@@Bane_questionmark Its real popular now to doubt the existence of Jesus. But no one seems to doubt the historical existence of James,the "Lord's brother". No one is arguing Paul didn't exist. Obviously Paul met the other apostles who were eye witnesses to the resurrection of Christ. I'm not going to mention the martyrdom of some of them but really what was to be gained by a conspiracy? Time in jail? Beatings? Being on the run? Stoning? There must be better pursuits to follow for 12 alleged "con-artists".

To understand the Bible you have to understand it in context. Every book has a specific purpose as does the two Testaments. The old and the new.

Jermain Marcet well 'testament' means 'covenant.' So the idea of a New Covenant comes from Luke 22:20 and a few other places. Jesus Christ came to bring a new covenant that was greater than the old.
@christtheonlyhope4578
@christtheonlyhope4578 5 жыл бұрын
Jermain Marcet the old Covenant is referring to the Covenant that God made with Moses on Mount Sinai, even though there are several covenants mentioned in the Old Testament. The old Covenant was made with Israel and the New Covenant is made for believers in Christ. Hope that helps.

Jermain Marcet The Mosaic Covenant was centered around God's giving His divine law to Moses on Mount Sinai (see exodus 19-24). At the time of the Mosaic covenant, God reminded Israel of their obligation to be obedient to His law (Exodus 19:5), and the people agreed to the covenant when they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” (Exodus 19:8). This covenant would serve to set the nation of Israel apart from all other nations as God’s chosen people. The New Covenant (or New Testament) is the promise that God makes with humanity that He will forgive sin and restore fellowship with those whose hearts are turned toward Him. Jesus Christ is the mediator of the New Covenant, and His death on the cross is the basis of the promise (Luke 22:20).
@christtheonlyhope4578
@christtheonlyhope4578 5 жыл бұрын
Jermain Marcet as far as the new covenant being better than the old, Hebrews 8:6,7 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.

Don't dismiss the knowledge and curiosity of the ancients. Most people had a far broader knowledge than people of today. The average farmer could build a house, deliver a child, refine ores, tan leather, hunt, understand medicinal herbs and was more often than not a veteran of conflict. We like to think we are more intelligent now but I don't believe that for a second simply based on what the average modern person experiences and produces in a life time.

Translation can and will always leave things out. Just this past Sunday, at church we were doing readings for the third Sunday after Easter. In the reading The disciples were fishing after the crucifixion, and they see Jesus on the shore. So Peter dives into the water and swims 100 yards to go see Jesus. And Jesus asked Peter if he (Peter) loved him (Jesus) three times. Now in English, this reads very much as a parallel with the three times Peter denied Jesus. That Peter needed to say he loved Jesus three times for each time he denied him. But that is not the meaning at all! Or at least it isn’t the only meaning, as in the original Greek, Jesus and Peter are using different Greek words for love, where Jesus is asking if Peter feels “agape”, the kind of love one has for children or the non sexual love one has for their spouse. A deep and understanding and powerful love. The kind of love God can give. Peter can only honestly respond that he has phillia for Jesus, brotherly affection. And Jesus gives Peter three chances, but Peter can’t honestly meet Jesus at His level. Peter cannot give back what Jesus can give to Peter and the world. So Jesus relents and asks Peter if he truly does have phillia for him, and Peter confirms that he does. The lesson being that God and Jesus will always meet us where we are, if our hearts are in the right place. That is a meaning your lose entirely in the English translation.

