is that what you were asking the class? Little more explanation would clarify my problem. Thanks in advance.

Great. What is written on the Ss' papers? When and why do they show it to you... Meaning what? I'd love to get some TPRS workshops. Are there online? And BTW... Why are you not providing some, professor Brown? You have a talent! :)

Why can't schools teach this way? I spent 5 years in school learning French, and my daughter has spent 3 years, also learning French. Neither of us can speak French, nor can anyone else I've met who learned a foreign language in school. Apparently, schools have learned nothing about teaching languages in 40 years. I learned more German in 3 months traveling in Germany than I'd learned after 5 years of French.

Traditional schooling favors a farther, faster, stronger approach. "1000 words taught a semester" sells a lot better than "100 words learned".

I liked how TPRS fits well with immersion (as you didn't speak any English). Also, having the chart of words on the board is great to refer to. Also I liked how you gave students question words to hold up and 'interact' with you.... And how you asked for responses to easy questions like numbers. I wonder how you keep the story going or do you already have an idea of how the study is going to turn out?

When I was "new" I kept a story in my pocket. Sometimes I did scripted stories that I "wrote out" ahead of time. Now, I do 100% "ask" stories and let the students "lead" the stories. But a lot of times students don't lead well so I always have to be ready.

Thanks for this demonstration. I am trying to develop a class where my Japanese students can actually learn English skill as opposed to 15 tons of grammar. I can’t use this as-is, since the students are to shy to stand in the front of the class and be Justin Bieber, but I will have to find a way to adjust it. Maybe with PowerPoint.

I am trying to start implementing TPRS in a beginner class. My problem is, in all the instruction on how to use TPRS that I have found online, you always start by introducing a few new words or phrases in the target language and a translation in the students' first language. My problem is, my students are not a homogenous group. They don't all share the same first language and I don't speak any of their first languages. Are there any instructional ressources on how to use TPRS without the use of any first language?

This is a great example of TPRS. Thank you. Could you write a step by step in addition? How many commands, how many words from a magazine and how many words from a storybooks and at what stage do you introduce I+1 method but how. After the session, how should I revise and review ? How often should I review ? Do I recite them? Try to memorize them out loud? By the way, do you have an video TPRS on Mandarin?

I'm looking for instructions, in spanish, that describe the TPRS methodology and fundamentals that I can give to a prospective spanish teacher in a language trade. Something that says here's how you can help me and how I'll help you. I know a few spanish speakers in an ESL class, for example who might be up for this exchange. Does anyone know if such a guide exists?

Hi it's funny that how languages are taught here is exactly this way. I've always loved our English, Chinese, and Filipino classes because of the stories we read and each class is entirely in the target language from Elementary to High-school, this was the case. I thought that this is how languages are taught all over the world. Now this class was super comprehensible to me since I started acquiring Portuguese 6 months ago and am conversational at a really basic level, introducing myself and talking about daily routines.

I see the teacher giving a show in Spanish, but I would like to see the point where the students speak Spanish. Obviously, they can understand these sentences, but if you ask them to speak them it will be more difficult. Like I studied Italian but I ended up understanding Italian and not being able to speak it or write it. I see in this video a lot of English on the board. Maybe a more advanced level of this method on a video would also help. This is a very basic level.

You don't understand the point of the video. These are basic basic students they are babies in Spanish learning. They don't need to speak right now like babies don't born speaking. Your Italian problem is up to you, I learnt English speaking with family and friends, no grammar, only repeating sentences. You learned Italian with grammar?🤔
