Response to Mason Brignac (below). Besides manufacturing fall protection systems, we also install Christmas lights. It's a perfect way to test equipment and methods. Since 2018, for Christmas lights installations, we require the Eveook system on all roofs that cannot be reached, for the entirety, with a 28 ft ladder. That includes most jobs. We have never damaged a soffit. Only one of our customers has stated they have damaged a vinyl soffit. They repaired it by heating it with a heat gun. The wheels of the Eveook are 22 in wide and made of polyethylene foam, They are not very hard. We routinely perform 6" drop tests of 310 lb test mass, on installed systems on my home, and these do no damage to the soffit. The polyethylene foam wheels leave no marks.

Thank you Frank. You can use pneumatic (air-powered) line throwers, if you want. They are more expensive and difficult to use, but in some places, they might be better.

I’m confused, what’s keeping from falling to the ground, a second on the opposing side, with the two connected with tension on the rope?

We are an engineering company and also do similar works by climbing up on roofs. We have more than 20 years experience. We use rope access methods and are equipped with professional harnesses and rope access devices. What we do is that instead of using a device like this eeveook, we tie off both ends of the rope to stationary structures such as trees, perimeter columns, even a vehicle strategically parked. This eveook is too big and impractical to carry in our vehicle.
@BallantyneGear
@BallantyneGear Жыл бұрын
If you can't carry it, then obviously you can't use it. They are 26" tall and 32" long, which is a pretty big, but they stack well. By the way, they only weigh 22 pounds. We have been working on roofs since 2001. I am SPRAT certified for rope access and I am a rock and tower climbing and rappelling instructor. We used to attach to trees, poles, and other anchors, but frequently it was difficult to find an anchor in the right spot. We did lots of other things too. The problem was the anchor line was never right where we wanted it and installation was awkward and took too much time. We are not engineers, we install Christmas lights on steep roofs (mostly 12:12 and 14:12, some 16:12), working on the edge. To create this system, we worked with and continue to work with some of the best engineers in the United States, Canada, and Italy. Our Christmas lights production is up because we finish jobs faster. With the Eveooks, we don't need to advertise for lights business any more, saving us $10,000 every November. Before the Eveooks, we would lose about 50% of our customers every year and had to replace them. With the Eveooks, we lose about 10% but we get more referrals than we can service. Our customers know that we are safe and they don't have to worry about getting sued because someone fell off a roof. If you can find a little space for the Eveooks, your lives would be much easier.

My question too... if a painted wood soffit will it leave permanent marks? If it's vinyl it'll likely dent or mar that too. What if the soffit doesn't return level and follows the pitch of the roof up instead? Will this thing still work?

We have never had a customer complain about any of the above concerns except a soffit that follows the pitch of the roof. Additionally, we install Christmas lights thru the month of November and the first week of December, in the Dallas, TX area. We install lights on 80 to 90 homes every year and we have never had any of the problems that you mentioned, but we don't have soffits that follow the slope of the roof in this area. All the soffits in our area are flat. The Eveooks will attach to many sloped soffits but not all. If you have a sloped soffit, on a 4:12 slope, the Eveooks will work on the soffit if it is not greater than 15", with the larger 12" wheels. As the slope increases, the greater the soffit can be and still work. In 2023, to allow the Eveooks to work on sloped soffits that are currently too large for our system, we will be introducing a new product that will be inexpensive, easy to use, and will allow you to attach to just about any sloped soffit. For example, in Colorado it is not unusual for a roof to have a 24" or greater sloped soffit. Currently, we cannot attach to these soffits; however, the new product will allow this. Send me a private message with your email and we will keep you updated on further advancements from Ballantyne Gear and also industry updates. Anyone is welcome to send their email to receive updates.

The weight of the system, lies on the peak of the roof. At the peak, we use a rope protector that protects the rope and the roof. We have never had a customer complain about damage to soffits, and some of our customers have customers with vinyl and aluminum soffits.

That’s the most effective (and fun 😎) way we have tested for our system; especially for monster houses we have here in Texas! There are other ways to get a line over a home / sloped structure that we have outlined in our technical manual.

Hate to break it to you, but your case study doesn’t make sense to me… you say in the 2nd year you were able to keep the same profitability after implementing the gear. However you didn’t account for having to buy 5-10k in gear…not to mention cost of training guys and they will take longer at a job… overall I would need to make like 30k more in that example for it to be worth it. With that said though, good luck, stay safe, and I hope you sell a ton so prices come way down cause not a bad idea!

Climbing the ladder and firing the line thrower, you don't have fall protection. The rest of the time you do. If you look, you will see that the second side installer has fall protection.

@BallantyneGear

We appreciate your comments. I have worked on residential sloped roofs for 22 years. As an instructor on how to work safely on roofs (for professional roof workers) and a rock climbing instructor (mostly for youth adventures), I can see why you would think these ropes are for rock climbers, not professional roof workers. One of the ropes that we use as the anchor line for crews of up to four users is a static kern mantle rope that is made for professionals but could easily be used for rock climbing. The anchor line that we use for up to eight people has a UHMWPE core and a polyester sheath and is three times stronger than any rock climbing rope that I know of and has an elongation of less than 1%. It is not usable for rock climbers. It is for professional use only. Regarding soffits, the wheels of the Eveooks are polyethylene foam and will give before the soffits will bend, except possiibly when arresting a hard fall. If it saves a life, I'm okay with a bent soffit. Additionally, the wheels have a width of 22" to ensure that there is support from at least one rafter that will be above the soffit. In over ten years, no one has ever damaged a soffit. Possibly a greater concern than soffits is making sure that you don't damage a rain gutter. If you go to page 9 in our technical manual (follow the link below) it will show you what roofs the Eveooks can attach to safely and without damaging a rain gutter or a roof edge. (You'll see from the manual that the Eveooks will attach to almost any residential sloped roof edge.) www.dropbox.com/s/qnrq42lchx0ub4x/2022%2011%2031%20Eveook%20Systems%20Technical%20Manual.pdf?dl=0

On sloped roofs, this is the only reasonable product we know, that meets OSHA requirements for roofers, solar installers, and more, on sloped roofs; to include protecting the installer of the fall protection and avoiding swing falls. However, because we have seen damage to soffits that do not have the support of rafters or rafter tails, we are making a new product that will be available by the end of the year that will solve this problem.

Considering the deaths and injuries from falls from sloped roofs that are increasing every year, and the inferior fall protection products that are being sold, I understand your pessimism. You can find our CSA Z259.16 certification for engineered fall protection system on our website www.ballantynegear.com. Click on Technical and then on CSA Z259.16. The certificate is signed by our Professional Engineer Greg Small P. Eng. PE M. Greg was the committee chairman of CSA Z259.16 when it was created. I would challenge anyone to show me a safer and more efficient fall protection system. You are welcome to call me at 1-888-996-3565, if this is important to you. Thank you.