2 Questions: 1. If mind is fundamental and matter is emergent, where did human minds come from? Have they existed forever? Is God simulating them? Did he create them once he assigned his image to humans? 2. How can a timeless God decide to create anything? Doesn't decision-making require time?
@TheBrunarr
@TheBrunarr 5 жыл бұрын
1. Imagine God is a stream of consciousness. Human minds are simply whirlpools in that stream. Whirlpools can begin and end as well. Hope that helps. 2. I think this assumes time is an objective feature of reality. I think the passing of time and the existence of space are illusions emergent from the quantum level, they are simply how we experience things as opposed to being objective features of reality. Good questions
@ChrisBandyJazz
@ChrisBandyJazz 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBrunarr Thanks for the reply, Bru. 1. I guess a better way to ask my question is this: when did human souls start going to Heaven or Hell after death? Did this start right after God assigned his image to humans? Does that mean all the humans before this point were just annihilated after death? 2. If there is no time, there is no change. A "stream" and "whirlpools" imply change. Could you address the contradiction you just made? 3. If there is no change, God could never have changed from "not deciding to create the universe" to "deciding to create the universe." Assuming God created the universe, it follows that the decision to create the universe existed timelessly with him before creating it...which means the decision to create the universe is part of nature. Right?
@TheBrunarr
@TheBrunarr 5 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisBandyJazz 1.when did humans start to go to heaven and hell? Most likely when they evolved enough to be morally accountable for their actions. When that was is difficult to say. 2. There is no contradiction, I'm simply using a stream and whirlpools as an analogy to show the metaphysics of contingent minds compared to Gods mind and how individual minds could exist when "all is mind." The metaphysics of time isnt relevant to this analogy. 3. Gods decision to create "existed" timelessly with Him in a sense, but this does not mean that God's hand was forced. He could have known from eternity-past that He would do what He has done, but it's entirely conceivable that in a different possible world God timelessly chose something different.

Yeah like some people would claim that Jesus in Mark’s gospel was adopted as God’s son after his baptism however mark contains a statement from Jesus in his trial narrative that indicates he is the son of man from Daniel 7 and that son of man has the same status as God because he is mentioned by riding on the clouds. Cloud riding motif can be found in Ugarit texts that describe Baal as rider of the clouds and that term is only attribute to him so putting that motif to Jesus, it’s basically him claiming he is equal to God

When we start to understand that humans freely wrote in the style of their contemporaries and in line with their prescientific worldviews we start to appreciate how marvelous God’s intent is by creating us in his image. Jesus transforms philosophy and offers us a world where we will rule and reign with him! Good intro to language differences.

It doesn't say "Bible", it says "γραφὴ" (grafe). It should be translated scriptures or writings. Scholars debate which writings is meant here, but it's fair to think that Paul meant at least the OT. How much of NT he had access to we don't really know. There are writings mentioned in the NT that are not included in our current Bibles. So yeah, you're not exactly wrong, but it's more complex. If you want to stick to your line though, I'll support it wholeheartedly. I'm a theology student and regret it sometimes.

Sometimes we must keep our faith out of the picture temporary and just learn what they teach . Think of it kind a like a medical doctor having to learn Darwin's Theory of evolution . He doesn't swallow the hook but you wouldn't like to have a doctor that if you asked him if he believes in Darwin's Theory of Evolution he answered who ? That may suggested that he never took biology in college. That is what i think of with minister's that are unschooled . I mean yes it is about the holy spirit but those who love God want to excel in knowledge of him but also learn teaching techniques management ETC. . The culture and secondary Near Eastern History as well as Church History are very important and bring the Stories to life. We have such a hard time convincing people of this . I get accused of being to inteletuial . And i am not even smart. Learning theology and secondary, sometimes secular biblical ideas, is a fantastic exercise for the brain . What a twist . Like a super gym for brain building . That comment above about Scripture ( god breathed writings) was well put. All god breathed writing are for equipping the saints in instruction and techniques. Knowledge wisdom and discernment. It is not even addressing the inerrancy of scripture. The way people translate it ,it would sound like this . All God breathed writings are God breathed writings. This because inspired means God breathed. No one would ever question that.

The peoples of the Ancient Near East are different to the Ancient Israelites who received revelations from God! What a tenuous argument to claim there’s a substantive correlation between the meaning of the biblical text and what pagan cultures believed or even what the Israelites believed before they received revelations! Let the Bible interpret itself, rather than favour pagan cultural practices & beliefs/minor linguistic differences as being the deciding factor. Additionally, we can, with research, understand what the Hebrew writers were saying. I don’t see how it follows from the linguistic nature of Hebrew to what the Bible really teaches. You are grasping at straws InspiringPhilosophy. Walton’s theories are not very good and they receive more attention than they deserve.

That doesn't mean God didn't give them revelation in cultural relative terms. God communicated in a way people would understand Him. So He would obviously have to use the culture of the day to do that.

