With Takaful, if you do not make the donation, you do not get the insurance protection. Therefore it is a contract just like conventional insurance. Every society has aspects of cooperation and mutual assistance. Conventional insurance is just a more scientific way of doing it, using modern risk management, actuarial science and risk pooling. You purchase protection from risk (gharar), and that is a good thing.
