Alex Morgan (She will be 35 years-old on Tuesday July 2nd, 2024), one of the most decorated players in U.S. women's soccer history, was left off the American roster headed to the Olympics in France, the team announced Wednesday. Morgan was the most notable absence of the 18 players named to the squad of first-year coach Emma Hayes, who is seeking to return the Americans to their long-accustomed elite levels. The USWNT crashed out of last year's World Cup in the round of 16 and managed only a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.

I would like to ask something to the USWNT fans (I am genuinely curious)... Considering Emma Hayes have only been a few months in the job and is only going to have a few weeks with the players, I think it is not an unlikely scenario to see the USWNT not get to the medals. Would you consider that a failure and Emma Hayes a bust? or will you assume it is growing pains and be patient until the real (fair) test for Emma comes in 2027?

The Olympics is too soon to be a valid test of Emma Hayes's leadership. She started with the USWNT just a month ago and will have had just 2 months and 4 friendly games to train the team before the Olympics. I hope the USWNT gets the gold but I won't see a failure to medal as a reflection of Emma's leadership.

Hayes is in it for the long haul - doesn't matter what happens in the Olympics. The Federation made that clear by allowing her to stay with Chelsea.

The goal is 2027. Olympic gold is nice, but everything from now until then is preparation for the World Cup.

@@Klako-ls6yt Agreed. The olympics ( whatever Americans think about it ) is a mini tournament of 12 teams that ranks a poor third after the WWC and Euros. I can see Emma bringing the Usa over to Europe for a tour . Tough to fit the tour in due to WSL season and Euros next July. So maybe May / June next year?

I still don't see the fuss over Sophia Smith. Yes, she's good in club but not great on an International level .. especially with her diva, arrogant, and cocky attitude it doesn't make any better. Great roster with the exception of Dunn. She's a fantastic player but I think that there are younger options that would be better.

She's a great utility player. For such a small roster, and subbing rules it's really smart to bring in a player like Dunn who can slide into any line and any formation.

I just would have preferred to see Alex for the experience, or a Croix Bethune if they were going for a young player. I also think a mid-field without Ashley Sanchez is sad face. Too much available talent, and not enough spots is a good problem to have I guess.

Korbin Albert??? It's Emma Hayes's first missed opportunity to add more creative midfielders to the squad. Rose Lavelle is injury prone and Catarina Macario is not 100% fit yet. I don't know what Korbin Albert brings to the table, but I'll take Lily Yohannes or Croix Bethune over Albert.

You won't see it cause she is more of a defensive midfielder. She is there for the tackles, the head battles and to give the ball to the playmakers (Horan,Lavelle, Rodman etc). That's why you have the impression they don't bring much

Lavelle’s too important as a playmaker to leave out. If Macario’s not quite 100% now, she certainly will be by the Olympics. But I agree; I’d definitely take Bethune & Yohannes over Albert.

She’s a natural scorer. She won the golden boot in her first season in the NWSL she was just moved to a back during the Jill Ellis era. But it’s good she can play anywhere on the field.