@@InspiringPhilosophy I agree that God took account of the culture, to some degree, when communicating with the Israelites. But I don’t think that translates, for example, as something like Gen. 1:1 refers to function rather than creation ex nihilo. I think one needs to take into account how God shaped or wished to shape Israelite culture. Firstly, I think it is by no means certain that Israelites viewed things in a similar way to the nations surrounding them. But were I to entertain such a thesis, God may have wanted them to realise that He is greater than a being who merely assigns function - that he is the originator and creator of all - that nothing exists outside of him. I am also not convinced by Walton’s interpretation of Gen. 1:1 - ‘bara’ may be used in the sense of function, but scholars generally see the confluence of the words translated ‘created’ and ‘beginning’ as referring to creation ex nihilo. I don’t think Walton’s argument flies with the majority of scholars working in the relevant field. I think it’s easy to end up making overstated generalisations when one takes too far these theses espoused by people like Walton.

Cultural context doesn’t change the actual content of the Bible. It only serves as justification for that content, or it would if it justified anything at all. For example, God told the Israelites to stone a Sabbath-breaker in the Bible. I’m sure that was all well and good for the people of the time to think of themselves, and had a cultural purpose and all that, but there’s an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good, unchanging, personal deity involved in that. I’m pretty confident that, in the course of this new series, IP will deny the truth of the Old Testament, try to justify subjective morality, or advocate for various obvious immoralities, if he doesn’t fall back on the old “God is by definition good” canard. If he has anything else of use to say, I’ll be pleasantly surprised and open to conversion as a result.
@thescapegoatmechanism8704
@thescapegoatmechanism8704 5 жыл бұрын
Kevin Allen I don’t think IP is saying that the context necessarily changes the content itself, but it can change the way the reader looks at the content. For some people, just thinking about the scarcity of resources and the emphasis on practical living certainly helps put some violent things the Israelites did into perspective. Personally, I don’t imagine any of us would last very long in the wild the way the ancient people did without air conditioning and fast food, much less be “civilized” by our standards. Having said that, I don’t think the goal of the series is to really help people overcome their theological biases, per se. If the idea of infinite God not providing all the resources for people to flourish morally offends you, then, sure, no amount of historical context is going to move you on an emotional level. But, in that case, I don’t think the series would really be for someone like you.

:..I’ll be pleasantly surprised and open to conversion as a result." Sure ya will! No, the stoning of the Sabbath breaker is pretty clean cut and dried. The question is why would a guy break the Sabbath in clear view of others, as the law required at least two witnesses at trial for a conviction and the accusers were required, by Law, to "cast the first stone" so to speak, when the stick collector knew the penalty was death? That's like parking your car in a clearly marked no parking zone with the tow truck right behind you, and law enforcement in the front. You silly! Now, Jesus defended( like in legal) Mary, accused of adultery, by Pharisees, no less (Jesus had serious beef with Pharisees and threw shade at them whenever possible with good reasons). The Bible tells us that Jesus was writing in the dirt and many suggested that he was writing the individual sins committed by those in the over zealous crowd. Now here's the kicker. What if Jesus was writing the Law which required a trial, which would mean that those involved in the crime be presented for judgement including the person who was caught in the act with Mary, who was suspiciously absent from the attempted stone lynching? Either there was one, or there wasn't. In any case seems a bit suspicious to me. Which means that everyone involved was breaking the Law. One Law! Taking the two accounts into consideration we see the basis of ideas beginning to form. 1. Abuse of power. 2. The right to face one's accusers. 3. The right to a trail. (wonder where I've heard those before?) We also see the transference of the covenant. Wherein God's Judgement was swift, direct and personal in the OT. Like Ned Stark telling his sons, "the one who passes the sentence should swing the sword." (things seem to circle around a bit). The New Covenant, Judgement is reserved for the Day of Judgement when all come before the Lord. You mentioned "God is by definition good". What does that mean? By definition? Who's definition? Can God be "good" and not keep His Word or His own Law? Good thing IP is doing this. Lots of people need his help. I for one am looking forward to learning as much as possible. If you're sincere about "converting" I suggest you begin looking for a good place of worship and community. Peace.

@The Scapegoat Mechanism I understand that ancient people were more ignorant in basically every way than us. I don’t need context to get that from the Bible itself. It just also means that God was a totally abysmal teacher and parent if he existed. Not a good source of moral or empirical knowledge in the slightest. His strategy for resolving disagreements is to kill the party that disagrees with him, which unsurprisingly doesn’t work. Think about how we can bring children into this world and teach them why genocide is wrong without asking them to commit genocide in the process. Why couldn’t God do that, too? As for scarce resources, I can’t imagine why we couldn’t have enough scarcity to have hurdles to overcome without needing to commit genocide to get enough resources. It seems like that manna God used could have prevented a lot of genocide.

Kevin Allen right, so you’re basically saying what I’m saying; it doesn’t matter what the cultural context is or the practicality behind Israelite laws, you only care about theological speculation. That’s fine, but why attack the series if it’s scope is merely understanding history and not speculating theoretical possibilities?
@Kevorama0205
@Kevorama0205 5 жыл бұрын
@utopiabuster 2017 Yes, defying a dictator is often stupid. That isn’t a defense for the dictator in the slightest. The Sabbath-breaker more likely forgot about the law or didn’t know what day it was. Both of which God would have punished with stoning as well. More likely than that he knowingly asked for stoning with his actions. Places of worship are quite silly when you don’t believe. Why would you go to a mosque or synagogue for community? Moreover, Christians don’t like it when you criticize the Bible, so I suspect I wouldn’t be welcome unless I lied about my beliefs. Basically, it would be of no use to anyone for me to do so regularly.

So, could you tell me what this me why in Exodus it says you can beat your slaves with a rod, but make sure not to kill them. But if they get up after two or three days it's fine, since they're your property. Further, it states you can sell your daughter into sex slavery in the near beginning of Exodus. Additionally, a woman should be stoned to death if she is not a virgin on her wedding day according to scripture. I'm failing to understand how these abhorrent verses are merely "out of context," when they were supposedly authorized by a omniscient being. There are pages upon pages in scripture about who to kill, why to kill, nothing whatsoever about science, the principles of diseases, nothing.

Why should Scripture contain science and principles of diseases? Just so you will know, a man took 1 (one) verse from scripture and a new science was developed from his efforts. " I'm failing to understand ..." That is because you are brainwashed, closed-minded and deluded. That is why you do not understand. One atheist was directly responsible for the deaths of 70,000,000 children, women and men. In 1958, he bragged about burying alive 46,000 scholars. @Eric ee "could you tell me what this me why in Exodus it says you can beat your slaves with a rod, but make sure not to kill them" It doesn't say that. "Additionally, a woman should be stoned to death if she is not a virgin on her wedding day according to scripture." Yea? Exodus 22:16-17 clearly shows a woman who's not a virgin on her wedding day, but she isn't stoned to death, so you're clearly wrong. Obviously, what Deut. 22:13-21 is saying is that the Woman had sex with other people in secrecy, and tried to appear to be a virgin. So it's condemning her because she was being a prostitute and kept it in secret. I can by all means agree that the punishment is extremely extensive, but don't tell that the punishment was over her just not being a virgin on her wedding day.

If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." Further, whenever children get out of line, we should beat them with a rod(proverbs 13:24, 20:30, and 23:13) if they are shameless enough to talk back to us, we should kill them(Leviticus 20:9, Deuteronomy 21:18, Mark 7:9-13 and Matthew 15:4-7) we must also stone people to death for heresy, adultery homosexuality, working on the Sabbath, worshiping graven images, and more. Further, your claim that atheism is a religion is demonstrably false. Atheism literally just lacks a belief in Gods. There isn't sufficient evidence for one, so atheists dismiss it. We don't need divine morality in order not to commit crimes. We can have secular morality and live just fine? Also, people like Hitler are called atheists. Hitler didn't claim to be one. In fact, he called himself a devout Christian and mentioned Christ in MANY of he speeches. He talked about executing a divine plan. The church did nothing to stop him, and fascism happily coexisted with Catholicism in Spain, Croatia, Portugal, Italy. There is zero doubt that people who are filled with religiosity have a proclivity to be bigots, oppressive, judgmental, etc. A person who is secular is much less likely to display these features(just look at the Nordic countries) Also, anti-Semitism actually arose from Christianity. I'm far from brainwashed, and I'm simply looking at things in scripture that appear to be completely man made.

OK, but which is more likely: there are historical, linguistic and scientific inaccuracies in the Bible because it is the product of human culture and its limitations, or because the people who wrote it were inspired by a god who wasn’t very precise or didn’t quite understand the way the universe works. I suggest it's pretty clear how the Bible came to be what it is, and gods don't play any necessary part in the process.
